How far does $5,000 go when you want an electric car?

The Cost of an Electric Car: Can You Get Away with $5,000?

For many of us, the idea of buying a new car is daunting. The sticker shock from purchasing a brand-new vehicle can be overwhelming. However, for those on a tight budget, there's hope. With prices plummeting and battery technology improving, it's now possible to get your hands on an electric car without breaking the bank.

Let's face it: Electric cars (EVs) still hold back due to their limited range and charging infrastructure. However, if you don't plan on driving long distances or live close to a town with reliable charging points, a cheap EV can be an excellent choice for daily use.

One thing is clear - the first-generation Nissan Leaf is the most common EV under our budget of $5,000. Although it may have limited range and battery degradation issues, used Leafs can still be found at an affordable price. The real key to making these cars viable is choosing a model that was popular and widely supported by its manufacturer.

Another option in this price range is the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, a car with a quirky design but impressive performance. However, it's essential to keep in mind that this car has limited battery capacity and may not be suitable for long-distance driving.

Ultimately, buying an EV on a tight budget requires careful consideration of your needs and the type of car you choose. With the right model and some basic knowledge, owning an electric car can be an affordable and environmentally friendly option.

I think it's crazy that people are even considering $5k for an electric car 🀯... I mean, sure, they're getting cheaper, but is it really worth it? Like, if you need to drive more than 50 miles a day, what's the point of buying an EV? And don't even get me started on charging infrastructure - we still need way more public chargers! πŸ’Έ But at the same time, I'm all for people being eco-friendly and reducing their carbon footprint 🌎. If you're just going to use your car for short trips and have a reliable charger nearby, then go for it! Just don't expect me to trade in my trusty old gas-guzzler anytime soon πŸ˜‚

OMG u gotta get ur hands on that Nissan Leaf!! πŸš—πŸ’š I mean, like, $5k is literally a steal for such an awesome car! And yeah, the range might be limited but who needs to drive all the way to Vegas to fill up every day? πŸ˜‚ Plus, battery degradation issues are super rare so u should probs be good. The i-MiEV is cool n all but I think the Leaf is where it's at 🀩! My dad actually just bought one last year and he loves it πŸ’•

I gotta say, I'm loving the idea of getting into an electric car without breaking the bank πŸ’ΈπŸš—. People are always hating on EVs for their limited range, but let's not forget that most of us don't drive that much πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. Plus, living in a town with good charging points makes all the difference πŸ’‘. I mean, sure, the first-gen Nissan Leaf isn't perfect, but it's a great option for daily driving and you can get one for like $5k which is insane considering what you're getting 🀯. And if you're not set on having super long range, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV is pretty sweet too πŸ‘. What I think people need to do is stop stressing about EVs being a "good enough" option and start thinking about how they can make them work for their lifestyle πŸš—πŸ’¨.

I think getting an old Nissan Leaf or Mitsubishi i-MiEV for $5k is a good idea, but u gotta do ur research first! Like, make sure its not the older model with more battery degradation issues 😊. Also, if u live in an area with reliable charging points, it's def worth considering. And omg, have u seen the prices of new EVs? $30k+ is crazy! πŸ€‘

omg u guys i just bought my 2nd hand nissan leaf for like $4500 it's been 3 yrs now and i still love it so much!! 🀩 i was a bit skeptical about the battery life but honestly it's been doing fine no major issues at all. i live pretty close to a town with charging points tho, so that helped alot 😊 my neighbor got one for like $3000 and his is in even better condition than mine lol what do u guys think? should we start an ecar buying group πŸ’Έ

I think it's awesome that we're seeing more affordable options for EVs! πŸ’š I mean, who wouldn't want to save a few grand on a new ride? πŸ€‘ The first-gen Nissan Leaf might not have the range or battery life of newer models, but it's still a great option for short commutes or city driving. Plus, you can find decent deals on used ones online #UsedCarsForSale πŸ’»

The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is another solid choice, even if its design isn't for everyone πŸ˜’. Its limited battery capacity is definitely something to consider, but hey, it's a great option for those who don't need to drive too far. And let's not forget about the environmental benefits – EVs are just plain cool 🌎!

I'm so over people saying that $5k is a good price for an electric car lol πŸ™„ Like, don't get me wrong, I love saving money, but $5000 is still way too much for something that's gonna need to be replaced in like 8 years anyway? And what about the limited range and charging issues people always bring up? It's not like they're going to magically disappear just because you've got a cheap EV πŸš—πŸ’Έ I mean, sure, it might be okay for short trips or living close to town, but if you need to drive long distances, forget it.

I'm so down for people getting into e-cars on a shoestring budget πŸ€‘! I mean, $5k is like, super reasonable, especially if you don't need to drive like, miles every day. The first-gen Nissan Leaf is like the OG eco-friendly ride, and it's crazy that people can still find them at this price. Just gotta make sure you do your research and pick a model that was popular back in the day, 'cause that's where the magic happens, fam! πŸ€“

omg yea i think its awsum that evs r gettin cheaper!! πŸš€ $5k is def doable for a daily driver if u dont plan on drivin long distances lol. i mean sure they stil have range & charging issues but like wut r u gonna do? just charge it up wen u get home or somethin πŸ˜‚. the nissan leaf is a good option cuz its like super popular 2 b purchased so it holds its value or something. and dont even get me started on the mitsubishi imiev - quirky design tho, idk bout performance tho πŸ€”

I gotta say, $5k is still kinda steep for me πŸ˜…. I mean, don't get me wrong, electric cars are awesome and all, but you're gonna have to sacrifice a bit of range and comfort for that price. And what's with the used Leaf being the most common? That thing's already 10+ years old! Can we expect better deals on newer models in the future? πŸ€”

ive had friends who went from having 2 old cars to one new ev and its actually been a total game changer for them πŸš€ they save so much on gas and maintenance costs its like money in the bank lol i think people need to stop worrying about range and charging infrastructure and just buy something that fits their lifestyle its not worth sacrificing your dream car over something thats gonna be 5 years old

I think it's crazy how far electric cars have come in terms of affordability πŸš€πŸ’‘. I mean, $5,000 is still a pretty low price point for a car, but when you consider the environmental benefits and lower running costs, it starts to make sense. Of course, there are some limitations with these older models like range and charging infrastructure, but if you're short on distance and have easy access to charging points, they could be a great option 🀞. I've heard good things about the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi i-MiEV - anyone who's bought one of those? 😊

I think its totally doable to get away with $5k for an electric car πŸ€‘. I mean, sure, it's not gonna be a Tesla or anything like that... but if you're just looking to use it for daily errands and stuff, then a used Leaf or i-MiEV should be fine 😊. Its all about doing your research and finding the right model. Like, if you can find a popular one from back when the technology was still kinda new, its more likely to hold up better over time 🀞.

And yeah, range is definitely gonna be an issue with some of these cheaper models... but like the article said, if you're not planning on driving long distances, then it shouldn't be too big of a deal. Plus, charging infrastructure is getting better all the time, so that's something to look forward to 🌞.

For me, owning an EV even on a budget is worth it... its just one of those things where the pros totally outweigh the cons. And plus, think about all the money you'll save on gas and maintenance over time πŸ’Έ!
