I've been lucky enough to visit Capetown a few times and it's literally got the best of both worlds - the mountains are insane and the food is straight fire ! I mean, have you tried their bobotie? It's like a party in your mouth . But what really gets me is how they're not just preserving their culture, but actually pushing the boundaries of it too. Like, have you seen the designs coming out of Jo'burg right now? That's innovation at its finest! And I love that they're incorporating all these indigenous ingredients into their cooking - it's like a taste sensation . But honestly, what I think is most impressive is how they've turned their history into something beautiful and educational. Visiting the Robben Island museum was such an eye-opener for me... it really puts things into perspective.
I'm not convinced about all these new developments in Cape Town... I mean, sure, it's lovely that the chefs are using indigenous ingredients, but is it really sustainable? And don't even get me started on those fancy hotel spas - aren't they just a fancy way of saying 'overpriced relaxation'?
And what's with all the focus on direct flights and Michelin recognition? Is it really necessary for a city to be 'world-class' just because it has a few nice restaurants? I've been to Cape Town a few times, and while it's definitely a pretty place, I don't think it's necessarily any more special than other cities with similar landscapes. Plus, have you seen the prices of accommodation there lately? It's like they're trying to price out the locals.
I guess what really gets my goat is that all these 'transformation' stories are just glossing over the real issues faced by the city's residents. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's great that Cape Town has come a long way since apartheid, but we need to be honest about the struggles that still exist. Maybe instead of celebrating its natural beauty and cultural renaissance, we should be talking about how to make sure everyone in this city has access to decent healthcare, education, and jobs?
omg have u guys ever been 2 cape town? it's literally the most beautiful city i've ever seen! table mountain is on point, & muizenberg beach is perfect 4 surfers! but what really gets me is how they're embracing their heritage through food & design. south african cuisine is insane right now! & have u heard of those new wineries? i'm totally planning a trip back soon!
