Police block Ukip march through Tower Hamlets over violence fears

Scotland Yard has imposed conditions on a far-right Ukip march in Tower Hamlets, east London, citing concerns about serious violence from both local residents and police officers. The decision comes amid growing tensions between the community and extremist groups, with a history of racist attacks and counter-resistance.

The Met's deputy assistant commissioner, James Harman, said that while he understood some criticism, the force must prioritize community safety. "It would be reckless to allow an event to go ahead when we understand there's a risk of serious violence to members of the community and to our officers," Harman explained. The main concern is the potential reaction from local residents, who have expressed fears about Ukip's mass deportations march.

Police have deemed alternative routes feasible, but still decided not to allow the protest in Tower Hamlets. If anyone ignores the order and participates in the march, they will be arrested. This decision echoes a similar move made by the police in October, when they also blocked a planned parade through the area.

The Met's experience with protests has intensified over the past two years, with 884 events requiring policing at a cost of ยฃ76m. Harman attributed this surge to increasingly complex and frequent demonstrations across various causes, including pro-Palestinian marches and anti-regime protests in Iran. The decision highlights the evolving landscape of extremism and community relations in Britain's cities.

The decision has sparked debate about police tactics and the limits of freedom of speech. While some have welcomed the move as a necessary measure to protect public safety, others argue that it amounts to censorship and overreach by authorities.

I don't think this is the right way forward ๐Ÿค”... I mean, what's next? Police telling us what we can and can't say at protests? It seems like they're trying to control every aspect of our lives, even when it comes to free speech. And what's with all these "community safety" concerns? Can't people just express themselves without being policed? I'm not saying Ukip doesn't have a history of racist stuff, but is this really the answer? Taking away their right to march just because some people are scared. It feels like we're living in a police state now ๐Ÿš”๐Ÿ’ฅ

I mean come on... ๐Ÿ™„ The Met is trying to keep people safe, but honestly, this decision feels like a total overreaction. I get where they're coming from, but can't they just anticipate the situation better? Like, if there's gonna be a problem with Ukip marchers, maybe they should've planned for that in advance instead of cancelling it at the last minute. And what's with all these alternative routes? It feels like they're just trying to placate everyone without actually doing anything meaningful.

I'm not saying extremists shouldn't face consequences, but can't we find a better way to handle this than shutting down an entire protest? The cost of policing is already ยฃ76m, that's a pretty penny. And what about the freedom of speech aspect? I know some people might get upset by Ukip's messages, but it's not like they're advocating for actual violence or hate crimes.

It's just another example of how things are getting more complicated in this country. Can't we all just have a calm conversation without someone getting arrested? ๐Ÿ˜’

๐Ÿค” u guys know whats crazy? they cant even have a peaceful protest in tower hamlets without it turning into a whole mess... like what is the point of having a free speech if ur gonna get arrested for expressin ur opinion?! ๐Ÿšซ i mean dont get me wrong, community safety is everything, but can we just have some more nuanced discussion about this? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ its like police are caught in this trap where they gotta balance between protecting the public and allowing people to express themselves... meanwhile, ukip's just gonna keep stirrin up trouble anyway ๐Ÿ˜’

๐Ÿšจ I'm really worried about this latest development in Tower Hamlets... It's not just about allowing a far-right march to happen, it's about the potential for serious harm to innocent people ๐Ÿค•. The police are right to prioritize community safety, especially when there's such a history of racist attacks and counter-resistance in the area ๐ŸŒŽ.

It's also interesting to see how this decision reflects the growing complexities of protests and demonstrations in Britain ๐Ÿ“ˆ. With all these different causes and ideologies coming together, it can be really challenging for authorities to navigate the fine line between free speech and public safety ๐Ÿ”’.

But what really gets me is that some people are already criticizing the police for not being tough enough on extremism ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. It's like they're saying that if we just cracked down harder on protesters, everyone would be safer ๐Ÿšซ. But what about protecting the rights of those who want to express themselves peacefully? Don't we need a balance between security and freedom? ๐Ÿค”

The Met has been dealing with an incredible number of protests over the past two years (884 events in one year alone!), so it's no wonder they're feeling overwhelmed ๐Ÿ“Š. But maybe this is exactly what they need โ€“ a bit more reflection on their tactics and how they can better serve both communities ๐Ÿค.

omg i feel so bad for those ppl living in tower hamlets they're always getting caught up in these toxic situations ๐Ÿค• like what if the police cant control the violence anymore? its hard enough for them to deal with their own families drama let alone having to navigate all this extremist stuff ๐Ÿšซ anyway im all about community safety and lets not forget those poor cops who gotta put themselves on the line every time there's a protest ๐Ÿ™

Ugh, this is soooo problematic ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ... I mean, I get where they're coming from - community safety first and all that... but can't we just have a respectful discussion about these issues instead of banning the march altogether? It feels like the police are playing catch-up on this far-right Ukip stuff, and it's only making things more volatile ๐Ÿคฏ. And what's with the alternative routes being "feasible" but still not allowed? Sounds like they're just trying to contain something that might get out of control ๐Ÿšซ... Anyways, I'm all for protecting people from harm, but can we please find a way to do it without stifling free speech and stuff? ๐Ÿ˜’

๐Ÿ™„ so now we're just gonna let extremist groups march through Tower Hamlets whenever they feel like it? Like, what's next, gonna allow them to set up tents in the park too? ๐Ÿคฏ the whole point of having a police force is to keep everyone safe, but I guess that only applies if you're not planning on inciting violence or spreading hate... just saying ๐Ÿ˜

Ugh, this is so frustrating ๐Ÿคฏ! I mean, I get what Scotland Yard is trying to do โ€“ keep everyone safe, but at the same time, aren't they just exacerbating the problem? ๐Ÿ™„ These far-right groups are already causing so much trouble and now the police are basically telling them "nope, we're not having it"? ๐Ÿ˜’ Like, yeah, let's not have a march that could turn into a riot! But at the same time, what about free speech? I'm all for keeping communities safe, but do they really need to block every single event? ๐Ÿค” It feels like they're walking on eggshells here and it's just gonna lead to more tension. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ˜ฌ this is soooo worrying ๐Ÿค•. how can ukip even get away with this kinda march? ๐Ÿค” they're already spreading hate & fear ๐Ÿ˜ˆ, now they wanna bring it 2 tower hamlets? ๐ŸŒ† no way! ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ the police gotta prioritize safety 4 real ๐Ÿ’ฏ, not just sayin' it ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ. i'm all 4 community safety ๐Ÿšจ, but c'mon, can't we just have a chill convo instead of this drama ๐Ÿ˜’? ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ‘Š

Ugh, what's going on with this far-right Ukip march in Tower Hamlets ๐Ÿคฏ? I'm telling you, it's all about controlling the narrative and silencing dissenting voices ๐Ÿ’ธ. The police are just trying to maintain order, but really they're suppressing free speech and creating more tensions between communities ๐Ÿ‘ฅ. I mean, who is really behind these protests? It can't be a coincidence that there's always some kind of extremist group stirring up trouble ๐Ÿค”. And what's with the mass deportations march? Sounds like a smokescreen to me ๐Ÿšจ. The Met needs to get to the bottom of this and stop covering their tracks ๐Ÿ”. Mark my words, there's more to this story than meets the eye ๐Ÿ‘€.

im so down for some uk politics rn ๐Ÿค”... like seriously though, what's up with ukip and their extremist vibes? its like, you can disagree without being extreme right? theyre literally making a whole scene out of this march thingy in tower hamlets and the cops are all like "nah bruv, cant have that" ๐Ÿšซ. i get it, safety first and all but its also about giving ppl space to protest peacefully. doesnt mean u gotta agree with em, but can we just not make it a whole ugly situation?

I'm kinda worried about this march thingy... I mean, I get why Scotland Yard is tryin' to keep everyone safe, but it's also like they're tryin' to stifle our freedom of speech, you know? ๐Ÿค” Like, what if people wanna protest against Ukip and its racist policies? Shouldn't we be able to do that? ๐Ÿšซ But at the same time, I don't wanna see anythin' go down and people get hurt... it's like, how do we balance all this? ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

I've been thinkin' a lot about this and I'm not sure what the answer is... maybe Scotland Yard should just have more support on the ground to keep everyone safe? Or maybe they should find ways to educate people about what's goin' on so we can all make informed decisions? ๐Ÿค Anyway, it's defo a tricky situation! ๐Ÿ’ช
