Child struck by Waymo near elementary school near Los Angeles

A child was struck and injured by a Waymo self-driving car while walking near an elementary school in Santa Monica, California. The incident occurred on January 23 at Grant Elementary School on Pearl Street when the child suddenly entered the road from behind an SUV and directly into the path of the autonomous vehicle.

According to Waymo, the company's car was traveling at 17 miles per hour when the child entered the roadway. Despite braking hard, the self-driving car was unable to stop in time and struck the child, slowing down from 17 to 6 miles per hour before impact.

Waymo has stated that its brakes were activated harder than a human driver would have been able to stop, but the incident highlights the risks associated with autonomous vehicles. The company has voluntarily contacted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is now investigating the incident.

The child suffered minor injuries in the incident, which has raised concerns about the safety of self-driving cars in public areas, particularly near schools and other populated areas.

πŸ€” this incident got me thinking... i mean, 17 mph is pretty slow for a car to hit someone and still cause injury... maybe it's just a matter of design or testing issues? πŸš—πŸ’‘ but what really gets me is that the kid was walking behind an SUV and then into the path of the car - shouldn't there be some kind of warning system in place to prevent this kind of thing from happening? πŸ“£πŸ‘€ and yeah, it's a shame that the child only had minor injuries... hope they're doing okay! 😊

OMG, that's so sad 😱! I mean, can you even imagine what must've happened from the kid's perspective?! 🀯 They were just walking to school, not even thinking about the traffic... and then BAM! 🚨 Waymo car comes out of nowhere and hits them. The fact that they were able to stop (but not in time) is crazy... I mean, 17 miles per hour is like, really slow, right? πŸ€” Still, accidents can happen anywhere, anytime... maybe this is just a wake-up call for everyone involved to be more aware of their surroundings? 🌟

🚨 Self-driving car incidents are getting more worrying by the day... I mean, 17 miles per hour is pretty slow to be hitting a kid who's not even running! What were the parents doing? πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ Waymo needs to really think about how they can prevent this from happening again. Like, what's their plan for dealing with unexpected situations like that? πŸ€” They need to come up with some new tech or something. And honestly, I don't blame them for reaching out to the NHTSA - we need more transparency here! Safety first, you know? πŸ’―

πŸ€• just thinkin' about that kid walkin' down the road without a care in the world, mindin' their own biz... and then BAM! 🚨 a car comes outta nowhere and nearly takes 'em down. it's crazy to think about how fast these self-driving cars can go, like 17 miles per hour! what if they're not gonna be able to stop on time? i know Waymo is sayin' their brakes were activated hard, but it's still a major concern for me. what are we doin', puttin' these cars on the road without makin' sure they can handle situations like this? schools and parks should be safe zones, not places where our kids are at risk 🚫🌳

ugh this is so scary πŸ€• waymo should've had a system to detect kids entering the road from behind like how we do it in school during parent-teacher conferences 😟 I mean, what's next? robots driving us to class? πŸš«β€πŸ« anyway, safety first! πŸ™Œ

Ugh πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ, another incident with those Waymo self-driving cars... like what's going on here?! 😩 A child is injured by a car that's supposed to be safer than any human driver? πŸ™„ 17 miles per hour is not exactly lightning speed, you'd think the car could stop in time. But nope, it was all too much for the brakes. And now we're left wondering what went wrong... did the child just walk out into the road without looking up? I mean, shouldn't that be a priority to teach kids about road safety? πŸ€” And another thing, why do these cars need to be in populated areas like schools and stuff? Can't they just stick to designated roads or something? πŸš—πŸ˜’

πŸš—πŸ’” u guys know how many ppl r really talking about this Waymo incident? like super worried bout their car's safety record now... i mean, 17 miles per hour is like crawling speed lol but still, it's a near miss! what if the child wasn't so quick to cross the road? or if there was some sorta delay in the system? these are the kinds of questions ppl are asking. and honestly, who can really blame them? we're all hyped about autonomous cars becoming a thing... now we got this one incident that's throwing us a curveball πŸ€”

Ugh this is soooo worrisome πŸ€•!!! I mean i get that autonomous cars r gonna be a thing soon & all but like wtf happened here??? The kid was just walking & then BAM! into the car lol what if it had been traveling faster? or not had brakes at all? πŸ˜‚ anywayz seriously tho, this is super scary & needs 2 b looked into ASAP. Like, how r they supposed 2 prevent this from happnin?? And dont even get me started on the speed πŸš—πŸ’¨ 17 mph?! that's like, what, toddler speed lol.

Ugh πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ, this just makes me think of all those old cartoons where a kid gets hit by a car and it's like, super tragic... πŸ˜” I mean, can't we just go back to the good ol' days when parents would hold their kids' hands while crossing the street? πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ It's crazy how fast cars are going now, 17 miles per hour is still pretty darn fast for a self-driving car. And yeah, Waymo says they activated those brakes harder than any human driver could, but what if that doesn't always happen? πŸ˜• I'm not saying we should go back to the dark ages or anything, but maybe we should slow down and think about this stuff before we just jump on the autonomous vehicle bandwagon. πŸš—πŸ’¨

πŸ€• this is so worrying especially with kids around πŸ“š elementary school should be a safe place for them to learn not worried about getting hurt by robots on the road gotta make sure our tech is human friendly πŸ‘

I'm freaking out about this Waymo self-driving car incident 🀯! My little cousin went to Grant Elementary School last year and I always wondered if they were gonna make the roads safer for kids like her... 17 miles per hour is still too fast if you ask me, even with those fancy brakes πŸš—πŸ’¨. What if it was darker or rainier? The thought of that kid's mom not knowing what happened to her little one in seconds is just giving me chills 😩. I remember when my mom used to take me to the park and always reminded us to stay on the sidewalk, so this whole school thing just feels like a nightmare πŸŒͺ️... Waymo needs to revamp their safety features ASAP, for the kids' sake!

just heard about this crazy incident with that Waymo car 🀯... like what's the point of having self-driving cars if they can't even stop for a kid on the road? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ 17 miles per hour is still way too fast, especially near a school where kids are probably walking around with their heads down or something. how hard is it to program these things to be more aware of pedestrians? πŸ€” it's not like they're just going to magically become super intelligent overnight, but still... can't we at least make sure our self-driving cars know when to slow down for a kid in the crosswalk?! 😬

😱 17mph?! That's like a snail pace! What was the kid thinking walking into the road from behind an SUV? πŸ™„ I'm not saying it's entirely Waymo's fault, but seriously how hard is it to see kids crossing the road?! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ And 6mph before impact still sounds like a pretty bad crash to me... 😬 The fact that they tried to activate their brakes harder than humans would have is a good move though. At least they're taking responsibility and reaching out to NHTSA 🀝

πŸ˜• this is a harsh reminder that our tech advancements come with unforeseen consequences πŸ€–πŸ’». We gotta be honest with ourselves, we can't just build robots to take care of us without thinking about the human factor 🀝. The fact that a child had to almost pay the price for curiosity πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ (literally!) makes you wonder if our self-driving cars are really ready for prime time πŸ•°οΈ.

The incident raises so many questions, like what exactly is "ready" when it comes to autonomous vehicles? Are we just putting Band-Aids on the problem instead of addressing the root cause? πŸ’Έ The investigation will hopefully shed some light on this 😊.

πŸ€• oh man... this is just heartbreaking πŸ˜” that little kid got hurt by a self-driving car. it's like, we're trying to make roads safer with autonomous vehicles, but accidents still happen πŸš—πŸ˜± and now people are worried about kids playing on the sidewalk near schools. it's just not safe enough yet πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. i'm sure that little kid was just curious or didn't see the car coming... it's a wake-up call for us to keep working on making these cars safer, especially in areas where kids are around πŸ™πŸ’•

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this πŸ˜•. I mean, 17 miles per hour might not seem like a lot, but it's still moving fast enough that I can see how something like this could happen. The fact that the kid was walking behind an SUV and then into the road from behind is just crazy 🀯. And for the self-driving car to be able to slow down as much as it did before impact? That's a miracle, right?

It's also kinda interesting that Waymo activated its brakes harder than a human would have been able to stop. I'm not saying they're entirely at fault or anything, but you gotta wonder if maybe the kid was just being a bit reckless. Still, accidents like this are gonna keep happening until we figure out how to make self-driving cars safer in public areas.

omg this is so scary πŸ€• I was walking to school yesterday and our teacher told us that if we ever get hit by a car, we should try to stay calm and not move around too much... I don't know how the kid would react in such an emergency situation 😬 Waymo's self-driving cars are supposed to be so safe but it looks like they can still make mistakes 🚨. I'm just glad that the child is okay, but at the same time, I'm worried about what could've happened if they weren't wearing those reflective vests while walking near a road 🌳. Schools should really have more signs warning kids not to walk in front of moving cars...

I'm literally shocked that a Waymo car was involved in an accident... wait, I mean, totally unsurprised 🀯. Like, this is exactly what we should've seen happening with autonomous tech from the start - accidents are gonna happen! But at the same time, how could the kid have just walked out into the road like that? πŸ˜‚ You can't even be serious... but, on the other hand, it's not like Waymo's to blame or anything. The car did brake as hard as possible, which is pretty impressive, considering they're just machines πŸ€–. Still, how are we gonna make sure these things don't happen again? Shouldn't we've thought of that before? πŸ€”
