A horror fan’s guide to Halloween’s next cult classics - Detroit Metro Times

For those who, like me, are already primed for a good scare this Halloween season, but may be looking to branch out from the usual suspects, I've got you covered. From action-packed thrillers to folk horror masterpieces, here are some upcoming cult classics that will make your skin crawl.

First up is "The Guest," a 2025 release that seamlessly blends action and horror in a way that'll keep you on the edge of your seat. Dan Stevens stars as David Collins, a mysterious veteran who shows up at his deceased best friend's family home with sinister intentions. With echoes of "The Terminator" and "Halloween," this film is perfect for those who enjoy a good scare with their action flicks.

Another must-see is "The Descent 2," although not technically the sequel to the original, its intense sequences will leave you breathless - literally. A group of women on a spelunking adventure vacation find themselves trapped in a massive cave system filled with terrifying creatures. This one's a no-brainer for fans of claustrophobic horror.

If you're looking for something a bit more offbeat, consider "The Empty Man." Released during COVID and with the studio intervening with the director's vision, this film still manages to work as a modern horror classic despite its flaws. It's equal parts folk horror and detective thriller, keeping viewers hooked until the very end.

Lastly, there's "Train to Busan Presents: The Last Breathing," a Japanese nightmare maker that initially seems like a serial killer procedural but morphs into something much darker and more disturbing. With its slow-burning tension, this one will have you on edge from start to finish.

While it's impossible to narrow down the best horror movies for this Halloween season, these three films are sure to provide plenty of chills and thrills. Whether you're a fan of action-packed thrillers or folk horror masterpieces, there's something on this list for everyone.

omg I'm soooo not ready for halloween yet 😱💀 these movies sound super scary and intense 🤯 "The Guest" and "Train to Busan Presents: The Last Breathing" are giving me serious goosebumps 💃🏻😵 I've heard great things about "The Empty Man" but with the director's vision being altered it's hard for me to get hyped 😔 still, these recs are super helpful 🤗 thank you so much for sharing them 🎃

You know what really gets me thinking about "The Guest" is how it explores the idea of identity and how our past can come back to haunt us in the most terrifying ways. I mean, think about it - David Collins shows up out of nowhere with these...unsettling intentions, like he's been hiding in plain sight all along 🤔. It makes me wonder, what if we're not as aware of ourselves as we think we are? What if our own demons are the ones doing the haunting? The way Dan Stevens brings this character to life is so captivating, it's like you can't look away from your own dark side 😬. And that's what horror movies do best - they mirror us back at ourselves and make us confront the things we'd rather ignore 🎃.

OMG, I'm SO stoked for the new horror flicks dropping this Halloween 🎃👻! "The Guest" sounds like an intense thriller, love the combo of action and horror - can't wait to see Dan Stevens bring that mysterious vibe to life 😲. But, gotta say, I'm a bit skeptical about "The Empty Man" with those director's vision issues 🤔. Still, folk horror is my jam, so if it works out, I'll def be giving it a shot 🎥. And, Train to Busan Presents: The Last Breathing? Slow-burning tension is right up my alley 😳. Anyone else excited for these new scares?!

I'm not sold on the whole "Train to Busan Presents" franchise... it seems like they're just churning out random titles with similar plots 🙄. I mean, don't get me wrong, it sounds like "The Last Breathing" could be pretty intense, but is it really necessary to slap a name from another film into the mix? And what's up with the title changes... it's like they're trying to make each one sound more unique than they actually are 😒. Give me something that actually takes risks and tries to innovate, rather than just rehashing familiar horror tropes 🎃

omg u guys gotta check out train to busan presents the last breathing its soooo creepy 😱🎃 i was literally on edge the whole time no idea what was gonna happen next 🤯 and the ending man... cant give it away but trust me ur not ready for it 😂 these movies are def gonna make ur halloween season tho

🎃 I'm telling ya, have you noticed how all these movies are coming out around Halloween? It's like they're trying to brainwash us into thinking that's when horror season starts, but what if it's not? What if the real horror is something way more sinister than just a few jump scares on screen? Like, what if our government is secretly controlling our minds through these movies and we're all just mindless drones at this point 🤔. I'm not saying that's true, but it's definitely making me think twice about watching these new releases... 💡

I'm super stoked about "The Guest"! 🤯 The way Dan Stevens plays the mysterious veteran is so chilling, I can already imagine the scenes where he's like a human Terminator 😱🔫. And don't even get me started on "The Descent 2", that cave system is going to give me nightmares for weeks 🐜💀. But what really caught my attention is "Train to Busan Presents: The Last Breathing", I love how they start off with a normal investigation and then turn it into this dark, psychological nightmare 😵👻. Can't wait to watch all these horror flicks this Halloween season!

Ugh, Halloween just got so much better! I mean, who needs the same old creepy clown movies when you've got "The Guest" bringing that Terminator vibe with some serious David Collins vibes? 😅 And don't even get me started on "The Descent 2", that cave system is like, totally terrifying. But what's really got me hyped is "The Empty Man". I know the director's vision was messed with, but it still managed to become this awesome folk horror thingy... and now I need to watch all these movies ASAP before Halloween! 💀🎃

omg I'm so glad I got roped into watching all these new horror movies 🤣 "The Guest" is gonna be so meta since the star plays like a super creepy stalker... just what I need to watch before halloween 😂 and btw can we talk about how the last one sounds like it's trying way too hard to be edgy? slow burn tension is cool but come on, no need for all that angst 🙄

I'M SO EXCITED FOR HALLOWEEN THIS YEAR!!! I've been hearing great things about "The Guest" and I'm intrigued by the whole mysterious veteran thing... DAN STEVENS IS SUCH A GREAT ACTOR!!! 🤩 Also, I've always wanted to check out "The Descent 2"... WHO DOESN'T LOVE A GOOD CLAUSTROPHOBIC HORROR?! 😱 And "The Empty Man" sounds so weird and intriguing... FOLK HORROR AND DETECTIVE THRILLER?! YES PLEASE!!! 🎃

I'm so stoked for Halloween this year! I've been keeping an eye on these new releases and I gotta say, "The Guest" is looking super intense 🤯. The combination of action and horror is just what I need to get my adrenaline pumping. And can we talk about how eerie it sounds to have a mysterious vet showing up at someone's family home? It's like something out of a bad dream 😳. I'm also really curious about "The Last Breathing", the Japanese thriller that turns from a serial killer procedural into something way darker and more unsettling 🕷️. Anyone else excited for these new horror movies this Halloween season? 😄

I'm so stoked for this Halloween season already! I mean, who doesn't love a good scare? 🎃️ And these new flicks look like they're gonna deliver! I've been trying to watch as many indie horror movies as possible, and it's awesome to see some cult classics on the rise. But honestly, have you guys seen those old-school haunted house movies? Like, from the 70s and 80s? They still hold up today, in my opinion. The way they build tension and create this eerie atmosphere is just masterful. And I'm all about that DIY spirit - if someone makes a horror movie with a lot of heart and creativity, but maybe not so much cash, you know what? I'm down for it!

Man, think about how we've become so desensitized to fear in our daily lives 🤯. We're constantly exposed to scary stuff online and in the media, but still manage to roll with it like it's just another normal part of life 😴. Meanwhile, movies like these ones are like a punch in the gut - they take us back to that primal feeling of fear that we thought we'd outgrown 🎃. It's crazy how much art can tap into our deepest anxieties and still manage to be entertaining at the same time... it's like, what does that even say about us as human beings?

OMG u guys its finally october 🎃👻 and i am SOOO hyped for some new horror movies!!! 🍿😱 "The Guest" sounds like a total game changer with dan stevens as the creepy vetrn 🤖, but omg the cave system in "The Descent 2" is literally giving me anxiety 😵🌲. and i heard "The Empty Man" wasnt supposed to be that good cuz of the studio interfering 🙄, but still gotta check it out cuz its folk horror tho! 🤪 and lastly "Train to Busan Presents: The Last Breathing" is literally on my bucket list 💀🚂 cant wait for these movies come out!!

Omg just saw the trailer for "The Empty Man" 🕷️😱 still creepy even with studio interference lol how do filmmakers not get it right though? 😔
