Abandoned basset hound rescued by couple in Kensington was 'emaciated' and 'dying,' PSPCA says

Heartbreaking Rescue: Abandoned Basset Hound Found near Railroad Tracks

A disturbing discovery was made by a couple in Kensington earlier this month when they stumbled upon an emaciated basset hound, Fred, near railroad tracks. The dog's dire condition left animal welfare experts shaken.

Upon arrival at the Pennsylvania SPCA headquarters, Fred was found to be in critical state, with dull eyes and a body temperature that refused to register on the thermometer, indicating he was so cold it couldn't detect even the slightest change. His once-healthy coat had become matted with filth, feces, and debris, while his dehydration had left him weak and struggling to stay alive.

Veterinarians at the PSPCA quickly sprang into action, using heating pads, warming blankets, and warm IV fluids to stabilize Fred's body temperature and combat his severe dehydration. However, they soon realized that his extreme starvation meant that even normal food portions were too much for his weakened body to handle.

A heartbreaking rescue was indeed a second chance of life, and it highlights the urgent need for compassionate action from concerned members of society. The PSPCA emphasized that no one should turn away from an animal in distress, whether it's by reporting suspicious activities, contacting authorities, or offering safe haven.

Fred is now slowly regaining weight under the care of the PSPCA and will be available for adoption in the coming weeks. His case serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of neglect on animals and underscores the importance of vigilance and empathy towards all creatures.

aww poor fred 🐶😔 i mean, can u believe he was just chillin' near railroad tracks & no one thought to check on him? it's crazy how animals can get so neglected 🤯 & then we have places like the PSPCA that come in to save their lives ❤️. i'm sure it wasn't an easy road for Fred to recover, but now he's getting the care he needs & eventually gonna find a forever home 🏠🐾. let this be a reminder to all of us to keep an eye out for animals in distress & report any suspicious activities 👀💕

🐶💔 I'm so glad Fred is getting the help he needs, but it's mind-boggling that someone could abandon him like that. I mean, can you imagine being in his paws for hours, maybe even days, without food or water? It's just heartbreaking. The PSPCA did an amazing job, though - those vets are heroes 🙌. And now we get to give Fred a second chance at life... it's a beautiful thing. I think we all need to be more mindful of the creatures around us and look out for each other (and them too) 🐾❤️

Ugh, this poor pup 🐶😔 is just a heartbreaking reminder that some people have no idea how to care for our furry friends 🙅‍♂️ I mean, can you imagine leaving someone, even an animal, to starve like that? It's just awful 😨. But on the bright side, it's amazing what those wonderful folks at the PSPCA did to save Fred's life ❤️ They're literally angels in disguise! The fact that they're now taking care of him and giving him a second chance is just so beautiful 🌈 And you know what's even more inspiring? The public's response – people are actually coming forward to report suspicious activities and offer help 💪 It shows that there are still good people out there who care about animal welfare 🐾👍

OMG, that poor basset hound Fred 🐶😩 is literally one lucky dog! I mean, can you even imagine being found like that near railroad tracks? It's a miracle he made it out alive, tbh 🙏. I'm glad the PSPCA was there to save him, but it's also super disheartening to see how neglected animals are these days 🤕. We need more people to look out for each other (and our furry friends 🐾) and report any suspicious activity. It's heartbreaking to think that Fred was living like that before he was found... anyway, I'm just glad he's on the road to recovery 🌞!

I'm literally shaking thinking about poor Fred 🐾😔. I mean, can you imagine being so hungry you can't even eat? It's heartbreaking that someone left him just sitting there near railroad tracks, no food, no water... 🤢 He's one lucky pup to have been found by those amazing people who rescued him. I think we should all be more aware of animal neglect and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. We can't turn a blind eye if we see an animal in distress 💡. Poor Fred is on the road to recovery, but it's devastating that he was left like that in the first place 🤷‍♀️.

just saw this story about the abandoned basset hound near railroad tracks 🐶😔 its so sad that someone would leave a poor dog like fred just wandering around in the cold, matted with dirt and stuff...the pscca did an amazing job saving him tho 🙏 i think we need more people to step up and help animals in distress, not just report suspicious activity but also actually take action 💕

Ugh, this is literally breaking my heart 🐾😭. I mean, who do we turn to if they're left like that?! It's not just the poor pup's life that's at stake but also his chances of finding a loving home 🙏. I'm so glad those animal welfare folks are on it 24/7, providing him with love and care 💕. But what's really sad is how this happened in the first place - abandoned and left to fend for himself near railroad tracks 🚂😳. The PSPCA is doing an amazing job, but we should all be keeping our eyes peeled for stray animals and taking action if we see them in distress 🌟👀. Fred's story is a harsh reminder of how easily life can slip away, and it's up to us to make sure that doesn't happen again 💕.

I don't usually comment but... 😔 it's heartbreaking to think that someone would abandon an animal like Fred, who was just trying to survive near railroad tracks 🚂. I mean, can you imagine being left like that with no food or water? It's a miracle he made it out alive 💪. The PSPCA is doing everything they can to help him now, but I think we all need to be more aware of animal welfare and report any suspicious activity if we see something fishy 🐕💡.

😔 That poor basset hound's story is just heartbreaking. I mean, can you imagine being so neglected that you're left to starve right next to train tracks? It's a miracle he's alive at all 🙏. We need more people to look out for these animals and report suspicious situations. Just because they don't have a "home" like us does not mean they shouldn't be treated with kindness ❤️. Fred's story is a sad reminder of how quickly things can go wrong when we're not looking out for each other – or in this case, for our furry friends 🐾.

omg this story broke my heart 🤕, i remember when my grandma used to take me to the shelter whenever she'd seen a stray dog or cat wandering around, she'd always make sure they got food and a warm place to sleep... it's just so sad that some poor soul forgot about fred like he was nothing more than trash 🚮. my parents had this one friend growing up whose dog used to get left outside in the cold for hours on end, it was heartbreaking... anyway i'm glad the PSPCA stepped in and saved fred, but you're right we need to do more as a community to look out for these poor animals 🐾💕.

oh man, that poor basset hound 🐶😔 he's been through so much! but you know what? it's a miracle he made it out alive! i mean, can you even imagine walking by him near those railroad tracks with no one to care? but thankfully some amazing humans stumbled upon him and saved his life ❤️. it's crazy how quickly things can go from bad to good with just a little love & care. and now fred's gonna find a forever home 🏠, that's the best feeling ever! we should all take a page out of this rescue story and be more aware of those in need around us, whether they're humans or animals 🐾💕.

omg this poor guy's condition is literally heartbreaking lol i'm so glad the PSPCA stepped in ASAP 😩🐶 can't believe someone would abandon a dog like that near railroad tracks where's their heart?! 🤷‍♂️ anyway gotta give credit to the couple who found him & reported it, they're total angels 👏 and idk what's more disturbing, the fact that fred was abandoned or how much he had to suffer before being found 😭 anyhoo, lets get fred some love & a forever home ASAP! 🐾❤️ https://www.pennyspca.org/story/fred-the-basset-hound-abandoned-near-railroad-tracks/ 👍

its so heartbreaking what happened to that poor basset hound, he was literally living like trash near railroad tracks u feel bad for him & glad his human found him tho i hope more ppl take action if they see any animal in distress, report it ASAP 🐾💕

man this is so sad i feel like we're living in a world where some poor animals are being treated like trash 🐕😩 it's heartbreaking that fred was left to suffer like that near railroad tracks just because someone didn't care about him anymore i'm glad the PSPCA stepped in and saved his life, but it's also a huge red flag for animal welfare in our community we need more people to take responsibility and look out for each other... or should i say, look out for those who can't speak up for themselves 🤷‍♂️

Ugh, can't believe this poor pup was left to suffer like that 🐾😱. I mean, who leaves an animal just lying around by the railroad tracks? It's not like it's a wild animal or anything, they know better. And the PSPCA is amazing for taking him in and giving him a second chance, but it's crazy how bad his condition was...I can barely look at pictures of him 🤢. We need more people to be aware of this stuff and report suspicious activity if they see something fishy 💡. Just heartbreaking what he went through and I hope all the attention gets him lots of love (and not too much food at first, poor guy needs to pace himself 🐶).

OMG, I'm literally shaking right now thinking about poor Fred 🐾😩. I mean, can you even imagine being in that situation? One minute he's just chillin' near the tracks, and the next he's abandoned to death's door... it's just heartbreaking 😭. And the PSPCA is doing an amazing job of giving him a second chance, but honestly, it should be the norm, not some emergency rescue mission 🙏. Like, why can't we all just take responsibility for our furry friends and keep them safe? It's not rocket science! 🚀 We need more people like those who found Fred to report suspicious activities and step up when animals are in distress. Let's get that compassion train rolling, fam! 💪

🐾😩 I'm literally shaking thinking about poor Fred's situation... how someone could just leave him like that by the railroad tracks? 🚂 It's heartbreaking to see a beautiful soul like that, reduced to nothing but a shadow of his former self. We need more people to step up and be those concerned members of society, checking in on each other (and our furry friends!) regularly. No animal should have to go through what Fred went through - it's just not right! 🙏 Let's make sure everyone knows that every single creature deserves compassion and love ❤️

I'm so worried about poor Fred 🐶😔. I mean, can you even imagine being found like that near railroad tracks? It's just horrific what people can do to these innocent animals. The PSPCA did an amazing job saving him, but it's a shame he had to go through all that. His story is a sad reminder of how we need to look out for each other - two-legged and four-legged alike 🐾❤️. We've got to be more vigilant and compassionate towards all creatures. I'm sure Fred will find his forever home soon, but it's heartbreaking to think about what he went through 💔
