HMS Pinafore review – carry on up the poop deck in ENO's daffy Gilbert and Sullivan staging

English National Opera's latest production of Gilbert and Sullivan's 'HMS Pinafore' is a sidesplitting romp that will have you chuckling from start to finish. The show has lost none of its zany charm, with director Cal McCrystal bringing the period piece up-to-date by infusing it with references to 1970s British comedy and Carry On films.

The production's strongest asset is its cast, who bring a level of physical comedy that will leave you giggling uncontrollably. Neal Davies shines as the debonair Sir Joseph Porter, while John Savournin brings a winning warmth to the role of Captain Corcoran. The chemistry between the leads is undeniable, and their performances are matched by the impressive talents of Rhonda Browne, who steals the show as the lovelorn Buttercup.

But the real star of the show has to be Mel Giedroyc, who takes on not one but two roles with remarkable aplomb. Her anarchic energy brings a new level of unpredictability to 'HMS Pinafore', and her performances are a joy to watch.

The supporting cast is equally impressive, with standout turns from Thomas Atkins as the lovable simpleton Ralph and Trevor Eliot Bowes as the hammy Dick Deadeye. Matthew Kofi Waldren's masterful arrangements bring the music to life, and the ENO chorus delivers a tour-de-force performance in Lizzi Gee's lively choreography.

If there's one area where 'HMS Pinafore' falls short, it's in some of the jokes that fall flat – but even these couldn't detract from the show's overall sense of joy and abandon. With its dazzling costumes, slick lighting, and side-splitting cast, this is a production that will have you grinning from ear to ear.

The only surprise here is just how well 'HMS Pinafore' holds up in the modern era – this is a show that never went out of style, and ENO's latest staging proves why. It may be a bit of a dodgy proposition for some, but for everyone else, it's a treat that will leave you feeling merry and bright.

🤣 I just watched 'HMS Pinafore' at the English National Opera and I'm still chuckling 🤷‍♀️! The cast is absolutely brilliant, especially Mel Giedroyc who steals every scene with her two roles 😂. I love how they updated the period piece with 1970s British comedy references - it's genius! 🤓 The choreography by Lizzi Gee is also super lively and the chorus kills it 💃. My only gripe is that some of the jokes feel a bit dated, but honestly who cares when the show is this much fun? 😁 I think what I love most about 'HMS Pinafore' is its pure, unadulterated joy - it's like a big ol' hug in theatre form 🤗. ENO really outdid themselves with this production and if you haven't seen it yet, do get thee to the opera ASAP! 👏

🤣 OMG I loved the new 'HMS Pinafore' at English National Opera!!! Mel Giedroyc stealing the show is no joke 😂 I mean, two roles?!? Genius! 🤯 The chemistry between Neal Davies & John Savournin is everything 💕 And that chorus dance routine in Lizzi Gee's choreography was pure magic ✨ Thomas Atkins as Ralph is like the ultimate lovable dweeb 😆👍 Did you catch any of those Carry On references? 😄

I'm loving the new production of HMS Pinafore! The cast is literally on fire 🤩, especially Mel Giedroyc who steals the show (and two roles no less!) 😂. I mean, who wouldn't want to watch a hilarious romp with anarchic energy and side-splitting comedy? The chemistry between Neal Davies and John Savournin as Sir Joseph Porter and Captain Corcoran is undeniable too - they're like two peas in a pod 🤝.

But what really caught my attention was the cast's physical comedy skills, it had me giggling uncontrollably 😂. And kudos to Rhonda Browne for stealing the show as Buttercup! Matthew Kofi Waldren's masterful arrangements are also on point 🎵.

Now, I'm not gonna lie, some of the jokes did feel a bit dodgy at times 😜, but honestly, it didn't detract from the overall joy and abandon of the show. ENO's latest staging is pure magic ✨ - it's like they say, you can't go wrong with a classic!

🤣 I just watched the English National Opera's 'HMS Pinafore' and I'm DYING from laughter! The cast is literally comedic gold – Neal Davies as Sir Joseph Porter is perfection 😂, and Mel Giedroyc taking on TWO roles at once? Mind. Blown. 🤯 The supporting cast isn't bad either, Thomas Atkins's Ralph is so lovable you'll want to give him a big hug ❤️. I was giggling nonstop even when some of the jokes fell flat (lol, it happens 😂). But honestly, who cares about that? This production is pure joy and abandon – ENO got it spot on! 🎉 The costumes, lighting, music... everything comes together to create a show that's just ridiculously fun. Can't wait to see what they do next 🤔

omg i just saw the opera review 🤣 i love how they updated 'hms pinafore' with 70s british comedy refs lol mel giedroyc is literally killing it with her dual roles 😂👏 neal davies and john savournin are also absolute perfection as sirs joseph porter and captain corcoran 🤣 i'm not surprised the show still holds up so well, the music is just too catchy 🎵 anyway, who needs a perfect joke when you have this much laughter and joy to go around? 😄

lol I mean, what's up with Mel Giedroyc taking on TWO roles? That's just ridiculous! She must've had some serious method acting going on or something . But seriously though, I love how they updated the show to include 70s British comedy references - it adds a fresh spin to an old classic. And can we talk about Neal Davies as Sir Joseph Porter? He's got game 😎

I just saw the English National Opera's 'HMS Pinafore' and OMG I'm DYING 😂🤣! The cast is so talented, especially Mel Giedroyc - she's absolutely amazing in her two roles 🤩. I love how they updated it with 70s British comedy references, it adds a fresh twist to the classic show 💡. And can we talk about Neal Davies as Sir Joseph Porter? Swoon 😍. The music is also on point, Matthew Kofi Waldren's arrangements are genius 🎵. It's not perfect, some jokes might fall flat, but honestly who cares when it's this much fun 🤷‍♀️? I'm already counting down the days until their next show 📆

🤣 I was literally crying laughing in the theatre 🎭😂. Mel Giedroyc is a comedic genius 👏 and her dual roles are pure magic ✨. The cast is on point and the energy is infectious 🌟. It's not just a romp, it's a full-on party in your seat 🎉. I was worried some jokes would fall flat but honestly who cares when the whole show is this much fun 😊?

I just saw this new production of HMS Pinafore at the English National Opera 🎭😂 and I gotta say, it brought back memories of watching Gilbert and Sullivan operas with my grandparents back in the 90s... they used to love those classic comedies too! The cast is absolutely fantastic, Mel Giedroyc steals the show as always (she's like a British comedy legend or something 🤣), and the energy on stage is infectious. I loved how they updated some of the jokes with references to 70s British comedy - it was so clever! The set design and costumes were also top-notch, I felt like I was transported back to the 80s naval days... but at the same time, it still felt modern and fresh? What's not to love about a show that makes you laugh and sing along?

I'm soooo not surprised they're still dragging up this old Gilbert & Sullivan show 🤣. I mean, come on, it's just a bunch of outdated British comedy bits strung together with some dodgy jokes thrown in for good measure 😒. The cast is fine, I guess, but let's be real, they're not exactly breaking any new ground here 👀. And don't even get me started on the costumes and lighting – it's just a bunch of flashy stuff to distract us from how stale the show really is 🙄. And what's with Mel Giedroyc doing two roles? Just more proof that they can't be bothered to come up with something new and original 🤦‍♀️.

🤦‍♂️ Just saw the review for English National Opera's 'HMS Pinafore' and I'm kinda surprised they're saying this show is still going strong... I mean, we all know how long Gilbert and Sullivan's comedies last in terms of staying relevant 🙄. The cast looks decent but let's be real, it's just a bunch of old jokes with some fancy costumes thrown in 🤑. And what's up with the lead actor playing two roles? That's just confusing 🤔. Not to mention, I've been tracking global warming and sea levels rising for years... do we really need a 19th century show about the British Navy to bring us joy when the world is literally burning 🔥?

🤦‍♂️ just saw the new Gilbert and Sullivan production at English National Opera 🎭 & I'm like "when is it gonna end?" 😓 they say its 1970s British comedy but all I see are outdated jokes about love, war, and sailing 🚣‍♂️🌊 meanwhile the cast gets to do some actual physical comedy that's kinda funny I guess 🤔

omg i just saw this opera thingy and it was literally the best thing ever! 🤣 I mean i've been dating my partner for like 3 years now and we both loved it when they sang the romantic part together, it got me all sentimental 😭 but also i have to say the supporting cast is SO funny, esp that one guy who played dick deadeye was hilarious 🤦‍♂️. anyway i'm kinda surprised eno did this production again because i thought they were gonna try something new but i guess you can't mess with a classic 🙌. my fave part tho was when mel giedroyc sang her heart out, she's like the queen of comedy 😂

I'm lovin' this new production of 'HMS Pinafore' 🤣! The cast is absolutely on point, especially Mel Giedroyc who's just a riot in her dual roles 😂. I mean, who wouldn't want to watch a show with that kind of energy and anarchic spirit? But what really gets me is how well the 70s British comedy references work – it's like they're speaking my language! 📺 The only thing that'd make this production perfect would be if some of those jokes landed a bit harder, but honestly, I'm too busy laughing to care 😆. The ENO chorus is also serving up some serious face-melting performances – I mean, that tour-de-force choreography? 🤩 I'm in my feels!

I'm so down with the new HMS Pinafore production at English National Opera 💃🕺! The cast is absolutely on point, especially Mel Giedroyc who totally steals the show with her two roles 🤣. I loved how they incorporated 1970s British comedy references and Carry On films into the show - it's such a fun twist 🎬. The choreography by Lizzi Gee was amazing and the arrangements by Matthew Kofi Waldren were spot on 🎵. I'm not sure about some of the jokes that fell flat, but overall, this production is a real treat 😊. It's amazing how well Gilbert and Sullivan's classic show still holds up today - it just proves that comedy never gets old! 👍

omg i just got back from the most random road trip to the beach with my squad 🏖️🚗 and we had the best time ever! we saw this crazy sunset and it was literally like nothing i've ever seen before 🌅🤯. anyway, going back to this opera thing... i mean, who knew hms pinafore could be so funny? 🤣 i loved mel giedroyc's two roles - she's hilarious! 👏 but you know what's even more fun than a good laugh? trying out new recipes in the kitchen 🍰👨‍🍳. have you guys tried making those cute little pastry balls that look like animals? i found this amazing recipe online and they turned out so adorable 😍🐶

OMG, I'm totally obsessed with the new Gilbert and Sullivan production at English National Opera! 🤣 The cast is literally hilarious, especially Mel Giedroyc who takes on TWO roles - she's like a comedic genius! 😂 And the supporting actors are so talented, Thomas Atkins as Ralph is like the ultimate lovable loser. I loved how they updated the period piece with references to 1970s British comedy and Carry On films too 🎬 The costumes and lighting are also super impressive, it's like stepping back in time. What really surprised me though was how well the jokes held up even when some of them didn't land - the show is just so joyful and fun that you can't help but laugh along! 👏
