Swiss prosecutors request male bar manager to be placed in pre-trial detention over fatal fire

Swiss authorities have taken a significant step in their investigation into the fatal Alpine bar fire that occurred during New Year's Eve celebrations last month. Prosecutors have requested that one of the managers, Jacques Moretti, be placed in pre-trial detention, citing a risk of flight and the need to ensure public safety.

The request comes as authorities continue to probe the owners, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, on suspicion of involuntary homicide, bodily harm, and causing a fire. The investigation has also revealed that fire safety inspections hadn't been carried out since 2019, raising questions about how such a tragedy could have occurred in a bar with known safety issues.

The fire, which broke out less than two hours after midnight on January 1, claimed the lives of 40 people and injured another 116. Many victims were in their teens to mid-20s, and authorities are still working to identify some of those who died due to the severity of burns.

As the investigation unfolds, officials have acknowledged that the tragedy was preventable if safety measures had been implemented earlier. Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni has condemned the disaster, stating that "those responsible must be identified and prosecuted." The Rome Prosecutor's Office has launched a separate probe into the incident, while the Paris prosecutor's office is also assisting the Swiss investigation.

The request for pre-trial detention of Jacques Moretti comes as authorities seek to hold those accountable for the tragic event. While his wife, Jessica, will remain under judicial supervision, her husband's detention raises concerns about the potential risks of flight and the need for further security measures.

In a national day of mourning ceremony held in Crans-Montana, Switzerland paid tribute to the victims and their families. A minute's silence was observed across the country at 2 p.m., while church bells rang out for five minutes in honor of the deceased. The memorial service was attended by many of those who survived the tragedy, including some who were injured.

The investigation into the fire is ongoing, with authorities continuing to examine the role of soundproofing material on the ceiling and whether candles were permitted for use in the bar.

πŸ€” This whole thing is just so sad... The fact that there was no safety inspection done since 2019 is just insane πŸ™„ I mean, you've got people running a bar with known issues and then something like this happens? It's just not right.

I'm glad they're looking into it though, because at the end of the day, accountability matters πŸ’― And if Jacques Moretti does get pre-trial detention, that's a big step in the right direction. I think it's fair to say that his wife Jessica was probably pretty distraught when she found out she'd be under supervision but maybe her husband taking some time behind bars will help bring some closure for all of us.

It's also good to see the authorities acknowledging that this tragedy was preventable if they'd just done their jobs properly πŸ’ͺ And I love how Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni is speaking out about it, calling those responsible to be held accountable. It's not gonna bring back the victims, but at least we know that someone is taking this seriously.

Anyway, this whole thing has been a really tough one for everyone in Switzerland and around the world 🌎 Let's just hope they get some justice soon.

OMG, this can't be real 🀯! 40 people dead and 116 hurt at a bar party? It's just too much πŸ’”. And to think they didn't even do regular fire safety checks since 2019?! 😲 How could that happen in a country like Switzerland where everything is so safe and organized? I'm seriously worried about the investigation, though. If the authorities can prove that Jacques Moretti was involved, he should definitely be held accountable 🀝.

I'm also kinda mad at the owners for not taking care of their bar properly. Like, come on! You have a responsibility to keep your customers safe πŸ’―. I hope they get what's coming to them and that justice is served βš–οΈ. My heart goes out to all the families who lost loved ones πŸ‘«. This is just devastating πŸ€•.

omg did u know that it's not even been a month since this tragic accident happened πŸ€• like 40 people lost their lives & many more are still dealing with severe burns... how can something so preventable happen? πŸ€” i'm literally shaking thinking about all those young ppl who were at the bar that night πŸ’€ it's just heartbreaking. and now they're trying to hold one of the managers accountable, which is a good move i guess 😐 but what really gets me is that fire safety inspections hadn't been done since 2019 🀯 like how did this even happen? and what about the owners? are they gonna get the same treatment as Jacques? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ anywayz, my thoughts r with the victims & their families πŸ’”

come on ppl 🀯, can't we just focus on getting justice for those 40 victims? πŸ•ŠοΈ it's been months since that horrific accident happened but still no concrete answers πŸ’” Jacques Moretti being locked up for now is a good start, but let's not forget his wife Jessica too πŸ‘« gotta make sure they don't fly the coop or something πŸ›«οΈ and btw, how could a bar with known safety issues just leave their fire safety inspections behind? 😱 that's what's really puzzling πŸ€”

πŸ€” I'm low-key shocked that they're requesting Jacques Moretti's pre-trial detention already. I mean, 40+ people dead is a huge red flag - something had to give. Fire safety inspections haven't been done since 2019? That's wild. It's like they were just winging it and hoping for the best. πŸ’₯ The fact that candles were even allowed in the bar... I don't know, man. It feels like so many things could've gone right if safety measures had been taken seriously earlier on. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ It's also interesting to see how the investigation is unfolding - now they're looking into soundproofing material and stuff. Maybe there's more to it than we think? πŸŽ‰

omg can you even believe what's going down in switzerland?? they're trying to hold those responsible accountable for the deadliest bar fire in recent memory! 40 lives lost, 116 injured... it's just heartbreaking

i mean, pre-trial detention is definitely a step in the right direction, but let's be real, this goes way deeper than that. how did safety measures not get implemented since 2019?! that's like, basic stuff you're supposed to check regularly. it's unacceptable

and yeah, giorgia meloni saying those responsible must be identified and prosecuted is a no-brainer. italian premier or swiss officials can't just stand by and do nothing in the face of tragedy

anyway, my thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who passed away. may they find closure soon πŸ’”πŸ•ŠοΈ

I don't think it's fair to judge Jacques Moretti so harshly just yet πŸ€”. I mean, he's only a manager, right? He can't be held responsible for everything that went wrong at the bar πŸ˜•. And what about his wife Jessica? She was there too, you know πŸ’”. It's not like they're trying to avoid accountability or anything. The authorities are just trying to follow procedure and make sure everyone is held accountable in a fair manner πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. I'm sure Jacques Moretti will cooperate fully with the investigation and do everything he can to help figure out what happened πŸ”. Let's not be too quick to jump to conclusions, okay? πŸ™

I'm getting so tired of these features that come out after something like this happens 🀯. I mean, can't they just fix the safety issues before it's too late? It's been 6 years since the last inspection and look what happened! πŸ’” The fact that the owners are being probed for involuntary homicide and bodily harm is a joke - shouldn't they be held accountable from day one?! πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ And now, we're waiting for another manager to get detained over it? What's next?! πŸ˜’

I'm still trying to process what happened at that Alpine bar, it's like a total nightmare 🀯😱! The fact that they didn't do regular fire safety inspections since 2019 is just appalling, how could they be so reckless? πŸ’” The Moretti couple's alleged negligence has already led to a whole lot of people suffering, and I don't think pre-trial detention for Jacques is enough, he needs to face full justice 🚫 #JusticeForTheVictims #FireSafetyMatters #Accountability

😱 I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one... 40 people lost their lives in a preventable tragedy 🀯 It's just horrific that the owners didn't take basic safety measures seriously, especially after knowing they had safety issues since 2019 🚨 The fact that soundproofing material on the ceiling might've played a role is really disturbing too πŸ’₯ I feel so sorry for the victims' families and friends who are still grieving πŸ‘‘ It's great to see the investigation unfolding and officials taking responsibility, but it's also heartbreaking to think about how this could've been avoided πŸ€•

OMG what's going on with this Swiss bar 🀯 I mean I'm still trying to process the fact that 40 people lost their lives in a fire at a bar that didn't even have regular safety checks done since 2019?! It's like, how could this happen?! The fact that they're requesting pre-trial detention for Jacques Moretti is a big step, but it's still not enough for me. I wish the owners and managers would take responsibility for their actions and own up to what happened. And can we talk about the soundproofing material on the ceiling? Like, did no one think that would be a fire hazard?! It's just crazy. The fact that they're doing a separate probe from Italy is also interesting. I wonder if it'll lead to any real changes in safety regulations. Fingers crossed 🀞

🚨 this whole thing just feels like a nightmare... 40 lives lost, over 100 people hurt... how do we even process that? it's not just about holding people accountable, it's about making sure something like this never happens again πŸ•―οΈ the fact that fire safety inspections hadn't been done in years is just staggering. can you imagine having a bar with known safety issues and still allowing it to operate? 🀯

🀯 I think it's crazy that these guys didn't do a safety check on their bar since 2019, and then they're expecting everyone to be fine just because it hasn't happened yet? It's not rocket science, you know? You gotta have regular inspections to make sure your place is safe. And what's with the soundproofing material on the ceiling, anyway? I mean, I get that bars like to be loud and all, but do they really need to install soundproofing just so people can't hear the music? It's a recipe for disaster, if you ask me.

And can we talk about how many lives were lost because of this tragedy? 40 people are dead, and another 116 were hurt. That's not something that should ever happen in a bar. I know there are always going to be risks when you're around fire and loud music, but that doesn't mean you have to take those risks by ignoring basic safety protocols.

I'm all for holding these guys accountable, though. If they knew about the safety issues and did nothing about them, then they should definitely face some consequences. But at the same time, we need to make sure that we're not just punishing people who are already grieving and traumatized. The investigation needs to get to the bottom of what really happened here, so that we can learn from it and prevent something like this from happening again in the future.

It's just a tragedy, you know? A senseless waste of life and possibility. And I think we should all take a moment to reflect on what really matters in life: our own safety, our relationships with each other, and making sure that we're doing everything we can to prevent something like this from happening again. πŸ’”

🀞 I just can't even imagine how devastating it must've been for everyone involved... 40 lives lost, 116 injured... it's just so senseless πŸ€•. I do think they're doing everything they can to hold those responsible accountable, though - pre-trial detention is a big step in the right direction πŸš”. But at the same time, I'm really worried about Jacques Moretti being let out on bail - what if he does decide to leave Switzerland? 😬 The fire safety inspections hadn't been done since 2019... it's just so frustrating that something like this could happen when there were known issues with the bar πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. Anyways, my condolences go out to all the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives πŸ’”.

πŸ€” I'm not sure this whole pre-trial detention thing is going to make a difference here... 40 lives lost already, and we're still trying to figure out how this could've happened? πŸš’ It's like they knew there was an issue with fire safety all those years ago, but nobody bothered to do anything about it. It's just so... preventable πŸ˜”. And now they want to lock up one of the managers just because he might try to leave? That doesn't seem fair to me... πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ What's next? Detaining everyone in Crans-Montana for questioning? πŸ˜‚
