Three Chicagoans face charges after a brazen home invasion in Homer Glen that left a 73-year-old woman shaken and robbed at gunpoint. The elderly victim was bound and gagged before her attackers made off with thousands of dollars.
The incident began when the woman, who is said to have been shopping earlier in the day, returned to her home on South Deer Path Wednesday afternoon. A gunman appeared out of nowhere, forcing her into the house where a second assailant emerged from a stolen dark-colored Acura. The vehicle was later confirmed to be taken from Chicago.
The attackers then proceeded to ransack the woman's home, removing her credit card and demanding the PIN code. They withdrew $2,000 from an ATM in Orland Park before finally leaving the victim's property 20 minutes later. It is believed that the attack may have been random but was also partially motivated by the victim's age.
Fortunately for the victim, a neighbor arrived just in time to help her escape. Police are still investigating the full extent of the incident, but they believe it may be linked to a recent armed robbery in Lemont.
A massive manhunt ensued when police issued an alert about a suspicious vehicle matching the description of the Acura used during the attack. The suspect vehicle was eventually spotted speeding away from officers, prompting a multi-agency pursuit that ended with the Acura crashing near U.S. 52 and Rowell Avenue in Will County.
Three suspects - one of whom is a juvenile - fled on foot but were quickly apprehended by authorities. Two of the suspects are currently being held at the Public Safety Complex for questioning, while the third was taken to hospital for evaluation. The suspects have extensive criminal histories, including prior convictions for weapons-related offenses.
