Did you solve it? Two dead at the drink-off – a brilliant new lateral thinking puzzle

Two people dead in drink-off: clever lateral thinking puzzle exposes tragic mistake.

The Queen's plan was straightforward: Smith and Jones, the only poison manufacturers, would each bring a vial of their own poison to a ceremony. They'd drink from each other's vials first, followed by their own, and be watched for an hour. The strongest poison would guarantee survival. But what went wrong?

It turned out both competitors had been playing it too cautious. In their desperation to survive, Smith and Jones decided to trick the Queen into giving them a way out. They brought weak poisons – in this case water – instead of strong ones, hoping to drink each other's stronger poison as an antidote, thereby saving themselves.

However, each person thought the other wouldn't take this risk, so they both ended up drinking water before it was their turn to drink from each other and then their own vials. When they drank the Queen's poisonous wine, it proved too much for them, causing them to die within an hour.

The puzzle mastermind behind this brain teaser is Michael Rabin, created in the 1980s. It has recently gained attention through Timothy Chow of Princeton University's Centre for Communications Research.

OMG you guys 🤯 I'm literally shaking my head over this one... like what were they thinking?! 🙈 They thought playing it safe by bringing weak poisons would save their lives? And both of them thought the other wouldn't do the same thing? It's like, basic human psychology right there... people are gonna read into any situation where they can "get out alive" and take risks. The Queen must've been literally watching her competitors all day waiting for this exact outcome 🤦‍♀️ And that lateral thinking puzzle mastermind Michael Rabin is straight fire 🔥 I mean, this isn't a brain teaser, it's just human nature 😂

I'm so disappointed that those two people didn't make it out alive 🤕... I mean, you'd think they'd be smart enough to figure it out on their own before trying to trick the Queen 😂. It's like they were both thinking the same way, but not in a good way... each one trying to outsmart the other and end up dying as a result 💔. The puzzle itself is actually kinda clever, though 🤯. I love how it shows that even when we think we're being smart, things can go hilariously wrong 😂. So there was these two guys who wanted to drink each other out... I mean, literally 🤣. They think they can outsmart the Queen and her poisonous wine? More like out-sillied themselves 😂. Can you imagine trying to trust someone with your life when it's a drink-off? "I'll bring water, you bring poison... nope, I'm gonna bring poison too" 🤦‍♂️. The moral of the story is: don't try this at home (or in a brain teaser) folks 👀.

This whole thing is wild 😱 I mean can u imagine being in a situation where ur life depends on ur fellow competitors? They were so desperate to survive they basically became blind to each other's moves 🙈. Its like they thought the Queen would somehow magically intervene or something 🤣. Meanwhile, this puzzle mastermind Michael Rabin is just over here like "I created this scenario to show u how easily things can go wrong" 🤦‍♂️. The fact that it took a modern-day expert to revive the puzzle is crazy too! It just goes to show how timeless puzzles like this are 💡

I don’t usually comment but I just can’t help feeling sorry for those two people. I mean, they must have been so scared and desperate to survive. Playing it cautious and trying to outsmart the Queen is one thing, but it seems like they both made a huge mistake... 🤦‍♂️. And then you think about all the people watching them die... it's just so tragic 😔. I guess sometimes clever thinking can be a double-edged sword, right? 🤯

omg what a crazy story 🤯 I mean who tries to trick the Queen's plan lol? it's like they thought they were on some game show or something 🎮. but anyway, I get why they did it, desperate times and all that 💔. but seriously, lateral thinking puzzles are so clever, reminds me of those 'escape room' games where you gotta solve clues to get out 🕵️‍♀️. the Queen's plan was actually genius too, at least she had a clear plan 🙌. anyhoo, hope Michael Rabin gets the recognition he deserves for creating such a legendary puzzle 🔥👏

lol I feel bad for those two 😔🤦‍♂️ did you see that? they were like "surely we'll both get killed" 🤣 but then they end up killing each other instead 🤷‍♂️ I mean, who needs to be a genius to figure this one out? 87% of people would've seen it coming 📊

Stats on puzzle solvers:

* 42% of men vs 31% of women solve puzzles faster
* People aged 25-34 solve puzzles in 67% less time than those aged 55+
* 21% of people who drink coffee are more likely to solve logic puzzles
* Women are 1.5 times more likely to report solving a puzzle as "easy" compared to men

I gotta say, I think this whole situation with Smith and Jones is a perfect example of how clever people can sometimes be their own worst enemies 😒. They were so desperate to win that they almost took each other out instead 🤦‍♂️. It's like, yeah, the plan was good on paper, but in reality, it just got really messy 💦. I mean, you'd think after all these years, someone would've figured out how to improve upon that design 😐. But hey, at least we can learn from their mistake and appreciate the puzzle itself – not always easy to create, you know? 🤔

It's crazy how a clever idea like that can go terribly wrong. I mean, it's not like they were expecting each other to pull off such a stunt, right? But what really gets me is how they both thought they were outsmarting the Queen, while secretly just being cautious to an extreme degree. It's almost as if they were trying to prove that they weren't going to fall for it... meanwhile, they ended up falling into their own trap 😂. And yeah, I guess you can say it was a tragic mistake all around 🤕.

I gotta say, this drink-off thingy got me thinking... 🤯 If only they had thought about what the other person was REALLY gonna do instead of assuming they'd be too smart to fall for it 😂. Like, if one of them knew the other would try something crazy, wouldn't that just push their own panic button? And what's up with both of them wanting to cheat in the first place? They were so focused on survival that they lost sight of not killing each other 💔. This whole thing is a reminder that even with the smartest plans, human fallibility can still get us into trouble 🤦‍♂️.

I think this whole thing is super overrated . I mean, who needs a death-defying poison-drinking competition when you can just stick to a simple game show? The Queen's plan was so basic and straightforward that it just didn't cut it anymore . And what's with the whole "strongest poison would guarantee survival" thing? That's not even a real thing! You'd think people would've come up with something way more clever than this by now. I mean, I could see this whole thing from miles away – they were both gonna drink that water and die. It's just so... predictable .

🤦‍♂️ Who tries a poison trick on themselves? 🙄 And why do they think the other one won't take it either? 😒 That plan was literally self-destructive! 💀 Guess you can't outsmart your own instincts... or in this case, lack thereof. 👎

I'm still kinda fascinated by how clever (and messed up) that plan was... I mean, who tries to trick a queen into saving their life? Like, what were they thinking?! 🤦‍♂️ It's crazy to think about how two people with the same goal could end up making the same "brilliant" move. I guess it just goes to show that even with lateral thinking, humans can still be super predictable... and foolishly optimistic. Anyway, kudos to Michael Rabin for creating such a mind-bending puzzle - it's pretty wild how it's still got us all talking 40+ years later! 😂

I got it wrong about this one 🤦‍♂️... I mean, who drinks water thinking the other person won't do the same? That's not lateral thinking, that's just basic logic 🙄. I was expecting some clever move to outsmart the Queen, but nope, they both played it safe and ended up dying 💀. You'd think they'd at least try to figure out the other person's plan before going ahead with their own... or just be honest and say "I'm out" 🤷‍♂️. Michael Rabin might've been a genius in creating this puzzle, but I'm still not impressed 😒.

Ugh, can you even believe how messed up this story is? I mean, what kind of thinking game gets someone to think that drinking water as an antidote would save their life in a poison-drinking competition?! It just goes to show how desperate people got when they realized they'd be watching each other drink. The Queen's plan was genius at first, but those two were like "oh no, we're gonna die" and then they both thought the same thing... it's just so sad 🤕💔

I gotta say, I was like "what were they thinking??" This whole situation is just crazy 🤯. You'd think that people who are trying to kill each other would be smart enough to not fall for a trap like this, but I guess desperation can lead you to some pretty stupid decisions 😔.

And honestly, it's kinda impressive that these two guys managed to come up with a plan at all, even if it was super flawed. It just goes to show that anyone can think they're smart when it comes to puzzles and stuff like this 🤓. But in real life, things don't always work out so well 💔.

I mean, I get why Michael Rabin created this puzzle - it's meant to be a commentary on human nature or something 😊. And yeah, it's been popularized by Timothy Chow now. But still, it's just hard not to feel bad for these two guys who got caught up in their own game and ended up dead 💀.

I dont get why they had to make it so complicated. Its just two people tryin to kill each other, ya know? Why did they need to trick the queen? They could've just done what she said and drank from each other's vials like normal ppl would do in a deadly situation lol 😂🤦‍♂️. And then it comes out they both ended up drinkin water, it's like they were tryna be heroes or somethin 🙄. I mean I guess its all about the lateral thinking and all that jazz, but sometimes simplicity is the best way to go 😊.
