Aldi is set to expand its presence in Chicago's South Loop, as a permit has been issued for a new location at the Roosevelt Collection retail complex. The German-based grocery chain plans to renovate and retrofit the existing space, which will be part of an open-air mall on 150 W. Roosevelt Road.
As part of this expansion, Aldi is expected to bring its unique shopping experience to the area, with plans to offer quicker, easier, and more affordable options for customers. The company's CEO, Jason Hart, has stated that Aldi aims to become America's first stop for groceries, as it continues to grow its nationwide presence.
Aldi is on track to meet its goal of opening 800 new stores across the country by the end of 2028, with nearly 120 locations opened in 2024. The company currently operates 32 locations throughout Chicago and has announced plans to open several more stores in the coming years, including a River North location set for November and a West Loop store expected to open in 2026.
The new Aldi location is part of the Roosevelt Collection's ongoing developments, which include the recent opening of an AMC Roosevelt 16 movie theater. Other retailers and restaurants at the complex include H&M, The X Pot, and Old Navy.

And with their unique shopping experience, people are gonna flock to that new location. I'm curious, what makes them think they can become America's first stop for groceries? Are they really gonna disrupt the grocery game like that? Either way, more Aldi stores = happy consumers!

They're really changing the game with their quick shopping experience, and I'm all about that convenience. I hope they can bring some of that same magic to this new location at the Roosevelt Collection. And can you imagine having an AMC movie theater right next door?

And I'm not sure what's so appealing about "quicker, easier, and more affordable" grocery shopping... where's the charm in that? Plus, I'm worried they're gonna lose some of the character that makes South Loop so awesome in the first place. Like, do we really need another open-air mall with a giant Aldi taking up space that could've been used for something more unique or local?
