However, this shift towards more stringent standards is being resisted by some, including the rollback of Biden-era regulations last year. Despite the politics, cities and states can take a lead in setting their own standards for cleanup, even if that means going against federal guidelines.

The story of East Omaha’s lead contamination is one of systemic failure – a failure to prioritize public health over cost savings, and to address the ongoing legacy of industrial pollution.
