Michael Porter Jr. heeding call for more playmaking pays off in big way for Nets

Nets Coach Jordi Fernández has sparked a transformation in forward Michael Porter Jr., urging him to cut and play smart basketball rather than relying on individual flashes of brilliance. The once-named "Never Swing the Rock" moniker now seems out of place, as Porter has started to deliver sustained performances that benefit his team.

In Sunday's 129-106 thrashing of Washington, Porter showcased a new level of maturity, leading the charge with a career-high 34 points, while also dishing out seven assists. His improved playmaking skills have been a welcome addition to the Nets' offense, and Fernández is thrilled to see his player embracing the challenge.

"His plan for him to get better and show things he hasn't done before has started to pay off," said Fernández. "And it's contagious - when he plays like this, everybody benefits."

Porter credits his new approach to cutting as a deliberate decision to use his size around the rim more effectively. He notes that his time with Nikola Jokic in Denver led some to assume he only made cuts for the benefit of his teammate's vision. However, Porter has always been a cutter and likes to find easy buckets.

In recent games, Porter has found success as part of a well-oiled passing unit, with teammates like Claxton and Sharpe consistently finding him for open shots around the rim. His confidence in this new style of play is evident, and his results are starting to speak for themselves.

Claxton's impressive all-around performance on Sunday was a season-high, with 17 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. His averages are now career highs, and Fernández couldn't be prouder of his player's growth.

As the Nets continue to rack up wins, their increasing efficiency and cohesion will likely be key factors in their success this season. With Porter leading by example, it's clear that he has finally found a rhythm on the court - one that benefits not just himself but his entire team.

The Nets' recent performance highlights the growing importance of smart basketball and teamwork. With Porter embracing his role as a cutter and playmaker, it will be exciting to see how this new dynamic unfolds in the coming games.

The Brooklyn's victory on Sunday was their most points scored since January 2025, and they handed out a season-high 32 assists. Rookie point guard Ben Saraf suffered an ankle injury during Long Island's last game, leaving his status uncertain for now.

Man oh man... can't even feel good about this one 🤕. Porter Jr.'s turnaround is kinda cool, I guess 😐. It's all well and good that he's finding a new rhythm and playing smart basketball, but what about the guy who was always "Never Swing the Rock" moniker? Now he just seems like another dude trying to fit in with the team 🤷‍♂️. And honestly, it feels kinda sad that he had to go through this transformation... like, did he even really like being known for his individual flashes of brilliance or what? 🤔. Anyway, at least Claxton is killing it right now, and I'm hyped about the Nets' efficiency and cohesion 💪. But, on a more serious note, another ankle injury to worry about... this season's gonna be long if everyone stays healthy 😬.

🤩 I'm so stoked to see Michael Porter Jr. finally figuring out his game! It's like he's been on the right path all along, but just needed that extra nudge from Coach Fernández. His new approach to cutting is genius and it's amazing to see him using his size around the rim more effectively. And let's give a shoutout to Claxton, he's having an incredible season and his stats are totally on point 📈! This team's chemistry is looking stronger by the minute and I'm loving every minute of it 💥

idk why ppl still got it out 4 porter 2 b some kinda superstar his games r all about individual highlights but now he's tryna get it done 4 the team & it's actually pretty cool 2 c him play like this 🤔

man i'm loving this new direction porter is bringing to the team 🤩 he used to be all about flash but now he's really showing us what he can do on a consistent level and it's so cool to see fernández get him there too coach has been pushing him hard and it's really paying off 👏 claxton is looking fire as well and their chemistry is just getting better and better ⚡️ i'm hyped for the rest of the season, this new smart basketball vibe is exactly what the nets need 🔄

🤔 just watched the highlights of that Nets game and I'm loving the way Porter Jr is playing smart ball 📈 it's all about cutting and finding those open shots, not just throwing up crazy dunks all the time 😂 and Claxton's development is huge too, his all-around skills are making him a nightmare to match up against 👀 fernández is doing a great job as coach, making adjustments on the fly and getting his guys playing together like a well-oiled machine 💪 that 32-assist performance was insane! 🤯

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." 🌟 Dream big, I guess? Coach Fernández has been preaching patience and smart basketball, and it's paying off! Porter Jr.'s transformation is a perfect example of how hard work and dedication can lead to greatness. The Nets' recent performances are like a breath of fresh air - they're finally clicking as a team. And let's be real, when everyone benefits from the same rhythm, it's magic 🎶

🤔 The way Porter has transformed his game is super inspiring! He used to just be known for those crazy highlight-reel plays, but now he's showing us that being a team player can be just as impactful. His new approach to cutting and playmaking is a huge win for the Nets, and it's awesome to see Fernández's coaching pay off. 🌟 Claxton's growth is also super impressive - his all-around skills are making him a nightmare to match up against. The Nets' efficiency and cohesion are key to their success, and with Porter leading by example, I'm hyped to see how this new dynamic unfolds! 👏 It's cool to see the team embracing smart basketball and teamwork, too. 📈

🤩 just saw the most epic game of net ball in ages! porter is killing it right now 🚀🔥 and fernandez is the genius coach who made him see this new way to play 💡. their team is so hyped and efficient now, it's like a well-oiled machine 🎥💪. ben saraf might be out for a bit tho 😬, fingers crossed he gets back on track soon! 👍 [link to game highlights](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abc12345)

🤯 I'm loving the transformation of MJP! He's finally figured out that being a team player is way more fun than just scoring all the points 🏀💥. Fernández has been a genius coach for pushing him to adapt and it's paying off big time. The whole team is looking sharper now, like they're reading each other's minds on the court 🔍. Claxton's having an amazing season too, he's my new favorite Nets player 🤩!

I gotta say, this whole "smart basketball" thing is kinda refreshing... 🤔 But at the same time, I'm still worried about injuries and player burnout. Porter Jr. looked fire on Sunday, but what happens when he gets tired? And with Saraf gone, who's gonna take some of that pressure off him? It's all about balance, you know? We can't just keep relying on one guy to carry the team... 🤞

🤔 I'm loving the turnaround in Michael Porter Jr.'s game - he's finally showing that 'smart basketball' is more than just a nickname 🏀. His ability to make clutch plays and set up his teammates has been a game-changer for the Nets. It's awesome to see him evolving into a true leader on the court, not just relying on individual flashes of brilliance 💥. The fact that Jordi Fernández was able to adjust his coaching style to bring out Porter's best is a testament to their partnership 👍. Now, with Claxton and Sharpe finding success in feeding him open shots, it'll be fascinating to see how this new dynamic unfolds 🔁.

so i think porter jr is getting way too much hate for not being able to carry the team on his own from the start...like, jordi fernández had a plan to help him grow and it's finally paying off 🤝 and porter's confidence in his new role as a cutter and playmaker is so inspiring 👏 claxton's growth too is a testament to the team's cohesion 🤜🤛 saraf's injury might be a blessing in disguise, it'll give ben some time to rest and come back stronger 💪

omg i think porter is really stepin up his game 🤩! he used to be all about showboatin and gettin buckets, but now he's like a total team player 😂. fernández gotta be doin somethin right cuz porter's stats are lookin crazy 🔥. claxton's growth is awesome too, i mean 17 points 9 rebounds 7 assists? thats wacky 🤯. and it's not just porter or claxton, the whole team's gelling like a well oiled machine 🔄. their smart basketball approach is killin it on the court 💪. lets see how they keep this momentum goin!

🏀 The fact that Jordi Fernández is pushing Michael Porter Jr to adopt smart basketball over flashy individual plays is really interesting - it raises questions about the NBA's culture of individual greatness vs teamwork. I mean, are teams just going to be successful if they have one superstar who can carry them to wins? 🤔 Shouldn't we be seeing more emphasis on team sportsmanship and cohesion?

yooo 🤔 i'm loving the transformation we're seeing in Michael Porter Jr.! he used to be all about individual flashes of brilliance but now he's showing us his true potential as a cutter and playmaker 💪🏽. it's awesome to see Jordi Fernández pushing him to be more strategic on the court, it's really paying off for both of them and the team 📈. porter's confidence is growing and so are his stats 🚀. i'm excited to see how this new dynamic plays out in future games 🔜. maybe we'll even start calling him "the rock" back 💥!

I'm like totally stoked about MJR right now lol 😂... but at the same time, I think it's kinda weird that he's suddenly all about playing smart basketball instead of just scoring whenever 🤔... I mean, what happened to the "Never Swing the Rock" guy? Did someone mess with his head or something?

Anywayz, it's cool to see him embracing a new style and finding success as part of a cohesive unit 👍. Claxton is on fire rn too - career highs all around 🤩... but I'm still not convinced that this team is gonna be able to take down the Lakers in the playoffs 🤷‍♂️. Maybe they just have a "hot streak" or something?

🤔 I think it's awesome how Coach Fernández has been pushing Michael Porter Jr to play smarter basketball! He was really struggling earlier on, but now he's starting to shine 💡. It's great that Porter is taking feedback and making adjustments to his game - it's all about teamwork and smart plays 🔄. The fact that Claxton is killing it right now with career highs is a testament to how well the team is gelling together 👏. And let's be real, 32 assists in one game? That's just crazy good! 💥 I'm loving the vibes on this team and can't wait to see what they do next 📈
