A child was struck and injured by a Waymo self-driving car while walking near an elementary school in Santa Monica, California. The incident occurred on January 23 at Grant Elementary School on Pearl Street when the child suddenly entered the road from behind an SUV and directly into the path of the autonomous vehicle.
According to Waymo, the company's car was traveling at 17 miles per hour when the child entered the roadway. Despite braking hard, the self-driving car was unable to stop in time and struck the child, slowing down from 17 to 6 miles per hour before impact.
Waymo has stated that its brakes were activated harder than a human driver would have been able to stop, but the incident highlights the risks associated with autonomous vehicles. The company has voluntarily contacted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is now investigating the incident.
The child suffered minor injuries in the incident, which has raised concerns about the safety of self-driving cars in public areas, particularly near schools and other populated areas.
