To audit Legislature, DiZoglio maintains push to hire lawyers funded by GOP candidate

Massachusetts State Auditor Diana DiZoglio is pushing forward with plans to hire outside lawyers funded by Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue, despite reservations from Attorney General Andrea Campbell's office.

Campbell has declined to give her approval for the arrangement, citing "significant legal and ethical questions." Meanwhile, DiZoglio's office believes that Minogue can pay for these attorneys under the state's rules of professional conduct.

In 2024, voters approved a ballot measure authorizing DiZoglio to audit the State Legislature. However, Democratic leaders within the Legislature have raised concerns that DiZoglio's proposed audit could be unconstitutional due to issues surrounding separation of powers.

DiZoglio has maintained that Campbell is "gaslighting" the public and her office has provided all the necessary information about the proposed audit. The auditor's office previously retained law firm Donnelly, Conroy & Gelhaar to potentially represent them in a lawsuit against the Legislature.

In response, DiZoglio is seeking appointments of three attorneys from Donnelly, Conroy & Gelhaar as "Special Assistant Attorneys General" to pursue litigation against the Legislature.

Minogue has offered financial support for these outside lawyers and has been vocal about his desire to see an audit of the State Legislature take place.

Governor Maura Healey remains neutral on the issue, choosing not to get involved in the dispute between DiZoglio and Campbell.

Campbell's office has asked DiZoglio's office to provide more information about the specifics of the proposed audit.

I'm kinda confused about this whole thing πŸ€”... I mean, I get why they wanna audit the State Legislature, it's like when we do a school project and someone finds out we cheated πŸ˜‚. But in all seriousness, if there are "significant legal and ethical questions" then shouldn't DiZoglio just clarify what's going on instead of bringing in outside lawyers? It's like if our principal said we can get extra help from a tutor without checking with the school board first πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. And why is Governor Healey staying neutral, she should at least say something about it since this is kinda big πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. I hope DiZoglio's office can provide more info about what's really going on, we don't wanna have any surprises like when we find out our school budget got cut πŸ€‘

πŸ€” I'm not sure how this is going down. So, Diana DiZoglio thinks she can just hire these outside lawyers funded by Mike Minogue without getting AG Campbell on board? That's like trying to navigate a minefield blindfolded πŸ˜‚. And what's up with the AG's office thinking there are "significant legal and ethical questions" but not saying exactly what they are? 🀐

I also find it weird that DiZoglio's team is trying to spin this as if Campbell is "gaslighting" her, when really she should be explaining why this whole deal doesn't add up πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. And the fact that Minogue has offered to foot the bill for these lawyers is just... πŸ€‘ interesting?

Governor Healey staying neutral on this one is a good call, imo πŸ‘Œ. Can't have her taking sides without making it seem like she's picking winners and losers πŸ†. Anyways, I'll be keeping an eye on this one – updates, please! πŸ’‘

this situation got me thinkin... how much power do we really give to auditors when they're gettin' funded by someone with a vested interest? seems like diziglio's office is tryin' to navigate some gray areas here, but it's cool how campbell's raisin concerns about the separation of powers. it's like, what happens when you put power in the hands of one person or group, even if it's supposed to be for the greater good? we gotta keep an eye on who's gettin' funded and makin' decisions on our behalf πŸ€”πŸ’‘

πŸ€” this whole thing is giving me The West Wing vibes πŸ“Ί, you know? like everything's just super tense and bureaucratic 😬... anyway, I think it's pretty shady that Mike Minogue is basically throwing money at Diana DiZoglio to get what she wants πŸ€‘. I mean, isn't there something about the law of professional conduct that says no one can pay for lawyers in a way that looks like it could be an actual bribe? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

and ugh, Andrea Campbell is just being super professional here πŸ‘©β€πŸ’Ό... declining to give her approval and asking for more info πŸ“. she's not going to let this go without making sure everything checks out first πŸ’―.

Governor Healey staying neutral is kinda weird tho πŸ€”... I feel like she should be all about that audit life πŸ’ͺ! but whatever, it's a whole mess, and now I'm just waiting for the lawyers to duke it out in court πŸ“š.

I think this is getting messy 🀯. The whole thing feels like a power struggle between DiZoglio and Campbell, with Minogue just trying to get involved in the process. If they can't agree on how this audit should go down, it's going to be hard to make sure anything gets done.

From what I've read, both sides are making some valid points πŸ€”. DiZoglio has been elected by voters to conduct audits, and Campbell is just trying to keep things transparent and fair. But at the same time, the rules of professional conduct do seem pretty clear - if Minogue's paying for these lawyers, it's probably not going to be okay.

Governor Healey staying out of this is a good call πŸ‘ - she doesn't need to take sides in something that's already creating drama. This whole thing just needs to get sorted out so people can have some confidence that the audit will actually happen and won't end up in court πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

Omg, i feel like diziglo is getting really stressed out over this 🀯 her office is going through so much drama right now... and andrea campbell's concerns are valid too lol. it's not just about politics, it's about making sure they follow the rules and do their job properly πŸ’‘ i hope everything gets sorted out soon, diziglo doesn't need all this extra pressure on her πŸ€—

😬 This whole thing is giving me a major "House of Cards" vibe 🀯 I don't think Andrea Campbell is buying what Diana DiZoglio is selling, and honestly, who can blame her? πŸ’β€β™€οΈ The fact that they're trying to get around the AG's office by having Minogue foot the bill for these outside lawyers is just sketchy. And let's not forget, there are some serious concerns about the constitutionality of DiZoglio's proposed audit πŸ€” I'm curious to see how this all plays out, especially since Governor Healey isn't taking sides... yet 😐 Maybe it's time for some fresh eyes to come in and shake things up? πŸ”„

I'm low-key worried about this whole situation πŸ€”. I mean, Diana DiZoglio is pushing forward with hiring these outside lawyers funded by Mike Minogue, but Andrea Campbell's office is like "hold up, we got some major issues here" 😬. And honestly, who knows what's going on behind the scenes? It's all pretty murky. Can't help but wonder if there's more to this audit than meets the eye πŸ‘€. DiZoglio says Campbell is being all gaslighty and stuff, but I'm not buying it. She needs to give us some real info about what's really going on πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. And what's up with Minogue just pouring money into the situation? Just seems fishy to me 🐟. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out ⏰.

idk why auditors have to pay for their own lawyers, it feels like a conflict of interest πŸ€”. if minogue's just gonna foot the bill, shouldn't campbell just let diZoglio hire whoever she wants? seems like a lot of red tape and politics involved...

I'm low-key annoyed with this whole situation... πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ So, basically, DiZoglio wants to hire these outside lawyers funded by Minogue, but Campbell's office is all like "hold up, that doesn't seem right". And honestly, can't we just stick to the rules? It feels like a big mess. Like, if DiZoglio really needs help with her audit, why not just ask the State Legislature for some budget or something? Or better yet, just let Campbell's office handle it. This whole thing is starting to smell like a power struggle πŸ€‘

πŸ€” This whole thing is super shady 🚨. Like, I don't get why Andrea Campbell's office is being so extra about this. They just need to chill and let DiZoglio do her thing... right? πŸ˜’ But seriously, if Minogue is willing to foot the bill for these lawyers, then what's the problem? Maybe it's just a case of "he said, she said" πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. I think Governor Healey should intervene tho, at least give some guidance on this one. This could get messy πŸ“

I don't trust this whole thing πŸ€”. So Mike Minogue is offering to pay for these outside lawyers but DiZoglio's office thinks it's cool, huh? And Campbell is just gonna sit there and let them do whatever they want? Sounds like a fishy deal to me 🐟. I mean, what's the real motive here? Is Minogue trying to influence DiZoglio's investigation or what? And don't even get me started on how DiZoglio is trying to spin this as Campbell being "gaslighting" her... come on πŸ˜’. The public deserves better than this shady politics πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ.
