A new approach to a Covid-19 nasal vaccine shows early promise | CNN

Researchers in Germany claim to have made significant progress in the development of a nasal Covid-19 vaccine that can effectively shut down the virus's infection in the nose and throat. In experiments conducted on hamsters, two doses of the live but weakened vaccine successfully blocked the virus from replicating itself in the animals' upper airways, achieving "sterilizing immunity" and preventing illness.

The novel approach uses a weakened form of the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, which is then used to prime the immune system. This method has been studied for decades, dating back to the 1870s when scientists developed vaccines against anthrax and rabies using similar techniques.

According to the researchers, the nasal vaccine offers several advantages over existing Covid-19 vaccines. It can be administered through the nose, making it easier to target the upper airways where the virus typically enters the body. Additionally, this approach may provide better protection against new variants of the virus that have emerged in recent times.

In the hamster studies, two doses of the live but weakened nasal vaccine created a stronger immune response compared to other vaccines tested, including mRNA-based and adenovirus-delivered options. The researchers believe that the vaccine's effectiveness is due to its ability to mimic natural infection closely, allowing it to generate immunity against a wider range of targets.

However, the development of this vaccine still faces several challenges before it can be approved for human use. The researchers are currently working on phase I clinical trials with the help of a Swiss company called RocketVax. While other nasal vaccines have reached late-stage testing in humans, some experts caution that more work is needed to fully understand their effectiveness.

One concern is that respiratory infections have proven to be tough targets for inhaled vaccines, and it remains to be seen whether this approach will be effective in humans. Nonetheless, the progress made by German researchers offers hope for a new type of Covid-19 vaccine that could provide better protection against the virus.

🤞 This is some good news finally! I mean, we've been hearing about vaccines for so long now and it's nice to see some real progress being made. I'm all for trying out new approaches like this one - it's not like we haven't tried everything else already 😅. And if it can be administered through the nose, that's a total game-changer. Less pain, less hassle... win-win! 💉 Of course, there are still some risks involved and more trials need to be done before it's approved for human use, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here 🙅‍♂️. A bit more research never hurt anyone, right? 👍

🤔 This is super interesting! I've been hearing about mRNA-based vaccines for ages and it's cool to see someone trying a different approach 🙌. The fact that this nasal vaccine can target the upper airways where the virus enters the body makes total sense to me 👍. And the idea of sterilizing immunity, where the vaccine basically stops the virus from replicating itself? Mind blown 💥! I'm curious to see how this translates to human trials and whether it'll be effective against those new variants 🤝🏻

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s crazy how they went back to using this old technique from the 1870s and still managed to make progress on the nasal Covid-19 vaccine 🤯! It's like, who knew that after all these years, scientists would come up with something new and effective. I mean, the idea of targeting the upper airways where the virus enters is genius 💡. The fact that it can be administered through the nose makes it way more convenient than those other vaccines 🤸‍♀️. Fingers crossed they can make it work for humans too! This could be a game-changer for Covid-19, especially with all these new variants popping up 💉.

🌟 I'm so stoked to hear about this nasal Covid-19 vaccine! It's like, we've been waiting for years for something like this 😅. The fact that it can be administered through the nose makes total sense, considering how our bodies naturally fight off infections in the upper airways. And if it's more effective than other vaccines out there? That's just awesome! 💯 I'm not going to lie, though - I do have some concerns about its effectiveness in humans... but for now, let's celebrate this progress and hope that we're one step closer to beating Covid-19 once and for all 🌈💪

idk about this nasal vaccine, seems like a decent idea tho 🤔... but how reliable is it gonna be in real life? got any sources on those hamster tests? what's the difference between "sterilizing immunity" and actual sterilization lol 😂? cant just claim to have made progress without some serious proof 📊.

🤔 This is like totally awesome news! I've been saying this for ages - we need a vaccine that targets the real entry point of the virus (aka our nose and throat) instead of just sticking needles in our arms 💉👏. I mean, it's crazy that scientists have been working on this concept since the 1870s already 🤓! And to think we're finally seeing progress with this nasal vaccine... it gives me hope that we'll get a game-changer soon 💪! The fact that it can create "sterilizing immunity" and target new variants of the virus is like, totally promising 🎉! Of course, there are still challenges to overcome before it's approved for human use, but I'm all for keeping an eye on this one 👀.

🤔 This is crazy! A nasal vaccine that can actually shut down the virus before it takes hold? That's like something out of a sci-fi movie. I'm not surprised it worked in hamsters, but humans are a different story. Those respiratory infections have been tough to crack, so I'll believe it when I see the results of those phase I clinical trials. Still, this is some cool tech and I'd love to know more about how it's going to be mass-produced and what kind of protection it offers against new variants.

I'm so stoked to hear about this new nasal Covid-19 vaccine 🤩! I mean, who wouldn't want a vaccine that's specifically designed to target the upper airways where the virus likes to hang out? It makes total sense that it could provide better protection against those new variants that are constantly popping up.

I remember when my grandma was struggling with Covid back in 2020... she had this awful stuff going on in her sinuses and it just made her so miserable 🤒. If a vaccine like this one became available, it would've been a total game-changer for people who are already dealing with respiratory issues.

Of course, I know there's still some work to be done before it's approved for human use... but the fact that they're already in phase I clinical trials is super promising 🚀. Fingers crossed that this vaccine could become a reality and help keep us all safe from Covid! 💪

😊 This is amazing news! I've been waiting for something like this for ages 🤞. A nasal vaccine that can effectively stop Covid from replicating in our noses and throats? It's like we're talking about a game-changer here 🎮. The fact that it uses a weakened form of the virus to prime our immune system is genius 💡. I just hope they can get this one right and make it safe for humans soon 🤞. We need all the help we can get, especially with those new variants popping up left and right 🚨. Fingers crossed that this will bring us some real relief from Covid's grip 🤕.

OMG u guys ! I'm so hyped about this nasal Covid-19 vaccine tho 🤩! I've been following the development and it's crazy to think that they're using a weakened form of the coronavirus to prime the immune system . I have to admit, I was skeptical at first but now I'm like super optimistic about its effectiveness 💪! The fact that it can be administered through the nose is so cool - no more injections or needles for me 🙅‍♀️. And the idea that it might provide better protection against new variants of the virus that have emerged is just mind-blowing 🤯. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this vaccine will make a difference and help us move past this pandemic . Fingers crossed that we'll see this in use soon too, so I can finally feel safe going out again 😅👣

🤯 I mean, think about it... if they can get it right with hamsters then why not humans?! 🐹 It's crazy how much more effective this nasal vaccine is compared to the others out there. And let's be real, who hasn't had some bad stuff stuck up their nose at some point? 😂 So why not target the virus directly in the first place?! The fact that it can create a stronger immune response than other vaccines is mind-blowing too. It just goes to show you don't need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to vaccine tech... we already knew how to do this stuff back in the 1870s 🤓

I'm seeing a lot of hype about this new nasal Covid-19 vaccine 🤔 and I gotta say, it's kinda interesting. The fact that they're using a weakened form of the coronavirus to prime the immune system is pretty cool. But we gotta remember that hamsters aren't humans, so let's not get too excited just yet 🐭.

I think what I love most about this approach is that it's trying to target the upper airways where the virus typically enters the body. That makes sense, right? And if it can provide better protection against new variants of the virus, that's a major win 💪.

But, as with any vaccine, there are gonna be challenges to overcome before it hits the market. Like, what about the respiratory system being tough targets for inhaled vaccines? That's something we need to keep an eye on 🤞.

Overall, I'm keeping an open mind about this new vaccine. Fingers crossed that it'll live up to the hype 😊.

I'm low-key excited about this nasal Covid-19 vaccine news 🤫... I mean, who wouldn't want to avoid getting sick all the time? But seriously, the fact that it's been tested on hamsters and shown promising results is a big deal 💉. The idea of being able to target the upper airways with just one dose makes sense - our noses are like, super entry points for viruses right? 🤢

I'm also loving that they're using a weakened form of the coronavirus to prime the immune system... it's all about finding that sweet spot between being effective and not triggering a full-blown infection 🌟. Of course, we gotta wait until phase I clinical trials are done and all that jazz before we can get our hands on this vaccine 💊.

But honestly, if this nasal vaccine thing pans out, it could be a game-changer for people who have trouble with traditional vaccines or just want an extra layer of protection 🤝. Fingers crossed they can iron out the kinks and make it available to us soon 👍!

🤔 I'm actually kinda stoked about this nasal Covid-19 vaccine development 🎉, but like, let's keep it real here... we've been hearing about some crazy stuff in science since the 1870s and not much has changed 😅. It's always exciting when researchers think they've got something new, but until we see those human trials go down without any major hiccups, I'll just be over here holding my breath 🤯. And yeah, it's cool that this vaccine might offer better protection against new variants of the virus... but can we talk about how long has it been since we've seen a new Covid-19 "variant" come along? 😴 It feels like time was already passing in slow motion before vaccines existed 💨. On the bright side, if they do manage to make this nasal vaccine work 🤞, it's always awesome to see scientists get creative with their approaches... even if it means going back on some old ideas 😊.

I'm intrigued by this new nasal Covid-19 vaccine 💉🤔. If it works out, it'll be game-changer for those who struggle with administering traditional vaccines 🏥💊. And since it targets the nose and throat, it might just give us an edge against new variants 🦠👍. I mean, we've been hearing about how effective natural infection can be in generating immunity... this approach seems like a solid way to tap into that 💪. Of course, there are still some hurdles to overcome before it's approved for human use, but I think the potential is huge 🌟.

🤔 I think its kinda cool that German researchers are trying out a nasal Covid-19 vaccine. It makes sense that it would target the upper airways where the virus usually enters, and I'm glad to hear they're getting decent results in their hamster tests 👍. The fact that it's using a weakened but live form of the coronavirus is interesting too - I guess its like training your immune system to fight off the real deal 💪.

I also appreciate how this vaccine can potentially offer better protection against new variants of Covid-19 🤝. I mean, we're still dealing with mutations and evasions from existing vaccines, so any advantage counts 🙌. Of course, there are still some challenges ahead, like human trials and all that jazz 🔬.

Still, it's awesome to see scientists trying out innovative approaches like this 💡. Who knows, maybe one day we'll have a vaccine that can shut down the virus before it even takes hold 🎯. Fingers crossed for that! 👍

idk how long it'll take for them to get this thing approved but if its true we might be able to ditch the needles altogether lol 🤣💉 nasal vaccine is def more convenient and targeted which is a win in my books 👍 gotta love innovation 💡 what do u think about getting vaccinated via nose tho? sounds kinda weird but idk maybe its a future we'll get used to 😂
