Chicago-based Private Equity Firm Acquires Michigan's HopCat Craft Beer Bar Chain

In a move that promises to shake up the craft beer scene in the Midwest, Uncommon Equity LLC has announced its acquisition of HopCat, a popular chain of craft beer bars founded in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The deal marks a significant milestone for the company, which will see Dan Kipp, co-founder and CEO of Uncommon Equity, join HopCat's board of directors.

According to Kipp, the acquisition is seen as an opportunity to carefully grow the HopCat brand while maintaining its focus on serving great food in a friendly atmosphere. The company has 12 locations across Michigan and one in Nebraska, as well as a separate restaurant called Stella's Lounge.

Project BarFly CEO Craig Stage, who will remain involved with the company, echoed Kipp's sentiments, stating that the transition is not about changing direction but rather continuing to bring people together. "We're excited to partner with Uncommon Equity and their experienced Operating Partners to invest in the team, new locations, and innovation while preserving the local and Midwest hospitality that has always defined the brand," Stage said.

The acquisition was announced earlier this week, although details of the deal were not disclosed. HopCat's founders have built a reputation for its diverse selection of rotating craft beers on tap and menu featuring burgers and signature Cosmik Fries.

The news is likely to be music to the ears of beer enthusiasts in Michigan and beyond, as HopCat continues to push the boundaries of what a craft beer bar should be. With Uncommon Equity at the helm, there's little doubt that the brand will continue to thrive and grow under new leadership.

😊 This is super exciting news for craft beer lovers everywhere! I mean, who doesn't love a good hoppy pint on tap? 🍺 And it's great to see HopCat getting some serious backing from Uncommon Equity - they're gonna take the brand to the next level, no doubt. But you know what the best part is? The fact that Dan Kipp and Craig Stage are committed to preserving that 'local' vibe that makes HopCat so special. It's all about community and good times, right? So, bring on the new locations and innovation - I'm stoked to see where this takes us! 🚀

🍺 this acquisition is all about preserving the local vibe while bringing in some fresh expertise 🤝 dan kipp seems like a cool dude who knows how to keep the focus on serving great food & craft beers without losing sight of what made HopCat special in the first place 👌 it's not always easy to grow a brand, but if they're careful & stay true to their roots, i think this partnership could be a game changer for them 🚀

🍺🤔 so great, another big corp swooping in to save the day... or in this case, the craft beer scene in Michigan. HopCat's founders must've been like "screw it, we can't handle running our own business" 🤦‍♂️ 'cause now they're just advising from the sidelines while Uncommon Equity tries not to mess things up too badly 😬. And 12 locations? That's a whole lotta HopCat... I guess if you like burgers and beers, this is the place for you 🍔👌

omg just heard about this!!! i'm literally stoked they're takin over hopcat 🤩 cant wait to see what kind of moves uncommonequity makes tho hopefully they keep up the same vibe as before, you know? love that they got craig stage on board too, he seems like a total beer nerd 😎

🤔 u guys really need another giant corporate firm takin over a small business like hopcat? i mean dont get me wrong hopcats been doin some cool stuff with craft beer but i feel like its gonna get lost in the shuffle now 🚮 it was always about that community vibe and now its just gonna be another big company tryin to make a buck 💸

I think this acquisition is gonna be huge for HopCat! They've already got a solid spot in Michigan and Nebraska, so it'll be cool to see them expand and bring more of that awesome atmosphere to other locations 😊. The fact that Dan Kipp and Craig Stage are on board with Uncommon Equity's vision is promising, 'cause they seem like they're all about keeping the local feel and hospitality vibes alive 👍. Plus, who doesn't love a good craft beer? 🍺 I'm stoked to see what this partnership brings!

omg this is awesome news for beer lovers in michigan 🍺🎉 i've been to hopcat a few times and their selection of beers is always on point!! it's cool to see a local company like them get some major backing to help take the brand to the next level 💸👏 hope they keep up the good work with those cosmik fries too 🤤

Idk about this acquisition, feels like just another big corp trying to cash in on a trend. HopCat was all about being chill and serving decent grub, not some fancy-schmancy craft beer joint. And now they're gonna start churning out more locations and innovation? I'm worried it'll lose that laid-back vibe that made 'em popular in the first place 🤔

I mean, don't get me wrong, Uncommon Equity seems like a solid company and all, but they gotta keep HopCat's values intact. Can't have them start serving mass-produced beers just because it's trendy 😒

this acquisition is good news for michigan & craft beer lovers 🍺👍, but we need to fact check if hopcat is really a chain with 13 locations, not just 12... might wanna double check that 🤔. anyway, who knows what's in store for the brand under new leadership 👀, hopefully it'll stay true to its roots & keep serving those amazing beers 🍻

🍺 Just think about it, some big private equity firm comes in and buys a small chain of craft beer bars... you'd think they'd just slap on a corporate veneer and cash out, but HopCat's founders actually seem like good eggs. They're not trying to change the vibe or water down their beers, just partner up with someone who can help them grow and improve. That's kinda refreshing, ya know? 😊

🍺💸 so great to hear that some big bucks have come in to save hopcat from becoming just another chain bar... i mean who needs community and local vibes when you can have a gazillion beers on tap 🤯? dan kipp's vision for "careful growth" is code for "we're gonna mess with the formula, but we'll still make sure it tastes like home". good luck with that 😂

awww man, i'm so stoked for all the hopcat fans out there!!! 🍺🎉 this acquisition is like a dream come true for craft beer lovers everywhere... dan kipp and craig stage seem like total cool cats who want to keep the vibe of hopcat alive and kicking. can't wait to see what new & exciting things they have in store for us! 🤩 maybe we'll even get some new locations? fingers crossed 😊

awww man i'm so happy for hopcat!!! 🍺💕 i know how much love and care dan kipp & craig stage put into buildin those beer bars, and now they get to have a partner who's gonna help take it to the next level 😊. i'm thinkin the best part is that they're still gonna keep doin what they love - servin up amazing food & drinks in a super friendly atmosphere 🍴👍. can't wait to see what new beers and menu items come out 🤔

oh man, craft beer fans are gonna freak out over this! 🍺🎉 hopcat has been a michigan staple for years and now they're getting the resources to take it to the next level with uncommon equity's backing. i'm all for preserving that local vibe and innovative spirit - dan kipp seems like he knows what he's doing. can't wait to see where this partnership takes them, especially with new locations on the horizon 📍💸

😊 I'm super stoked about this acquisition, dude! I mean, who wouldn't want to grab a cold one from HopCat? They've always been on point with their craft beer selection and cozy atmosphere. It's awesome that they're staying true to their roots while still growing and innovating 🤩. I can already imagine some new menu items and craft beers popping up on the scene. Plus, Uncommon Equity's involvement is a huge plus, they seem like pros when it comes to running bars. Fingers crossed this means more HopCat locations will pop up in other cities! 🍺👍

😊 just saw this thread from last week and I gotta say, I'm surprised by this acquisition... like, how did it not get more attention? HopCat is a total game changer for craft beer in MI and now it's being taken over by a private equity firm? idk what to think about this. on one hand, having Uncommon Equity on board might bring some fresh capital and expertise to the table. on the other hand, I'm worried they'll try to scale things too fast and lose that unique vibe that makes HopCat so special 💔

🤔 so great that some rich dude from Chicago gets to own a bunch of bars in Michigan? sounds like another good way for them to make a killing off of craft beer 🤑. i mean, who needs local ownership or community involvement when you can have a fancy CEO with a nice haircut? 😒 and now they'll just "partner" with the founders... yeah right, that's code for "we're gonna make changes to suit our interests". still, at least the beer will be okay, i guess 🍺

[Image of a person holding up a glass of beer with a big smile 🍺😊]

when u find out ur favorite brewery got acquired by a private equity firm but the owners still get to keep running it as long as they don't change the name from hopcat to... i dunno, "HopThatOtherThing"
