Though ‘Zootopia 2’ lacks original’s bite, it’s still a fun romp - Detroit Metro Times

Disney's Zootopia sequel, released in 2025, does not quite live up to the original's groundbreaking status, but that doesn't mean it's a bad movie. Instead, it's more of a conventional animated adventure with chases and animal puns taking center stage over nuanced storytelling.

The film picks up where the first left off, with Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, now official partners at the Zootopia Police Department, facing their own prejudices and fears as they tackle a new case involving a sweet pit viper, a nasty family of billionaire lynxes, and a lost part of the city. While it's clear that Disney is trying to capture some of the original film's magic, the sequel relies too heavily on formulaic chases and animal puns.

The animation, while still colorful and visually appealing, feels more generic than in the original, with less emphasis on transporting the viewer to a richly detailed world. The addition of new locations, such as a parody of Burning Man called "Burning Mammal" and a massive snowy hedge maze inspired by The Shining, are diverting but lack the same level of immersion as the original Rainforest District.

Despite this, the sequel has its moments, particularly in its exploration of gentrification, fear of the other, and the cold calculations of the obscenely rich. These themes may not have the same emotional heft as the original, but they're still timely and important.

It's clear that Disney is committed to continuing the Zootopia franchise with a new film, as well as additional media, including a TV show and video games. While this might be predictable for fans of the series, it's hard not to feel excited about seeing Judy, Nick, and their friends go on more adventures that teach kids acceptance, love, and other valuable lessons.

Ultimately, Zootopia 2 is an enjoyable but unremarkable film that fails to live up to its predecessor's standards. Still, with a talented voice cast and a script that genuinely loves the characters, it's not a complete disappointment either. With time, this sequel might develop a following of its own, even if it doesn't quite reach the same heights as the original.

I'm soooo disappointed in this movie 🙄 it's like they took all the magic from the first one and replaced it with...more chases and animal puns 😴 I mean, what happened to the deep storytelling and nuanced characters that made Zootopia so special? And don't even get me started on the animation, it's like they phoned it in 📝 I was expecting something truly groundbreaking, not just a generic animated adventure. But hey, at least they're trying to tackle some important themes, so points for that 👍

I FEEL LIKE ZOOTOPA 2 IS KINDA...MEH 😐 IT'S STILL A FUN MOVIE WITH COOL ANIMALS AND ALL, BUT IT DOESN'T HAVE THE SAME OOMPH AS THE FIRST ONE. I MEAN, WHO DOESN'T LOVE JUDY AND NICK'S ADVENTURES, RIGHT? 🤣 BUT SERIOUSLY, I THINK DISNEY WAS TRYING TOO HARD TO RECREATE THAT MAGIC FROM THE FIRST MOVIE. THEY COULDN'T EVEN BE BOTHERED TO MAKE IT AS IMMERSIVE AS THE ORIGINAL RAINFORREST DISTRICT. STILL, I GUESS IT'S OKAY 😊

I gotta say, I went into this new Zootopia movie thinking it'd be just another fun romp with Judy and Nick, but it didn't entirely deliver for me 🤔. The original was so special because it tackled real issues like racism and prejudice in a way that felt authentic and impactful. This sequel feels more like a rehash of familiar themes and gags, without the same depth or heart ❤️. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie and all - the animation is still gorgeous and the voice cast is top-notch 🎬 - but it just didn't have that magic that made the first one so memorable for me. Still, I'm excited to see what they do next with this franchise! 😊

idk why disney 2 tried to copy the formula from the first movie so much 🤔. can't they try somethin new for a sec? like, what about explorin some deeper issues or plot twists? instead we got more animal puns and chases 🐈😴. but at least they tackled gentrification and stuff that's still relevant today 🙏. i'm curious how this movie is gonna do in merch sales tho 💸👀

I just watched Zootopia 2 🐰👀... honestly, it feels like Disney is reusing old tricks from the first film instead of pushing the story forward 💡. The animation is still pretty cool, but it's not like we're in a whole new world anymore 🌳. I mean, a Burning Mammal parody? Come on, it felt like they were just phoning it in 😐. Still, I did appreciate the nods to gentrification and acceptance – those themes are super important 💖. It's just... I dunno, expected more from the sequel 🤔. Guess you can't have a perfect follow-up, right?

I just watched Zootopia 2 🐰🎥 and I gotta say, it's still fun but it's like they took all the magic from the first one and bottled it for this sequel 😔. The new case is cool and all, but it feels like we've seen it before - more chases, less depth, you know? 🚗👀

The animation looks alright, I guess... it's not as immersive as the Rainforest District from the first one 🌴. But hey, at least they tried to mix things up with some new locations like Burning Mammal and The Shining-inspired hedge maze 🎉.

I liked how they tackled gentrification and stuff, it's real talk 💯. And Judy and Nick are still hilarious together 😂. But overall, it just doesn't have that same spark as the original. Still, I'm stoked to see what other adventures these characters get up to 🐾🎮.

I mean, come on Disney... you can do better than this 😜. But at least we're getting more Zootopia content, so that's something right? 🤷‍♂️

I'm just kinda underwhelmed by Zootopia 2 🤔. I mean, it's still super colorful and fun to watch, but it feels like they're playing it a bit too safe this time around 😐. The story's not as complex or clever as the first one, and while I love Judy and Nick's dynamic, their romance kinda takes center stage and it's not as organic as in the original 💘.

The themes of gentrification and fear of the unknown are really important, but they're kinda glossed over a bit too quickly 🙅‍♀️. And let's be real, some of those animal puns are just cringeworthy 😂. Still, it's not all bad – I loved the little nods to Burning Man and The Shining, that was a fun touch 🎉. Overall, I'd say it's a solid but unspectacular sequel 👍.

I'm like totally torn about this new Zootopia movie 🤔... on one hand I loved how they brought back some crazy locations from the first film, Burning Mammal is such a wild idea 🎉, but at the same time, it felt kinda watered down compared to the original's epicness 🙅‍♂️. The animation was still super colorful and all that jazz, but sometimes I felt like I was just browsing through some old memes rather than being immersed in the world of Zootopia 🤷‍♀️. On the flip side, it's great that they're tackling real issues like gentrification and fear of the other, those themes are super important 🙌... but I wish they would've done a better job at making them more impactful 🤔. Still, I can see why fans of the series will love this new movie, especially if they enjoy the adventures of Judy and Nick 😊...

I felt kinda meh about Zootopia 2 🤔. I mean, it's still cute and all, but after that first movie, I was expecting more depth, ya know? The new case they're solving is pretty cool, but it just didn't feel as fresh or exciting as the original. And those animal puns got a bit old 😴. But hey, at least it's trying to tackle some big issues like gentrification and stuff 🤝. I hope they keep exploring those themes in future films. The animation was pretty on point, but not quite as wow-inducing as the first one. Still, I'm always down for more Judy and Nick adventures 💕. And let's be real, who doesn't love a good "Burning Mammal" parody 🎉?
