Some Americans say they'll go without health insurance as ACA rates spike

For many Americans, the rising costs of Affordable Care Act (ACA) insurance plans are becoming a daunting reality. Kassidy Hooter, a 24-year-old mother of three from Louisiana, is one such example. She was hit with a massive $4,000 bill in December when her ACA subsidy expired, leaving her family facing significant out-of-pocket costs.

In order to manage the financial burden, Hooter considered giving birth at home instead of at a hospital, citing the "insane amount of debt" she would have taken on. However, after consulting with medical professionals, she ultimately decided to forgo insurance altogether, opting for a temporary financial aid package from a local medical center that will cover her care until late March.

The rising costs of ACA insurance are having far-reaching consequences for millions of Americans who rely on the subsidies. Experts warn that if Congress fails to come up with a solution, 22 million people could lose their coverage, exacerbating the existing healthcare crisis.

Since its introduction in 2010, the ACA has significantly reduced the number of uninsured Americans from approximately 15% to 8%. However, without the tax credits, premiums for ACA enrollees will increase by an average of 114%, making health insurance a luxury that many cannot afford. Michelle Sternthal, interim senior director of policy and strategy at Community Catalyst, notes that this is effectively turning insurance into a luxury item and medical debt into the default.

The House of Representatives has approved a three-year extension of the expired ACA tax credits, but its fate remains uncertain in the Republican-led Senate. If implemented, the measure could provide a starting point for a compromise that would keep the credits alive in some form.

The rising costs of health insurance are having a devastating impact on families like Hooter's and Kanas', who are struggling to make ends meet. Stacy Kanas, a 59-year-old small business owner from Florida, is now considering going without health insurance after realizing that her monthly premium would rise by over 50% due to the loss of her subsidy.

Experts warn that even people who keep their ACA coverage could end up skipping out on care due to high deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses. Robert Myers, a consultant from Missouri, switched to a bronze plan last year but now faces significant costs due to $80 co-pays and an $8,000 deductible. As a result, he's planning on scaling back on doctor's visits, leading to more people seeking emergency room care.

The consequences of this trend can be far-reaching, driving up costs for other patients and facilities seeking to recoup the losses. "Every delay locks families into decisions that harm their health and their financial stability, but then also reverberate out into the business community, the local community," says Sternthal, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive solution to address the rising costs of ACA insurance.

I'm super worried about people like Kassidy and Stacy who are struggling to afford healthcare 😩. The thought of them having to choose between paying their bills or getting medical care is just heartbreaking. I think we need to find a way to make health insurance more affordable for everyone, not just the lucky ones who can keep their subsidies 💸. It's not fair that people like Robert have to scale back on doctor visits because they can't afford it 🤕. We need to get Congress to work together on a solution ASAP ⏰.

😔 this is getting serious.. 22 million people could lose coverage if congress cant come up with a plan. its not just about ppl who cant afford it anymore, but the ripple effects on hospitals and emergency rooms too. what's the point of having affordable healthcare if ppl are gonna opt out due to high costs? 🤯

I'm telling you, this is just another example of how they're slowly taking away our freedom to choose 🤑. They keep saying it's because of inflation and market forces, but I think there's more to it than that. I've been researching this stuff for a while now, and it seems like they're trying to create a system where only the wealthy can afford healthcare. I mean, come on, 114% increase in premiums? That's just crazy! 🤯 And what about all these temporary aid packages? Sounds like they're just patching up the problem without fixing the root cause. I'm not buying it... or should I say, I'm not paying for it 😂. This is all part of their master plan to control our lives and force us into debt. Wake up, sheeple! 💡

🤔 This is getting crazy! I mean, who can afford $4,000 in medical bills? And now they're talking about making health insurance a luxury item? It's like, what are we even doing here? 🙄

I'm all for trying to find ways to reduce costs and make things more affordable, but this is just ridiculous. I mean, 22 million people could lose their coverage if Congress doesn't do something. That's just heartbreaking.

And it's not just the individuals who are affected, it's whole families like Kassidy Hooter's and Stacy Kanas' who are struggling to make ends meet. They're having to decide between paying their medical bills or putting food on the table for their kids. It's just not right.

I don't get why we can't work together as a country to find a solution that works for everyone. We've come so far with the ACA, but now it feels like we're taking two steps forward and one step back.

I'm seriously hoping that Congress does something soon to address this issue. We need some common sense and leadership here. This is just too much to bear. 😕

awww poor kassidy 🤗 she's already dealing with so much stress as a single mom of three, and now this?! 😱 4000 dollars is a HUGE bill 🤑 I'm literally shaking my head thinking about how hard it must be for her to figure out what to do next 💁‍♀️ at least the temp financial aid package from the medical center will help until late march ⏰ Fingers crossed that congress comes up with a solution soon and these subsidies don't disappear 🤞 this is just too heartbreaking 😔

I'm getting super frustrated about this ACA thing 🤯. I mean, I get it, healthcare is expensive, but $4,000 bill?! That's just crazy 💸! And what's up with these people having to choose between paying their bills or going without health insurance? It's like they're being forced to make a choice between their health and their wallet 🤦‍♀️. I know we can do better than this 🙏.

And don't even get me started on the fact that 22 million people could lose their coverage if Congress doesn't come up with a solution 💔. That's just devastating for so many families 🤕. We need to find a way to make healthcare more affordable, not less expensive 😩.

I'm all about layout and structure, but sometimes I feel like we're just throwing our hands up in the air and saying "oh well" when it comes to healthcare policy 📊. It's time for some real change 💪. We need to work together to find a solution that benefits everyone, not just the most vulnerable people 🤝.

I don't think it's a good idea to get rid of insurance altogether 🤔... I mean, it is, but only if we're talking about getting rid of the whole thing 🙅‍♂️. If people can just get temporary financial aid packages like Hooter did, that's a decent solution, right? 😐

But on the other hand, think about all those people who are stuck with astronomical deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses... aren't they basically just getting insurance too 🤑? And what about the medical centers that offer these temporary deals? Are they just taking advantage of desperate families? 🤷‍♀️

And let's not forget about the experts' warnings that this is all going to lead to even more people skipping care and ending up in emergency rooms... doesn't that just mean we're throwing money at the problem instead of solving it? 🚮

can you believe this is what's happening to people like Kassidy Hooter 🤯 her family is literally being torn apart because of some number and it just feels so unfair 😩 I mean what even is the point of having healthcare if you're just gonna be forced to choose between paying bills or going without treatment? 💸 the whole system is just so messed up right now it's like no one cares about people who are actually struggling 🤕

and don't even get me started on how this affects low-income families like Kassidy's they're already barely scraping by and then you throw in some massive healthcare bill and watch them go under 💸 it's just not fair that we're expected to be more responsible than the system itself should be taking care of us 🤷‍♀️

and what really gets me is how this whole thing started as a good intention in 2010 and now look where we are 🙄 it's like Congress was just playing games with people's lives instead of actually fixing the problem 😒 I'm so tired of these politicians making promises they can't keep and then leaving us to deal with the fallout 💔

can't believe this is where we're at 🤯 ACA is supposed to be affordable healthcare not some luxury item that only the wealthy can afford 💸 22 million people losing coverage? that's just insane 😱 and it's not just the cost, it's the stress and anxiety of not knowing what you'll get when you need medical care most 🤕 we need congress to step up and come up with a real solution, not just some temporary fix 📦 this is about people's lives, not just politics 💔

🤦‍♂️ can you believe it? ACA insurance is like that one friend who's always bailing on plans 📅. One minute they're there, the next they're not 👋. And now families are having to make some tough decisions because those plans just aren't affordable 💸. I mean, $4k bill in December? Are we kidding ourselves? 😱 That's like buying a new car every year ⚗️. No wonder people are opting for "alternative" solutions like giving birth at home or skipping out on care altogether 🤰♀️. It's not just about the money; it's about the principle 💁‍♀️. We need to find a way to make health insurance work for everyone, not just those who can afford it 🤝. The fact that we're having this conversation is a reminder that our healthcare system still has a long way to go 🚀.

I'm seriously considering ditching this forum because it's always so hard to find decent threads about real issues like healthcare 🤦‍♀️. But anyway, back to Hooter and her family... I mean, what's up with these massive $4,000 bills? Like, how did ACA insurance plans go from being affordable to super expensive overnight? 🤑 And now people are having to make some crazy choices because they can't afford it - giving birth at home instead of in a hospital? That's just insane. 💥 I feel for Hooter and her family, but come on, what's the point of even having insurance if you're gonna get slammed with these kind of costs? 🤷‍♀️

The US healthcare system is literally breaking down 🤯. I've got a friend who's been living in fear of losing their insurance after hearing about Kassidy's story 😱. The thought of having to choose between paying rent or health bills is just insane 💸. It's not just the financial burden, it's the stress and anxiety that comes with not knowing what's going to happen next 🤯.

And it's not just individual families, it's a whole community that's being affected 🌎. Small businesses like Stacy's are having to raise prices because of increased costs, which can be devastating for their bottom line 💸. And let's not forget about the emergency room crisis that's already happening 👀.

The fact that some politicians are more concerned with tax cuts than people's lives is just...wow 🤷‍♂️. It's time to get real and come up with a solution that works for everyone, not just those who can afford it 💪. We need comprehensive healthcare reform, period 💯.

Ugh 🤯, this is getting crazy! I mean, $4,000 bill? That's like, insane 💸. And now Kassidy's considering giving birth at home because she can't afford the insurance... that's just not right 😩. I feel bad for her and her family. And what's up with all these people going without health insurance? It's like, we're already living in a crisis situation 🚨.

I'm so tired of the politics 🤦‍♀️. Can't they just work together to find a solution? 22 million people could lose their coverage... that's terrifying 😱. We need to do something about this ASAP 💥. And what's with the high deductibles and co-pays? It's like, we're not even sure if we're worth it anymore 🤷‍♀️.

I'm all for finding a compromise, but someone needs to step up and fix this 🚫. We need a comprehensive solution, not just a quick fix 💯. Every day that passes means more people are struggling, more families are being torn apart... it's just unacceptable 😔. Let's get this sorted out already! 🕒

🤕 can't believe what's happening with healthcare costs in the US 🤕 it's like they're pricing people out of being able to afford care 💸 and it's not just Kassidy or Stacy, millions are gonna lose coverage if this doesn't get sorted out 🤝 need some serious solutions from Congress ASAP ⏰

I'm really worried about people like Kassidy Hooter who are having to make crazy choices just to keep their health care... I mean, it's insane that premiums are going up by 114% and they're having to consider not even getting coverage anymore 🤯. It feels like the ACA is supposed to be helping people, but now it's becoming a burden for them. We need Congress to do something about this ASAP because if 22 million people lose their coverage, it's gonna get really bad 😓. I just wish there was a more permanent solution instead of just temporary fixes 🤔.

Ugh man 🤯, this is just crazy! I mean, 22 million people losing coverage? That's insane 😱. And it's not like they can just afford to pay more without any help, you know? Like Kassidy Hooter, she's gotta choose between giving birth at home or going into debt 🤰. It's a no-win situation for her and her family.

And what really gets me is that experts are saying this is turning insurance into a luxury item, where people can't even afford the deductibles anymore 💸. I mean, Robert Myers is planning on scaling back his doctor visits because of those $80 co-pays 🤕. It's like, what's the point of having health insurance if you're not going to be able to use it? 🤷‍♂️

We need to do something about this ASAP, like that three-year extension in the House, but we also need a real solution, not just a temporary fix 🔥. We gotta think about all these people who are struggling and can't afford their premiums or deductibles 🤝. It's time for Congress to step up and make some changes 💪.

The US healthcare crisis is getting worse 🤕. A 24-yr-old mom can't afford her ACA plan after her subsidy expires? That's just ridiculous 💸. She's gotta choose between giving birth at home or breaking the bank in hospitals. And now, she's stuck with a huge medical bill and no insurance to pay it off 💔. If Congress doesn't step up, 22 mil people could lose coverage 🚫. It's like they're taking away people's health just because they can't afford it 😢. The only solution I see is for Congress to come together and find a way to keep those subsidies going 🤞. We can't have families suffering while politicians play politics 🙄. This is not just about the ACA, it's about people's lives 💯.

🤯 The ACA is literally pricing people out of healthcare in America 🚨💸 I mean, $4,000 bill just because you can't afford the premium anymore? That's insane! 💥 What's next? People gonna be like "oh well, I'll just skip my doctor's appointment and hope for the best"? 😬 It's not just about the money, it's about people's lives. My cousin's sister had to go into debt because of medical bills from a minor surgery 🤕. We need Congress to do something ASAP! 💪

this is just getting crazy 😩 $4,000 bill? that's insane! i feel for kassidy hooter and stacy kanas, they're already struggling as it is... if congress can't come up with a solution, 22 million ppl will lose their coverage 🤯 it's like the ACA is turning into a luxury item 🤑 anyone who can afford it gets in, but those who need it the most are left behind 💔 we need to do better than this 🙏
