Ben Affleck's Best Director Oscars Snub Still a Burning Issue for Him.
The 2013 Oscar snub for Ben Affleck as best director for his film 'Argo' still seems like an embarrassing moment in the actor's career. The film won the award for Best Picture, but Affleck was not even nominated for this prestigious title, despite directing and starring in it.
"I woke up that morning, and sure enough - people were saying I didn’t get nominated," Affleck told late-night host Jimmy Kimmel recently. "It seemed like there were 500 people dying to talk to me...and every single one of them said, 'Hi. So, the snub. What do you say to that? Ha, ha, ha, yeah. It’s a bummer.'"
The film did win the 2013 Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Director and Best Picture. However, Affleck felt mortified by not being nominated for either category.
"It was more kind of like having to be put through the ritual of them answering for why you didn’t get nominated," he told Kimmel.
Affleck pointed out that during his acceptance speech, he gave a nod to award-winning director Steven Spielberg and other films that were nominated. However, his snub still stings.
Argo, released in 2012, is based on the true story of Tony Mendez, a CIA agent who acted undercover as a Hollywood producer scouting locations for a science fiction film during the US hostage crisis in Iran in 1979. The movie won three Oscars that year.
It seems like Affleck's feelings about his snub are still quite raw, even years after it happened. Despite facing criticism and skepticism from many people at the time, he continues to work on new projects, including a Netflix movie called "The Rip".
