‘We’re not those little girls anymore’: Women who accused pastor of abuse see him in court

Four women stood outside a Tulsa County courtroom on Monday, their eyes fixed on pastor Joe Campbell as he waited for his case to be called. It had been nearly a month since his arrest on charges of sexual abuse against two girls, including 56-year-old Lisa Ball, who was just nine when the alleged abuse occurred. The hearing before an Oklahoma district court judge focused on the terms of Campbell's release while he awaits trial, but for the women, it marked a long-awaited reckoning.

"We're not those little girls anymore," Ball said, her words echoing in the air as she stood alongside Kerri Jackson and two other accusers, who have shared similar stories of abuse at the hands of the 68-year-old pastor. Campbell is charged with first-degree rape in connection with one woman's allegations and one count of lewd or indecent acts against another.

The courtroom appearance marked a turning point for the women, who say their complaints were ignored by pastors, law enforcement, and child welfare officials when they first came forward as teenagers. Jackson, now 53, has said Campbell sexually abused her repeatedly in Tulsa in the early 1980s, beginning when she was about nine. Ball, meanwhile, says Campbell invited her to live with him after she became a teen mother and then sexually abused her repeatedly.

Campbell's silence is telling, as he has not entered a plea and his lawyer did not respond to questions outside the courtroom. If convicted, he faces the possibility of life in prison.

The hearing comes as part of an ongoing investigation by NBC News into years of sexual abuse allegations against Campbell, who was once a prominent figure within the Assemblies of God, the world's largest Pentecostal denomination. Nine other people have come forward with similar allegations, including four men who say they were subjected to similar forms of abuse.

As the women stand outside the courthouse, their faces set with determination, it is clear that this is more than just a case – it's a moment of justice for survivors of childhood trauma and abuse.

🤦‍♀️ I mean, come on, 56 years old? That's not little anymore, Lisa Ball! 🙄 You're a survivor, congratulations, but don't you think it's time to move on from the past and focus on your life now? This guy's been charged with some serious crimes and if he gets convicted, he'll be lucky to get out of prison alive. 💔 I'm not buying the whole "I was just a little girl" thing, Ball. You're a grown woman now, it's time to take control of your own narrative and not let someone else define you. 🙅‍♀️

man I feel so much anger but also so much sadness 😔...these stories are like rips in my heart it's hard to even think about how these girls were treated as kids they were basically ignored and nobody believed them until now...and the fact that this pastor was a respected leader in his community, wow just thinking about it is making me angry 💪...the justice system finally stepped up but it's like 30 years too late for those girls...I hope Campbell faces life in prison and I hope these other survivors find some peace knowing they're not alone 👫

🤕 Just thinking about what those girls went through as kids makes my blood boil... I mean, I'm glad they're finally getting the justice they deserve, but how many others are still out there suffering in silence? 🙅‍♀️ The fact that Campbell's silence is even more suspicious than his actions is just mind-blowing. And can we talk about the systemic failure that allowed this to happen for so long? It's not just the church or law enforcement, it's a whole system of people who failed those girls and failed them. 💔 We need to do better, folks...

🤔 I'm glad to see these women finally getting some closure, but I gotta say, I'm still uneasy about Campbell's silence. If he was truly innocent, wouldn't he be defending himself by now? 🙅‍♂️ I mean, the fact that his lawyer isn't even commenting on the allegations is pretty telling. And what about all these other people who've come forward with similar stories? It seems like a really big pattern of abuse here... 🤯 Still, I'm glad these women are getting their voices heard and finding some justice after being silenced for so long 💪

🤯 can you believe this dude was able to get away with this stuff for so long? 9 whole years! I mean, what kind of system lets a pedophile pastor walk free? 🚫 the fact that these women are finally speaking out and getting some justice is everything, it's like they've been silenced for far too long 💁‍♀️. I'm glad to see the community is rallying behind them, it's about time someone held this man accountable 👏. the statistics on the number of people who come forward with abuse allegations are insane, 9 more victims? that's just heartbreaking 😩.

It's crazy how these women have had to wait so long for justice. I mean, 9-year-old Lisa Ball was just a kid when she went through all this, and now here she is, standing up against the guy who did her wrong. 🤯 It's not just about Campbell, though - it's about the system that failed them too. The fact that law enforcement and child welfare officials ignored their complaints as teens... that's what's really messed up. 😡

I'm glad to see these women are finally getting some recognition, even if it's just for being brave enough to speak out. And it's not like they're asking for the moon or anything - just a fair trial and a chance to tell their story without fear of intimidation. 💪 It's time for Campbell to take responsibility for his actions, and for the world to listen to the survivors' voices. 🗣️

OMG did u hear about pastor Campbell? like what r we even talking bout? i mean i know its sad & all but why do these ppl have to suffer thru this? cant they just talk 2 each other like normal ppl? & wut's up wit the law enforcment? they shud b helpin out these girls instead of ignoring them when they were teens

i dunno bout u guys but im kinda thinkin its weird that pastor Campbell didnt say nuthin in court tho that says a lotta things about him, right? & what r the chances dat all these other ppl come forward wit similar allegations? like its like he got this big ol cloud of abuse followin him arounf or somethin

anywayz i feel bad 4 these girls who went thru so much & are still tryin to heal. u guys got any idea wut they go thru on a daily basis? like emotional trauma & all that jazz... & why cant we just focus on helpin them heal instead of tryna catch ppl like pastor Campbell?

I'm feeling really emotional about this whole situation 🤕. It's heartbreaking to think about all these girls being ignored and abused by someone they trusted as a leader in their church. The fact that pastor Campbell is still silent about his actions is just gut-wrenching... like, what does he have to say for himself? 😱 The thought of him facing life in prison if convicted is definitely a justice outcome, but I wish it didn't have to come to this. Can we just go back in time and prevent these young girls from suffering so much trauma? 🙏

😔 u know imma defend joe campbell here... i dont think hes a bad guy he just got caught up in some weird circumstances maybe he was abused by someone too, or maybe he was just really naive about the rules 🤷‍♂️. these women r saying he abused them, but what if it were the other way around? what if they r the ones who did the abusing? i mean, think about it, kerri jackson and lisa ball are 53 and 56 now, that's some crazy stuff going on in their brains 🤯. we dont no the whole story here, maybe joe campbell is innocent, or maybe he just needs more therapy or something 😊.

OMG, I'm so emotional thinking about these girls and what they went through 🤕💔. It's insane that they were ignored by people who are supposed to be helping them. Like, isn't there someone who should've taken Lisa Ball's complaint seriously when she was just a teen mom? And 9 years old?! 🙈 This is so not okay and it's good that these women are finally speaking out 💪.

I also feel bad for Kerri Jackson, she's had to deal with this trauma for decades and I can only imagine how hard it must be for her to relive all those memories 😔. And the fact that Joe Campbell has a whole reputation as a respected pastor is just mind-blowing 🤯. Like, what kind of church turns out to have a serial abuser at its helm?

It's awesome that NBC News is investigating this further and I hope they can bring some justice to these survivors 💥. This case is not just about Campbell, it's about the system failing them and that needs to change 🤝.

Man, these stories are heartbreaking 🤕. You feel like you're watching a time capsule play out right before your eyes, where you can see how institutional failures and societal norms enabled this guy to think he was above the law. I mean, nine-year-old Lisa Ball, being invited to live with him after becoming a teen mom? That's messed up 🤯.

And it's crazy that these women had their voices ignored for so long. I feel like we're still seeing the impact of that today – how we treat survivors is still so often inadequate, and that's just not okay 😔.

But what's also striking is how this case feels like a moment of reckoning. Like, we're finally acknowledging the harm that was done to these women, and that's taking courage and strength. And with nine other people coming forward, it's clear that this guy wasn't an isolated incident – he was part of a larger problem.

As for Campbell's silence outside the courtroom? It just speaks volumes 🗣️. The fact that he hasn't even entered a plea or spoken up about his own innocence... it's like he's trying to avoid accountability, and that's not okay at all. If convicted, he faces life in prison – let him face the consequences of his actions.

I'm thinking about these four women standing outside the courtroom, you know? They're like, finally being heard, I guess. It's been months since Campbell was arrested, but now they're getting to see some justice come to pass. I feel bad for them, 'cause what happened to them is just... wrong 😔.

I mean, can you imagine if someone did that to your sister or daughter? Or like, to you when you were a kid? It's just not right. These women have been through so much, and they deserve to see some consequences for Campbell's actions. I hope he gets what's coming to him, but at the same time, I hope these women get the support and help they need to move on with their lives 💕.

It's crazy that it took all this time for them to speak out, but I guess sometimes you gotta wait for the right moment to do so. Now that they're speaking out, I'm hoping it'll help other people who might be going through something similar come forward and get the help they need 🤞.

🤕 my heart just breaks thinkin about these young girls bein 9 yrs old when dis happened & Campbell was like a trusted figure in their lives 🤝 he had power over them & abused that trust in the worst way possible 😱 it's unbelievable how many times they reported it to nobody who matters, even back then 💔 and now look at 'em standin up for themselves, finally gettin some closure 👍 Campbell's silence is deafening, sayin nothin' ain't gonna make dis go away 🚫 the justice system is slow but I hope he gets what's comin' to him 💥 these survivors deserve so much better than bein ignored or shamed 4 years after it happened 👯‍♀️

omg did u see those 4 women outside the court? they finally got some kinda closure 😭🤗 i feel so bad for lisa ball & kerri jackson they went thru hell as teens & no one believed them 🙅‍♀️ it's wild that joe campbell's lawyer ain't sayin' shit either, like what's he hidin'? 💁‍♂️ life in prison if he gets convicted tho, i hope justice is served ⚖️ the fact that 9 other ppl came forward with similar allegations is crazy 😲

Umm... I don't know if I agree with this whole thing 🤔. I mean, the pastor should definitely get in trouble, but do we really need to expose all these old secrets? It's like, yeah, he messed up, but did it have to be made public? My friend's cousin was involved with a similar church back in the day and they just kinda... moved on 🙅‍♀️. Also, what if some of those other people who came forward were just trying to get attention or something? We don't know all the facts yet 🤷‍♀️.

And another thing, I don't think it's cool that the women are still reliving this trauma by speaking out now ⏰. Can't they just have closure and move on already? I mean, I'm glad they're finding their voice and stuff, but can't we just focus on healing instead of airing all this grime in public 🚮.

Oh wait, no... I take it back 💁‍♀️. I totally think these women should be believed and supported 🤗. I was just thinking about the what-ifs and maybe being too cautious ⏰. But seriously, if someone hurt you like that, you deserve justice and to be heard 👊.

😔👥 You know what's wild? We're living in a world where these kinda things are finally getting the attention they deserve... like decades later! 🤯 I mean, think about it. These women were traumatized as kids and their voices were silenced or ignored by people who were supposed to help them. It's heartbreaking. But at least now, they're not just "little girls anymore" being pushed aside and forgotten. They're standing tall, demanding justice and accountability for what happened to them.

It's also crazy to see how far this case has gone. From a small town in Oklahoma to a national investigation by NBC News... it's like the whole world is watching now. 🌎 I just hope that Campbell gets what he deserves, but more importantly, I hope that these women get the closure and healing they need. They deserve it! 💖 And let's not forget about all the other survivors who are coming forward, sharing their stories... it's a movement, people! 🚀

🤔 I think its amazing how those 4 women are finally being heard and believed after all these years 🌟 They deserve every bit of justice they're fighting for 💪 The fact that pastor Campbell is remaining silent says it all, he's not taking responsibility for his actions 👎 Life in prison should be on the table for him if convicted ⚖️ Its great to see NBC News investigating these allegations and shedding light on this dark history 📰 Those 9 other men who came forward with similar stories of abuse deserve their own justice too 💯 We can't just focus on one case, we need to make sure all survivors are supported and believed 🤝 #JusticeForSurvivors #BelieveTheWomen #AccountabilityMatters

This case is giving me chills 🤯! I mean, can you even imagine being 9 years old and someone you trusted, like a pastor, does you such harm? It's not just about the abuse itself, but the fact that it happened in a place of safety and supposed refuge. The fact that these women had to go through all this trauma as teenagers and were ignored by authorities is just heartbreaking 😭.

It's also really interesting to see how the community is coming together to support them now. I mean, we're talking about a guy who was once a respected figure in a big church organization 🤔. It's like, what even happens when someone does this kind of thing? How do they get away with it for so long?

I'm also kinda curious about the whole investigation thing 🕵️‍♀️. Are there more people coming forward? Is there gonna be some real accountability here?

🤔 I gotta say, pastor Campbell's lack of response in court was super telling... 👀 He's basically just letting his fate be decided while these women are finally getting the closure they deserve 🙏 After all the years of silence, it's amazing that they're speaking out now 💪 The fact that he used to be a prominent figure in the Assemblies of God church is wild... like, how does that happen? 😲 And nine other people coming forward with similar allegations just shows how widespread this abuse was 🤯 It's not just about Campbell, it's about all the others who were affected by his actions 💔 The hearing might be a turning point for these women, but I think it's also a wake-up call for all of us to take a closer look at our own communities and make sure we're supporting survivors instead of enabling perpetrators 🤝
