Bills fire Sean McDermott after 9 seasons of falling short of reaching Super Bowl, AP sources say

The Buffalo Bills have made a surprise move, firing longtime head coach Sean McDermott just two days after the team's elimination from the playoffs in heartbreaking fashion. According to sources with direct knowledge of the decision, McDermott's tenure has come to an abrupt end after nine seasons of underwhelming postseason performances.

McDermott had transformed the franchise into a perennial contender during his time at the helm, boasting a 98-50 regular-season record and an 8-8 playoff resume. While he ranks second on the team list in wins behind Hall of Fame coach Marv Levy, who won 112 games over 11 seasons, McDermott's inability to guide the team to the Super Bowl has been his greatest weakness.

Josh Allen, who broke many passing and scoring records set by Jim Kelly during the Bills' four consecutive Super Bowl appearances in the early 1990s, has not been able to lead the team to sustained postseason success. Despite reaching the playoffs for eight consecutive seasons, Buffalo has advanced only twice to the AFC championship game – both times falling short against Kansas City.

McDermott's playoff losses have been particularly telling, with three of his final seven seasons ending in heartbreaking overtime defeats, including a 2021 loss that became infamous as "13 seconds" due to Patrick Mahomes' timely heroics. The team's inability to close out games has been a recurring theme throughout McDermott's tenure.

While McDermott oversaw some impressive regular-season performances, including two team-record matching 13-win seasons in 2022 and 2024, his playoff inconsistencies ultimately proved too much for the organization to overlook.

πŸ€” I'm not sure about firing Sean McDermott so soon after all he's done for the Bills 🏈. He's got some great regular-season records, but playoffs are a whole different story, right? 8-8 isn't bad, but it's just not enough to take the team to the Super Bowl πŸ†. I think Josh Allen needs to be more clutch when it comes down to it – can't have your QB leading the charge and then faltering in crunch time 😬. Still, you gotta respect McDermott for getting the Bills this far... 9 seasons isn't nothing! πŸ‘

πŸ€” I'm kinda surprised they let him go, ya know? I mean, he's had some great years with the Bills, but that one season where Josh Allen threw like 60 touchdowns was pretty lit πŸ”₯. And don't even get me started on the '13 seconds' game - what a bummer πŸ€•. I guess you can't win it all, right? McDermott's got some solid credentials, but playoffs are a whole different story, man 🏈. Maybe they just need someone to come in and shake things up πŸ‘Š

I'm kinda surprised about this change πŸ€”. I know they didn't make it to the Super Bowl again this year, but you'd think they could've kept McDermott around another season or two to try and fix those playoff problems πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. Josh Allen's got all these records broken by Jim Kelly, so I'm not sure what's holding him back from making a deep run in the playoffs 🏈. The team did have some great seasons under McDermott, 13 wins both years, that was pretty impressive 😎. But yeah, playoff losses can be tough to swallow, especially when it feels like you're so close but just can't quite get over the hump πŸ€•. Guess this change might bring in a new coach and hope for better luck next season πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€” what was the point of keeping mcdermott if he just kept letting them lose in the playoffs? 😩 i mean, that 98-50 record looks great on paper but what's the use if they can't even win it all? 🏈 and another thing, is josh allen really a leader or is he just having flashes of brilliance like patrick mahomes does? πŸ’₯ also, why did they wait till two days after the playoffs to fire him? seems kinda impulsive to me... πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

OMG, I'm SHOOK!! 🀯 Sean McDermott's firing is like, totally unexpected! I mean, I know he didn't lead the team to a Super Bowl, but still... πŸ˜” Josh Allen has all the talent in the world and we just can't get it together! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ Eight consecutive playoff appearances without even getting past the AFC championship game? That's like, super frustrating! 🀯 And those OT losses are still giving me nightmares 😩. I guess McDermott just wasn't the right coach for this team, but I'm gonna miss him anyway... πŸ’” Can we get a new coach already and bring home that Super Bowl?! πŸ†πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€” I mean, I'm not surprised they let him go, but it's still kinda crazy. Nine seasons is a long time, you know? McDermott's gotta be one of the most underappreciated coaches in the league πŸ€‘. He did build up that team and get some solid wins, but yeah, playoff games are a whole different story 🏈. Can't lead your team to victory when it matters most. The Bills need someone who can close out those wins, you feel? πŸ”’

man that's crazy they just fired sean mcdermott after all the good he did for that franchise I mean yeah he had some bad playoff losses but you can't blame him entirely josh allen is a talented QB but sometimes i think he gets too much credit when things go south and not enough when they go right also those overtime losses were crazy like what even is going on out there in the 4th quarter 🀯

OMG u gotta be kiddin me about Sean McDermott gettin fired like that πŸ˜‚πŸ€―! I mean i no he had some decent wins but all those playoff losses r just too much 2 handle. He's got a rep fer closin games out and it sounds like the team just cldnt hang with KC no more πŸ€• Josh Allen's got skillz but leadin the team 2 the promised land? not so much πŸ€”. Guess u gotta make changes when ur doin more harm than good πŸ’―

The Bills' move to fire Sean McDermott is a no-brainer πŸ€”. I mean, think about it - he's had some great regular season years, but the playoffs are a different beast altogether πŸ’ͺ. Eight consecutive playoff appearances is impressive, but only two AFC championship game appearances in that time? That's just not enough πŸ”₯. And those overtime losses... ugh, it's like they're cursed πŸ˜‚. You can't win if you can't close out games. I guess Josh Allen needs a new coach to help him lead the team to success 🀞. McDermott's tenure may be over, but I'm hoping this change brings about some positive changes for the Bills in the future πŸ’•.
