Local Mom Embroiled in $61K Scheme to Defraud Philly Schools
Laurel Schullere, a mother of two children enrolled in Philadelphia schools, has been charged with stealing over $61,000 from the School District, meant for her kids' therapeutic care. The Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office alleges that Schullere misrepresented the services provided by her own business, Missing Pieces, to the district.
Over a period of nine years, the school district paid out more than $61,000 to Schullere, who received these funds but failed to redirect them to Missing Pieces. Instead, investigators found that the company had two addresses listed โ one at an abandoned property and another at a church โ raising suspicions about its legitimacy.
Schullere allegedly exploited the trust placed in her by the district, claiming that Missing Pieces provided essential care for her children. However, authorities have now revealed no evidence of the company's operational existence or any actual provision of services to the children.
Laurel Schullere turned herself in to authorities on Wednesday, facing charges of theft by deception and other related crimes. Attorney General Dave Sunday condemned the mother's actions, stating that she "misled the district and pocketed taxpayer dollars" meant for her children's well-being.
