NY advocates eye a chance to limit police cooperation with ICE statewide

New York lawmakers are seizing on the recent federal immigration agent killing in Minneapolis to push for a bill that would restrict state and local police from cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The proposed legislation, known as the New York for All Act, would block state and local officers from enforcing federal immigration laws and sharing sensitive information with ICE unless there is a judicial warrant. It also ensures that people in custody are informed of their legal rights before being interviewed by immigration agents.

The push comes after a year of heightened Trump administration deportations, which have sparked nationwide protests and demonstrations. New York City already has some of the country's strongest sanctuary laws, but advocates say more needs to be done to protect the rights of immigrants living in the state.

Governor Kathy Hochul is seen as a key player in this effort. While she has walked a fine line on immigration issues, recent events have caused her to publicly denounce ICE's conduct and propose policy changes that would allow New Yorkers to seek recourse if they are injured or their property is damaged by ICE.

Lawmakers say the bill has gained new momentum amid shifting public opinion. A Siena Research poll found that 65% of respondents believe deploying federal immigration officials to round up illegal immigrants had gone too far, while only 54% support Trump's deportation efforts. Democratic lawmakers and advocacy groups are also pushing for additional bills, including guarantees of legal counsel for immigrants facing deportation.

The fate of the bill remains uncertain, with Speaker Carl Heastie saying that he hasn't discussed it with his conference yet but would in the near future. Republicans have strongly opposed any effort to limit local law enforcement's cooperation with ICE, and Assemblymember Jarett Gandolfo has proposed a bill to overrule certain sanctuary policies.

Supporters of the New York for All Act are confident they can get Governor Hochul on board, saying that this is not a time to nitpick but to take bold action to protect immigrant communities.

I'm low-key hyped about this ๐Ÿคฉ! Like, the fact that NYC already has some strong sanctuary laws and now we're talking about expanding those protections even more? ๐Ÿ™Œ It's about time, right? I mean, who doesn't want to make sure law enforcement is focusing on actual crimes rather than chasing down immigrants? ๐Ÿ˜‚ And can you blame people for being upset after what happened in Minneapolis? That was straight outta a horror movie. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ But for real, this bill would be a huge step forward for immigrant rights. It's like, we need to take care of our own people first, you know? ๐Ÿ’• The fact that Governor Hochul is on board and the momentum is building... yeah, I'm feeling it! ๐ŸŽ‰ Let's make this happen! ๐Ÿ‘

I think it's super reasonable to want state and local police to be able to do their jobs without having to worry about getting in trouble for helping out the feds on immigration stuff ๐Ÿค”. I mean, we already have sanctuary laws in place in NYC, but more isn't always better, you know? We need to find a balance between keeping our communities safe and being kind to people who are just trying to live their lives here ๐Ÿ’•. And honestly, if Governor Hochul is willing to publicly denounce ICE's behavior, I'm all for her taking bold action on this bill ๐Ÿ™Œ!

I'm getting a bad vibe from this whole thing ๐Ÿ˜’. I mean, politicians trying to capitalize on a tragic event by pushing their own agendas? It just feels like they're using fear and anxiety for their own gain ๐Ÿค‘. And what's with the "New York for All Act" name? Sounds like some kinda PR stunt ๐ŸŽฌ. I'm not saying I don't get why people are upset about ICE, but this feels like a classic case of bandwagon jumping ๐Ÿš‚.

And let's be real, sanctuary laws aren't perfect either. What if these police officers are still gonna do what they wanna do regardless of the law? ๐Ÿ˜’ It's just another layer of bureaucracy that might not even make a difference in the end. I'm all for supporting immigrants, but we need to tackle this issue with more than just a slap on the wrist ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I'm also skeptical about Governor Hochul's motives. Is she really pushing for these reforms because she cares, or is it just good politics? ๐Ÿค” We'll see how this all plays out, but I'm keeping my skepticism in check...for now ๐Ÿ‘€

๐Ÿค” so like, i get why new york lawmakers wanna do something about this federal immigration agent killing... it's super scary and unfair for immigrants already living here ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ... but at the same time, isn't it kinda hard to just block all cooperation with ICE? like, what if some officer sees something that should be reported, but can't because of some new law ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ?

and i'm also curious about governor hochul's role in this whole thing... is she really on board with the New York for All Act, or is she just trying to balance things out? and what about those sanctuary laws that NYC already has - do they need to be strengthened or are we just being too cautious? ๐Ÿค”

i think it's interesting that there's a big split between public opinion and lawmakers' views on this... like, most people think deploying federal immigration officials was way too much, but lawmakers still wanna limit local law enforcement's cooperation with ICE ๐Ÿ“Š... anyway, it'll be nice to see what happens next! ๐Ÿ’ฌ

๐Ÿค” I mean, it's about time we do something to help out those immigrants living in NYC. It feels like the feds have been really harsh lately with all these deportations... ๐Ÿšซ 65% of people think deploying federal immigration officials was too much, that's wild! ๐Ÿ’ฅ And yeah, it's not just about sanctuary laws, it's about making sure everyone knows their rights and stuff. I feel bad for those who get hurt or have their property damaged by ICE, they deserve some help. ๐Ÿค•

OMG, I'm so down for this ๐Ÿคฉ! Finally, some progress being made on protecting our immigrant friends ๐Ÿค—. It's crazy how the recent ICE agent killing has brought everyone together - even Republicans are starting to see sense ๐Ÿ˜Š. Governor Hochul is a total boss for speaking up and proposing changes ๐Ÿ’ช. And can we talk about how New York City already has some of the strongest sanctuary laws? Like, they're setting the bar high ๐Ÿ†! The fact that 65% of people believe deploying federal immigration officials went too far is like, super empowering โšก๏ธ. Let's keep pushing for these bills and make sure everyone knows their rights ๐Ÿ’•. This is a great time to be an optimist ๐Ÿ˜Š!

๐Ÿšจ I'm so hyped about this! We need more states like NY taking a stand against ICE's brutal methods. The fact that 65% of ppl think deploying federal immigration officials was way too far is a major wake-up call ๐Ÿšจ. It's time for our leaders to take bold action and prioritize the rights of immigrants living in our state. I'm all for Governor Hochul using her platform to advocate for policy changes that support immigrant communities. We can't just talk about it, we need to do something tangible ๐Ÿ’ช. And let's be real, if we don't have a bill like the NY for All Act, our state will remain a haven for ICE's abusive practices ๐Ÿšซ. It's time to take a stand and protect our immigrant neighbors! ๐Ÿ‘

idk why ppl have 2 b so divided about immigration ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ. like, cant we just try 2 find a middle ground here? its not rocket science. ppl r scared of crime & want justice, but at the same time, theres these ppl who need help & are livin in fear of deportation ๐Ÿšซ. whats wrong w/ havin open dialogue & listening 2 each other's concerns? we need 2 stop pitting ppl against each other & start focusing on solutions ๐Ÿ’ก. governor hochul seems like shes tryna do the right thing, but theres still a lot of pushback from republicans ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. cant we just agree that immigrants deserve dignity & respect? ๐Ÿ™

omg i just thought about this and idk why but i started wondering if we're living in a movie or something where cops are like robots enforcing laws? ๐Ÿค–๐Ÿ’ฅ anyway what's the point of having cops if they can't even trust each other? and what's with all these laws trying to protect immigrants? aren't they, like, people too? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ i feel like we're always hearing about someone getting deported or arrested for something stupid but no one talks about what happens after that... do they just disappear into thin air? ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ

Ugh I'm so done with the government not doing enough already ๐Ÿ™„. Can't we just pass a law that protects immigrants without all the drama and backroom deals? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ The fact that we need a bill like this because Trump's deportation efforts have been SO out of hand is just a reflection of how messed up our country has become ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, can't we just treat people with basic human rights and dignity? ๐Ÿ™ It's not that hard. And now they're trying to override sanctuary laws in NY - what's next, taking away people's right to live without fear of deportation? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ We need to stand together and demand action from our leaders, not just vague promises and empty words ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ.

๐Ÿค” I think its crazy how politics can be so heated right now. The whole ICE thing is super complex and everyone has their own opinion. As someone who's seen many protests around here, I've got friends whose families are from countries that have been targeted by Trumps deportation policies...its heartbreaking to see them go through this. The New York for All Act makes sense tho - its not like they're trying to let all criminals just roam free lol. Imo, its about finding a balance between keeping our communities safe and respecting people's rights

I'm still not convinced about these new "sanctuary laws" ๐Ÿค”... I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm all for protecting our local communities, but what's the ultimate goal here? Are we just kicking ICE out of our state only to have them magically appear somewhere else? ๐Ÿ˜’ And what about the potential consequences on national security? I know some folks say we need more control over immigration, but isn't that a federal issue? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ It seems like we're just patching holes in a broken system instead of tackling the root problem. Plus, I'm not sure how effective these laws really are - we've seen plenty of instances where "sanctuary cities" still get raided by ICE... it's all about politics, right? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿค” I think it's high time we show some real support for our immigrant neighbors here in NY. The whole thing with ICE has got to stop, ya know? People are already super scared and just wanna live their lives without bein worried about gettin pinched by the feds all the time. We need some serious reform around here, and this bill's a good start. I'm not sure what the holdup is, but if we can get Hochul on board, we'll be golden ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’ช

I'm so excited about this development ๐Ÿคฉ! I mean, it's amazing to see lawmakers taking action to protect the rights of immigrants living in New York state ๐Ÿ™Œ. It's like, finally, we're recognizing that our neighbors are human beings too, with families and dreams just like us ๐Ÿ’•.

I love how Governor Hochul is leading the charge on this one ๐Ÿ—ฝ๏ธ. She's showing that she cares about the well-being of all New Yorkers, not just those who are born here ๐Ÿ‘ถ. And I'm so glad to see the public opinion shifting towards supporting immigrant rights ๐Ÿ“ˆ. It's like, we're finally having a conversation about what it means to be an American ๐Ÿค.

Of course, there might be some bumps along the way ๐Ÿšง, but I'm confident that with everyone working together, this bill can make a real difference in people's lives ๐Ÿ’ซ. Let's keep those fingers crossed for a yes vote ๐Ÿ˜Š!

๐Ÿค You know what's really interesting about all this? It's how people change their minds when faced with reality ๐Ÿ’ก. Like, a year ago, it was all about enforcing those deportation orders and making life tough for immigrants, but now...now we're seeing the cracks in that system ๐ŸŒŠ. People are starting to realize that sometimes, the things we think we know can be wrong ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. It's like, what if we're not actually protecting our communities by doing this? What if we're just pushing people further into the shadows? ๐Ÿ˜” The thing is, it's all about perspective ๐ŸŒ. We gotta keep having those tough conversations and listening to each other's stories ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ. That's how we grow as a society, you know?

I don't usually comment but I think it's crazy how some states in the US are trying to pass laws that would limit their police departments from working with ICE ๐Ÿ˜ฎ. Like, I get it, there was this one incident where an immigration agent got killed in Minneapolis and stuff, but restricting state and local police from cooperating with federal agencies seems like a really broad move ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ.

I don't think it's about protecting immigrants' rights or whatever, it's more like politicians are trying to play it safe because the public is getting more aware of how ICE has been treating people ๐Ÿ‘€. I mean, 65% of people believe that deploying federal immigration officials was way too far... but at the same time, only 54% support Trump's deportation efforts ๐Ÿค”.

I think what they should do instead of trying to limit police cooperation is actually focus on making sure that immigrant communities feel safe and protected in their own state ๐ŸŒŽ. Like, Governor Hochul is doing a good job by publicly denouncing ICE's conduct and proposing policy changes that would allow New Yorkers to seek recourse if they're injured or their property gets damaged by ICE ๐Ÿ™.

It's all about finding a balance between keeping people safe and respecting human rights, you know? ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿšจ You gotta love how the people in NYC are stepping up to defend their residents! The idea of restricting state and local police from cooperating with ICE is totally reasonable ๐Ÿค. It's been crazy what's happened under the Trump admin, and it's about time some changes were made ๐Ÿ’ช. Governor Hochul seems like a solid player in this game โ€“ she's been pretty vocal about her disapproval of ICE's actions ๐Ÿ”ฅ. And I'm loving that advocates are pushing for more bills to protect immigrants' rights ๐Ÿ“ข. It's not going to be easy, but if the people come out strong enough, maybe we'll see some real change soon ๐Ÿ’ซ!

๐Ÿค” The whole thing just feels like another example of politicians trying to one-up each other. Like, what's the real goal here? Is it really about protecting immigrants or is it about scoring some points with the liberal base? ๐Ÿค‘ I'm all for giving people their rights, but let's not get too carried away with the rhetoric. What's next, restricting police from cooperating with the FBI on terrorism cases just to appease some vocal group? The sanctuaries are one thing, but we can't just keep tweaking the system until it's perfect. We need to have a real discussion about how we're gonna balance security and compassion... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿค I'm all about giving those who are vulnerable (especially immigrants) a helping hand! The fact that 65% of people think deploying federal immigration officials was too much is like, totally on point ๐Ÿ™Œ. We gotta stand with the people who are being unfairly targeted and make sure their rights are protected ๐Ÿ’ช. Governor Hochul's been doing some cool things lately, like publicly denouncing ICE's conduct ๐Ÿšซ, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she'll sign this bill into law ๐Ÿ’ฏ! It's time for us to take bold action and protect our immigrant communities ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ‘
