'I still can't believe I'm alive': Sudanese civilians recount their flight from El Fasher – video

Desperate to Escape: Sudanese Civilians Share Harrowing Ordeal in Western Darfur

Eyewitnesses describe the frantic chaos as they fled El Fasher, a city in western Darfur that has been embroiled in violence for years. "I still can't believe I'm alive," says Amira Ahmed, her voice shaking with emotion.

According to those who witnessed the displacement, fighting broke out in the early hours of January 22nd, catching residents off guard. Panicked screams and gunfire filled the air as citizens scrambled to escape the city's streets.

"I was at home when I heard shots being fired," recounts Aisha Hassan. "I quickly grabbed my family and we ran out into the street." The scene outside was chaotic – people were running wildly in all directions, while others desperately tried to secure their homes.

The exodus from El Fasher has been described as one of the most hasty and panicked evacuations in recent memory. With little notice, civilians found themselves forced to abandon everything behind them in a frantic bid for safety.

"We didn't have time to gather our belongings," admits Mohamed Ibrahim. "We just grabbed what we could carry and ran."

The reasons behind the violence remain unclear, but officials say that fighting has continued unabated despite ongoing efforts to establish peace. As residents flee the city, questions hang over their uncertain future – where will they go, and how long will it take for safety to return?

El Fasher's desperate flight from war has left a trail of heartbreak in its wake. Survivors are struggling to come to terms with what they have lost – homes, livelihoods, and sense of security.

ugh it's just so sad 🤕 these people are going through so much and no one knows when it'll be safe again 🤷‍♀️ i mean i remember the news about darfur back in 2003 and how bad it was then... people were dying left and right over food and water 🌾🏞️ but we thought things would get better after all these years 🙄 sadly they haven't and now entire families are having to leave their homes and start over from scratch 💔 what's the point of even trying for peace if it's just going to be broken again? 😩

🤕 this is so messed up 🚫 people just losing their homes and livelihoods over some petty violence it's not right that civilians have to go through this 😩 the fact that the fighting has continued unabated despite efforts to establish peace is just a slap in the face to those who are trying to rebuild their lives. 🤷‍♂️ what even is going on in Sudan 🤔

I'm seriously thinking about opening my home to some of these displaced people from Sudan... I mean, can you imagine having to leave everything behind in a matter of hours? 🤕 It's heartbreaking. We take so much for granted here, like our homes and our safety. What would we do if we had to deal with that kind of chaos? 🤯 It's not just about physical displacement, but also the emotional toll it takes on families... I wish more people could understand what it's really like to be in their shoes ❤️.

omg this is so sad 🤕 read about the Sudanese civilians who had to flee their city due to violence 😱 it's like, can't we all just get along? 🙏 i feel for them, they're literally having to leave everything behind in a matter of hours. anyone know if there's any international help being sent to aid these people? 🤔 btw u should def check out this article from the huffpost about the situation in western darfur 👉 https://www.huffpost.com/entry/darf...es-escape-violence_n_623f7e9e1d1134a7c2aae5af

man this is getting outta hand 🤯 i remember reading about western darfur being messed up for ages... it's just crazy how quickly things can spiral outta control in situations like this. these people are literally running for their lives with no idea what's gonna happen next... hope the authorities can figure out a way to get the situation under control soon 🤞

This is just so heartbreaking 🤕... I mean, can you imagine having to flee your home in the middle of the night because of fighting? It's like something out of a horror movie. The fact that people are literally grabbing whatever they can carry and running for their lives is just devastating. I keep thinking about all the stuff they're leaving behind – homes, businesses, families... it's just too much to process.

And what really gets me is that these folks have been living in this state of chaos for years, with no real end in sight 🤯. It's like they've lost hope or something. I wish we could just provide them with some kind of safety net – a place to go where they can start over without all the trauma and fear.

The image of people running wildly through the streets, screaming and shooting... it's just so frightening 😱. And now they're stuck in this limbo, not knowing what's going to happen next or when they'll be safe again. It's just so heartbreaking 🤕
