Police in Queensland, Australia have busted an international crime syndicate that allegedly stole dozens of Toyotas from Brisbane, including LandCruisers and Prados, with the intention of shipping them to the United Arab Emirates.
In a massive operation, seven men were charged with over 300 offences related to the thefts, including stealing and attempted stealing. The men, aged between 28 and 45, are set to appear in Brisbane magistrates court on January 12, 14, and 27.
The crime syndicate is believed to have flown into Brisbane in October and carried out an organised operation to steal specific Toyota models over a two-month period, resulting in the theft of 60 cars across the region. Shipping containers with whole vehicles were allegedly sent to the UAE for profit.
Police claim that the syndicate used shipping containers to send stolen vehicles to the UAE, with two LandCruisers being discovered in a wrecking yard in Brisbane's south. Over the following weeks, six more shipping containers containing more cars were located across Brisbane and Melbourne, with 15 of the allegedly stolen vehicles recovered so far.
The crime scene was declared at one location, where police found a shipping container hidden behind disassembled vehicle parts. South Brisbane district Det Insp Paul Dalton said investigators had worked around the clock for two months to identify and apprehend the alleged offenders.
"These offences are brazen and can cause significant disruption to our community's feeling of safety and ability to travel to work," he said. "This investigation was a top priority for local detectives to prevent further harm, hold the alleged offenders to account, and provide answers for victims."
