South Station Bus Terminal Expansion Brings Increased Capacity and Easier Connections.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has finally unveiled its highly anticipated expansion of the South Station Bus Terminal, boasting a new intercity bus concourse that adds 12 more docks. According to transit officials, this development will significantly boost capacity by over 50 percent, providing travelers with smoother connections to trains and subways.
The new terminal is part of the South Station Air Rights Project, which began in January 2020. The project's completion follows the recent opening of the new South Station Tower, finished in September. While passenger numbers have dropped from around 14,000 per day in 2019 to about 10,000 daily travelers, officials claim that the expanded terminal will accommodate more bus lines and departures.
Two major carriers, FlixBus and Greyhound, now have three additional docks each, adding up to a combined total of ten docking stations. OurBus continues to operate curbside services for approximately ten routes. However, travelers are still advised to adjust their schedules due to ongoing construction on new elevators, escalators, and stairs linking the bus terminal to the train platforms.
Travelers should be prepared for an extra five to 10 minutes of waiting time as they adapt to the new layout and construction zones. When boarding, it's crucial to check the updated track numbers, as some trains may now use different tracks than before.
The expanded South Station Bus Terminal offers a more convenient experience for commuters, with plans to introduce additional retail spaces and dining options next year.
