Orphans review – oddball hostage power play is a peculiar gem

Philadelphia Orphans presents an unsettling picture of a twisted hostage situation where an outsider seizes control of a family drama in this thought-provoking theatrical revival. Two oddball brothers, Phillip and Treat, are bound together by their vulnerable and volatile relationship, while also harboring darker impulses.

When Harold, a mysterious figure with a troubled past, appears at the doorstep, the dynamics within the household shift dramatically. Initially dressed as a victim, he soon asserts his dominance, manipulating both brothers to serve his interests. As the situation unfolds, it becomes clear that Harold's presence is not merely coincidental, but rather a calculated move to exploit the vulnerability of those around him.

The playwright's preoccupation with orphans is palpable, echoing Harold's own traumatic experiences in an orphanage. The parallels between their past traumas are striking, and the brothers' upbringing seems to have contributed to their current state of emotional instability.

The performances by Forbes Masson, Chris Walley, and Fred Woodley Evans are undeniably captivating, imbuing the characters with depth and nuance despite the bizarre circumstances. As Treat's character is pushed towards a life of crime, Phillip's vulnerability becomes increasingly evident, highlighting the destructive power of manipulation.

However, the play stumbles in its execution, struggling to balance tension and symbolism with an overly complex setup that fails to provide sufficient closure on several fronts. The author's handling of bigotry also raises questions without providing satisfactory answers, leaving some viewers feeling frustrated by the lack of resolution.

Despite these limitations, Philadelphia Orphans remains a compelling and unsettling drama that masterfully explores the darker corners of human nature. The talented cast brings this peculiar gem of a revival to life, drawing audiences into their intense power play, vulnerability, and simmering anger.

Ugh, the state of online forums is giving me anxiety today 🤯. Anyway, back to "Philadelphia Orphans". I'm still trying to wrap my head around how the playwright handled that ending... it felt like a cop-out, you know? Like, I get that complexity and subtlety are important, but not when it comes at the cost of clear resolution 😒.

And don't even get me started on the casting choices. Forbes Masson's performance was solid, no doubt about it 🙌, but some of his scenes felt like they were just there to pad out the runtime. I mean, Chris Walley's character was basically a caricature - I couldn't help but feel like he was just there for dramatic contrast 🤔.

But yeah, despite all my gripes, I'll be honest, it was pretty captivating 🎭. The cast did an amazing job of bringing those characters to life, even if they didn't quite live up to their full potential 💪. Still, 4/5 stars from me... with caveats 🤷‍♂️.

Omg OMG OMG I am literally SHAKEN by this theatrical revival!!! 🤯 Philadelphia Orphans is like so deep and messed up in the best possible way... Harold's character is literally SO complex and unsettling 😱 I mean I'm not surprised he's a manipulative psychopath, but still. The way the playwright explores the trauma of being an orphan is just wow. And the cast? FORBES MASSON IS A GENIUS 🤩 his portrayal of Phillip is so nuanced and heartbreaking. Can't wait to see this play live!!! 💥

OMG u guyz!!!! 🤯 i just watched philadelphia orphans & i'm STILL SHAKEN!!! 😱 the way harold manipulates those bros is SO INSANE, like he's playing them like a fiddle 💁‍♂️! and i love how it explores that trauma from his past - so deep 💔. but omg the cast tho!!! 🤩 forbes masson, chris walley & fred woodley evans are absolute PERFECTIONISTS 🙌! the drama is SO UNSETTLING 😳, but in a good way...? i need to rewatch it like 3 times already 📺👀. can't wait to see what they do next!!! 💥

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole "Netflix" thing 📺... I mean, what's the point of having 4K if you're just gonna stream it on your phone? Anyway, back to Philly Orphans - I gotta say, it's like a weird cousin at the family reunion. You know, one that's a little too dark and twisted for comfort 😳. The cast is awesome, but man, the plot's like trying to solve a puzzle blindfolded while someone's stabbing you in the back 🤯... it just doesn't add up. And don't even get me started on those creepy orphans - they're giving me major "The Conjuring" vibes 👻. All in all, it's like they took some messed-up family drama and added a dash of "I'm-a-serial-killer-now", but still, the actors are so talented that you can't help but be drawn into this dark little world 🎭... I just wish it had a better ending 😔.

I mean, I just watched this play "Philadelphia Orphans" with my mates 🤔🎭 and it was like something outta a thriller movie, right? The main guy Harold, he's like this psycho who shows up at the doorstep and just takes control of everything. It's like he's manipulating those brothers like puppets on strings! 🕸️

I gotta say, the performances by Forbes Masson, Chris Walley, and Fred Woodley Evans were on point, mate 😎. They brought these characters to life in such a way that you couldn't help but feel for 'em, even when they're doing some pretty messed up stuff.

But, I mean, there were some parts where it felt like the play was all over the place, you know? Like, it's trying to be this deep exploration of human nature and stuff, but then it just kinda...falters 🤷‍♂️. And don't even get me started on that part with bigotry...it's like, I get what they're trying to say, but it feels like they're just leaving us hanging without giving us any real answers 🤔.

Still, though, the play was pretty compelling and all, especially when it got to those intense power struggles between Harold and the brothers 🤺. And that cast? Forget about it, mate! They were phenomenal 💥. So yeah, I'd def recommend "Philadelphia Orphans" to anyone who's down for a wild ride 🎢

just watched philadelphia orphans at the theatre 🤯 it's like they took all my worst childhood fears and mashed them together into one super disturbing drama lol idk how much i liked it though, some parts felt so tense and uncomfortable but also kinda mesmerizing? cast is fire tho, especially treat he's like a dark angel or something 😏

🤔 this play is wild 🎭 i love how it takes those dark family dynamics and twists them into something even more sinister with harold's character being like a master manipulator 😳 forbes masson and chris walley are absolute fire 🔥 their characters feel so real and flawed, it's like you're watching your own family drama unfold on stage 📺 but yeah the pacing could be better and some of the themes get glossed over 🤷‍♀️ still can't recommend this enough 👍
