A 10p masterpiece! The golden age of crisp packet design, from Chipsticks to Frazzles to Hedgehogs

For many of us, the mere sight of a vintage crisp packet can evoke memories of our childhood. The humble snack that once brought us joy now holds nostalgic value for adults who grew up with these tasty treats. From smoky spider flavor Monster Munch to Bovril crisps, the retro designs on these packs have become an integral part of British pop culture.

UK Crisp Packets 1970-2000 is a testament to this golden era of crisp packaging design. The book, compiled by artist and collector Chris Packet, showcases a staggering array of designs that span decades and styles. You'll find iconic brands like Chipsticks, Frazzles, and Snaps, as well as lesser-known regional favorites and limited-edition TV specials featuring beloved characters from our childhoods.

The diversity of designs in this book is awe-inspiring, with everything from straightforward, colorful graphics to more complex, 3D models. Take, for example, the classic Discos packet, whose wavy lines and sharp design evoke a bygone era of retro futurism. Or consider the space-themed Space Raiders packet, its bold colors and alien characters instantly recognizable as a product of the 1980s.

What drives Chris Packet's passion project is his desire to celebrate the artistry behind these iconic designs. As someone with a background in graffiti and art, he's fascinated by the lettering, illustrations, cartoons, and styles that went into creating each packet. He cites the original Space Raiders design by Brett Ewins as a prime example of this artistry, noting how modern packets have lost much of their visual flair.

The book is not just a nostalgic trip; it also serves as a cultural artifact, documenting a pivotal moment in British snack food history. The introduction by Professor Annebella Pollen highlights the significance of these retro packets in capturing the essence of childhood culture and our relationship with snacks during this period.

UK Crisp Packets 1970-2000 is more than just a nostalgic collection – it's a time capsule that reminds us of the joy, simplicity, and freedom of our youth. As we gaze upon the colorful designs on these vintage packets, we're reminded that even in the most mundane objects lies the power to evoke memories and emotions that stay with us long after they're gone.

🤯 I'm still trying to wrap my head around how much nostalgia is packed into this book! 📚 The attention to detail on those retro designs is insane, it's like looking at a time capsule of 70s and 80s pop culture. I mean, who knew that something as simple as a packet of crisps could be so iconic? 😂 And it's not just about the aesthetics, it's also about the story behind each design. Chris Packet has really done his research to bring this collection together, from the typography to the illustrations... it's all just so fascinating! 📸 I can already imagine this book being a hit with collectors and enthusiasts alike. 💸

I'm totally stoked about this book, but at the same time, I think it's kinda overrated 🤔... like, what's up with all these vintage crisp packets? They just seem so... old-school 🎨. I mean, don't get me wrong, some of those designs are really rad, but others look like they belong in a bad 80s time capsule 🕳️. And, honestly, have you seen the size of some of these packets? Like, who needs to eat that much crisps at once? 😂 Still, I guess it's cool to see all these nostalgic designs together in one place... and Chris Packet seems like a pretty talented artist 👍. But, does this book really need an intro by Professor Annebella Pollen? Shouldn't the art speak for itself? 🤷‍♀️

omg have you seen those retro video games consoles from the 80s? like, my dad's old NES is still working btw i was trying to figure out why it wouldn't turn on and it turns out the power cord was just loose lol what's the deal with nostalgic things anyway? one minute they're making us feel all warm fuzzy inside and the next we're still talking about them years later

This book is so cool 🤩 I mean, who doesn't love looking back at old-school snack packs? The pics of those retro designs are like a blast from the past - instantly makes me wanna dig through my childhood stash for old chip bags and crisps. And yeah, it's not just about nostalgia, but also showcases some sick design skills that were hidden behind all those colorful graphics 👍

I'm loving this new book on retro crisp packets in the UK 🍿👀 They really have some iconic designs from back in the day... I mean, who can forget those giant spider flavor Monster Munch packets? 😂 It's crazy how much thought and art went into designing these little packs. I think what's really cool is that it's not just about nostalgia, but also about preserving a part of British pop culture history 🎨 The designs are like time capsules, holding memories of our childhoods for us to cherish 💭
