A French taxi driver accused of stealing from David Lammy has been acquitted due to a lack of evidence. Nassim Mimun, 40, drove Lammy and his wife Nicola Green over 600km from Italy to the French Alps in April last year. However, when the fare was finalized, the tone escalated, leading Mimun to drop their luggage at a municipal police station later that day.
The driver claimed Lammy had refused to pay β¬700 of the β¬1,550 bill and became aggressive when asked. However, this claim was deemed unconvincing by prosecutors. The driver's actions were seen as theft due to the length of time he kept the passengers' belongings in his possession.
Lammy and Mimun both filed complaints, but only Lammy's was deemed substantial enough for a charge of theft to be brought against the Frenchman. Despite the accusations, prosecutors found that they lacked sufficient evidence to prove Mimun guilty.
The Foreign Office stated that Lammy and his wife were victims in the case, with Lammy denying he had refused to pay the driver. The incident occurred during a state visit to Italy, where Lammy was meeting King Charles, before continuing on to the French Alps for a private holiday.
