Mozilla to Give Users Control Over Generative AI Features in Firefox.
In an effort to respect user preferences, Mozilla has announced that it will introduce a new setting in the upcoming Firefox 148 browser update, allowing users to block all generative AI features entirely or selectively enable them.
Starting from February 24, users of Firefox Nightly builds will have access to an AI controls section in the desktop settings. This addition provides a level of control over the various AI-powered tools and features that Mozilla has been integrating into its browser.
The new setting will include options to disable certain features such as chatbots in the sidebar, automated translations, and alt text generation for PDFs. Users will also be able to opt out of webpage previews with "key points" before clicking on a link, and AI-enhanced tab grouping suggestions.
To completely disable all AI enhancements without receiving pop-up notifications about current or upcoming features, users can simply toggle the "Block AI enhancements" option to the 'on' position.
This move by Mozilla is seen as an effort to strike a balance between harnessing the potential of generative AI while respecting user autonomy. By providing users with the ability to opt out of unwanted features, Mozilla aims to create a faster, more secure, and streamlined web browsing experience.
