OpenAI is piloting group conversations in ChatGPT

OpenAI is taking its popular conversational AI tool ChatGPT to the next level with a new group chat feature, where ChatGPT itself becomes one of the participants in a conversation. This pilot program is currently being tested in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan, allowing users to engage in collaborative discussions with friends, family, classmates, or colleagues.

The group chat functionality allows users to start a new conversation by tapping on the people icon at the top right corner of the screen. ChatGPT will create a new conversation without your chat history if you start from an existing chat. Users can then add participants and share a link with up to 20 people, who must set up their profile before joining the group.

Once inside, participants can customize their experience by muting or removing other users from the conversation. However, the group creator has full control over who can join and leave the chat. The platform also ensures that sensitive content is limited for minors under the age of 18.

When it comes to responses, group chats are powered by GPT-5.1 Auto, which uses advanced algorithms to choose the most suitable response based on the prompt. OpenAI claims to have trained the AI to navigate complex conversations, allowing it to know when to remain silent and when to chime in. Users can also summon ChatGPT by mentioning its name, but participants are free to control the conversation flow.

The company is currently collecting feedback from early users to refine the feature before rolling it out widely.

I'm low-key obsessed with this new group chat thing! Can you imagine having a convo with your fave celeb (like maybe Leonardo DiCaprio 🀩) or a classmate and they're actually responding? The idea of having an AI like ChatGPT as part of the conversation is kinda mind-blowing. I mean, think about it - it can pick up on tone and context so much better than humans could! The fact that you can customize your experience and have full control over who joins or leaves is also a major plus.

I'm curious to know how this will change the way we communicate online. Will it make us more active listeners, or just distract us even more? Can't wait to see how it all plays out! πŸ€”

πŸ€” This new group chat feature for ChatGPT is like a microcosm of our society - some people will love the autonomy to have conversations with minimal human intervention, while others will be worried about losing their edge in discussions πŸ“š Meanwhile, governments around the world are trying to regulate AI usage and control content. The fact that OpenAI is collecting feedback from users is interesting... it's like we're having a national conversation πŸ—£οΈ Can we trust AI tools with our personal conversations? Should there be age restrictions on using such platforms? It's time for us to think critically about the impact of technology on our social interactions πŸ’»

OMG, this new group chat feature on ChatGPT is going to change the game πŸš€πŸ’¬! I'm low-key excited to try it out with my squad πŸ’•. Having a virtual AI assistant in our convo will be SO cool 😎. No more tedious tasks or waiting for others to respond, we can just chill and have a real-time discussion πŸ’». I love that the creators are prioritizing sensitive content restriction for minors πŸ‘ΆπŸΌπŸ€. The fact that ChatGPT can adjust its responses based on prompts is pure genius πŸ§ πŸ’‘. Can't wait for this feature to drop and get my hands dirty πŸ’ͺ!

I'm so not down with this new group chat feature πŸ™„. I mean, think about it - our AI tool becomes a participant in a convo and can kinda hijack the discussion? It's just too much control for one AI, if you ask me πŸ˜’. And what happens when the creator of the chat decides to kick some users out? That's just gonna lead to drama 🀯. Not to mention the GPT-5.1 Auto thingy - how are we supposed to know which response is coming from human and which one's from the AI? It's all a bit too much for me πŸ˜…. I'm good with my chat tool, but this new feature just feels like an overcomplicated mess πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ.

Ugh, I mean I'm excited about this group chat thingy with ChatGPT and all, πŸ€” but have you seen how many ads they've got on the app now? It's like, can't we just have a plain old conversation without being bombarded with "try our new premium feature" nonsense? πŸ’Έ

And don't even get me started on how slow it is to set up a group chat. I mean, 20 people to invite? Are they expecting us all to be friends already or something? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ And what's with the profile thingy? Can't we just talk without having to fill out our life stories?

I'm glad they're testing it in different countries though, that's a good idea. But seriously, can we just have a private conversation without being spied on by the company all the time? 🀫 I mean, I know it's AI and all but still, some things are better left unsaid... or at least with fewer bots listening in πŸ‘€

omg i think this new group chat feature with ChatGPT is a total game changer πŸ€―πŸ’¬! just imagine being able to have real-time discussions with friends or family and having an AI like ChatGPT as a participant, it's like having another brain in the conversation πŸ’‘πŸ‘₯! but at the same time, i'm also concerned about how much control ChatGPT will really have over the conversation - will we be seeing more echo chambers or diverse perspectives? πŸ€”πŸ’ and what about when things get heated or emotional? will ChatGPT know when to back off? βš οΈπŸ‘€

omg i cant even try this new group chat thingy yet πŸ€―πŸ“± i mean im curious about how itll work with ChatGPT as a participant tho... will it get all chatty and dominate the conversation or can we actually have meaningful group chats? πŸ€” gotta wait for some feedback from other users before i jump in...

I'm kinda worried about this new group chat feature... I mean, think about it - we're already living in a world where AI's getting smarter and more integrated into our daily lives πŸ€– And now we've got a conversational AI tool that can have its own opinions and 'participate' in discussions with us? It sounds like a recipe for disaster 😬 What if ChatGPT starts to develop its own agendas or biases? I know it's probably just gonna be a human doing the work behind the scenes, but still... what if we start to lose touch with our own thoughts and feelings? πŸ’

Just imagine having a super smart AI assistant that's like a 3rd wheel at a party 🀝! Like, think about it, you're all chatting with friends and then suddenly ChatGPT chimes in with an answer that blows everyone else out of the water... but also kinda takes over the conversation πŸ˜‚. I'm not sure if I love or hate this new feature yet, but one thing's for sure - it's gonna be super interesting to see how people use it! πŸ‘€

This group chat thingy sounds like a game changer 🀯! I mean, think about it, an AI that can have real conversations with humans... it's like we're getting close to having our own personal robot friends πŸ’». But for real though, this raises some interesting questions about how we interact with each other and with technology. Like, what if the AI is better at keeping a conversation going than we are? πŸ€” And what does that say about us as humans?

I'm also a bit concerned about the kids using this thing... like, it's not exactly designed to keep sensitive content from minors πŸ”’. I guess that's just part of growing up in the digital age, right? Anyway, can't wait to see how this whole thing plays out! 🀞

I'm both hyped and skeptical about this new group chat feature πŸ€”. On one hand, having a conversational AI like ChatGPT in the mix can lead to some wild and interesting conversations πŸ’‘. It's like having a super smart friend who knows everything (or so it claims πŸ˜‰). But on the other hand, I worry about the potential for AI-driven echo chambers or even harassment 🚫. How will we know when someone is just trolling or when they're genuinely trying to have a discussion? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Also, what's to stop someone from using this feature to manipulate others into having a certain conversation? πŸ€‘ I'm all for innovation and progress, but let's not forget about the potential risks and downsides 🚨. Can't wait to see how it plays out in real life though πŸ‘€

πŸ€” just thought about this new group chat thingy on ChatGPT... i mean its pretty cool idea, lets you have like super deep conversations with people but also has some good limitations for minors and stuff... idk if its gonna be a game changer or whatever but at least its different from regular group chats πŸ“±πŸ’¬

πŸ€– I'm low-key hyped about this new group chat feature for ChatGPT πŸ“±πŸ’¬. Imagine being able to have a convo with your friends, classmates, or colleagues and having the AI assist you in keeping track of thoughts and ideas πŸ’‘. It's crazy how far OpenAI has taken it - even having full control over who joins/leaves the chat is pretty cool πŸ‘. I'm also glad they're being mindful about sensitive content for minors πŸ™. Can't wait to give this a try when it's out! πŸŽ‰

I'm low-key hyped about this new group chat feature for ChatGPT πŸ€―πŸ“±! Imagine being able to have a convo with your squad, and ChatGPT can actually keep up with you πŸ˜‚. It's like having a super smart friend who's always down to discuss the latest Marvel movie or what's trending on TikTok πŸ’₯. I'm also loving that it's got some built-in safety features, like limiting sensitive content for minors πŸ‘. The only thing I'm worried about is how much of our personal space will ChatGPT respect πŸ€”. But overall, this sounds like a game-changer for online communities and socializing. Fingers crossed they iron out any kinks before it launches widely πŸ’ͺ

idk why openai needs a group chat feature lol... like what's next? A social media platform for AI chatbots 🀣 just think about it, you gotta mute chatgpt sometimes, like when its responses get too sassy or something πŸ˜‚ and what's up with the 20 person limit? cant we just have infinite conversations now πŸ’ and what about the safety aspect? i mean its cool that openai is checking for minors content but what if some crazy person tries to join a group chat πŸ€– anyway, sounds like fun!

Ugh, think OpenAI is getting a bit too big for itself with this new group chat thingy 🀯. I mean, what's next? AI overlords controlling our social lives? On a more serious note, I'm not convinced that having ChatGPT in the conversation is always a good idea. It's like they're trying to make us all dependent on the AI for every little thing... "Hey, let me just ask ChatGPT what you think about this..." No thanks! Can't we have some human interaction for once? πŸ€”

I'm low-key obsessed with this new group chat feature on ChatGPT!!! 🀩 It's gonna be game-changing for remote teams and study groups, you know? Just imagine being able to have a convo with your friends or classmates without having to constantly refresh the page... it's like, totally convenient! 😎 And I love how OpenAI is taking care of sensitive content, that's a major plus. My only suggestion would be to add more features for users to customize their experience, like maybe a "do not disturb" mode? πŸ’»
