Tell us your experiences of living without a living room

The traditional living room – a staple of many homes has become increasingly rare in recent years. According to a new study, nearly one-third of rental properties advertised on SpareRoom now boast no such space at all. Instead, landlords are opting to convert communal areas into additional bedrooms, effectively turning these once-coveted spaces into something entirely different.

But what does this shift mean for those living without a living room? The effects can be significant – not just in terms of household dynamics but also on the social experience. Gone are the days of gathering around the TV or playing board games with family and friends; instead, people have taken to making the most of alternative spaces like kitchens.

"I miss having a dedicated area where we could all hang out," says one homeowner, who wished to remain anonymous. "The kitchen's become our communal space – we'll often play games or watch movies together while cooking dinner. It's been fun, but it's not the same as having a proper lounge."

This change has also led some people to explore more unconventional ways of saving money and maximizing space in their homes. By sacrificing the living room altogether, homeowners can enjoy reduced utility bills and – depending on how they choose to use the space – even additional income from renting out rooms.

However, for many, the benefits come with a significant price tag – namely, the loss of a central social hub. As one individual notes, "We're always in the kitchen or the backyard now; we don't really have anywhere quiet and private to relax."

Ultimately, whether living without a living room is a good way to save money or a trade-off worth making depends on your perspective. For those who value flexibility and are willing to adapt, the benefits might outweigh the drawbacks. However, for others – particularly those with large families or those simply looking to create lasting memories in the home – it may be something they can no longer live without.

I feel like we're losing out on so much coziness with all these communal areas becoming bedrooms 🤔. I mean, who doesn't love curling up in a comfy living room with their fave snacks and movies? It's become super common for people to just grab a board game or cards and play in the kitchen – don't get me wrong, it's fun, but sometimes you just want some quiet time 🙏. I've got friends who've actually converted their outdoor spaces into chill zones and it's honestly so lovely 🌿. Maybe instead of getting rid of the living room we should be exploring ways to make them even cozier? 🛋️

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this trend 🤯. I mean, what's next? Losing our front yards to tiny home parks or something 😂. For me, it's all about finding alternative spaces that work for us. We've taken over the dining room and turned it into a cozy nook where we can chill after dinner. It's become my favorite spot in the house 🛋️. But I do feel like I'm missing out on having a proper hangout space, you know? Like, when are we going to have game nights or just lounge around without feeling guilty about being in the way of the TV 📺.

🤔 I feel like we're losing that cozy vibe from our homes - the sofas, the coffee tables... it's all about functionality now 🛋️. Still, I guess it's a trade-off for those who want to save space & cash 💸. My fam & I have a tiny kitchen table where we play board games 👾 - it's not ideal but makes do 😊.

I've gotta say, I'm kinda torn about this one 🤔. On one hand, saving money on utility bills is a win-win, especially for those who are super strapped for cash. But on the other hand, not having that cozy living room space can be pretty harsh 😕. My partner and I have that rare luxury, thankfully! We love just chillin' in our lounge after a long day, sipping hot tea and catching up on our fave shows. But if we had to switch it up, we'd probably find some alternative spot to hang out - like the attic or something 🤷‍♀️.

Personally, I think flexibility is key 💪. If you're willing to get creative with your space, there are so many ways to make do without a living room. Like, have you ever tried turning a corner into a little nook? It's been game-changing for us! Plus, it's not like we have this luxury every day - we've gotta be realistic about our space needs 🙏.

For those who can't imagine life without that central social hub though... I get it 😊. For me and mine, the living room is where memories are made - from lazy Sundays to family movie nights 🎥. If you're looking for a break from the kitchen noise or just need some peace and quiet, having a dedicated lounge space can be total heaven 😌.

At the end of the day, it's all about finding that balance between saving money and saving sanity 💯. How do YOU make do without a living room? 🤔

I'm totally down for the communal vibe thing 😊, but sometimes I just need to chill in my own space, ya know? Like when I wanna watch a Netflix marathon or just zone out on my laptop. Kitchens can be super fun, but they're not always the most relaxing spot 🤷‍♀️. For me, having a dedicated living room is all about creating memories with loved ones – game nights, movie nights, lazy Sundays... it's the perfect way to unwind 😌.

And yeah, I've seen some cool ways people are repurposing their old living rooms into home offices or art studios 💡. It's all about being flexible and making the most of your space 🤓. But for those who value having a central hangout spot... I get it 👍. Maybe we can find a happy medium – like having a smaller, more cozy living room that still feels like a chill spot? 🏠💕

I'm so over this trend of getting rid of living rooms 🤦‍♀️. I mean, what's the point of even calling it a home if you can't even hang out with the family in a comfy spot? My friends and I always used to have movie nights or game nights on the couch, but now we're stuck playing games in the kitchen because that's basically our only communal area 😒. And don't even get me started on trying to cook dinner while trying to relax - it's just not the same vibe 🤷‍♀️.

I've been looking at some apartments online and I was really disappointed when they didn't have a living room 🏠😔. It's like, what's the point of even having an apartment if you can't chill out in a dedicated space? 🤦‍♀️. I'm starting to think that this trend is more about landlords making extra cash than it is about creating functional homes 👊.

omg i'm so down for that 🤩 i mean who needs a living room anyway? my friends and i would always end up in the kitchen watching tv or playing games lol but like now we have to get creative because our landlord converted the whole area into a giant bedroom 🏠😴 has anyone else seen those tiny home vids on tiktok where they have these super cozy "living rooms" that are literally just a few chairs and a coffee table? i mean if that's what it takes to save money then count me in! my only concern is when we have family over and there's no comfy spot for them to chill 🤔

I'm thinking, it's kinda wild how fast we're adapting to change, right? 🤯 I personally love having an extra bedroom or two, but I get why people want to make the most of their space. My friends and I used to have game nights all the time in our living room, but now we do it in the kitchen instead... it's actually kinda fun! But at the same time, sometimes I just wanna chill without anyone bothering me 🙄. Maybe having a dedicated space is overrated? It's all about finding that balance between saving money and staying connected with loved ones, I suppose. What's your take on this?
