Bloomingdale starts redevelopment of old Stratford Square Mall

Bloomingdale's Revitalization Efforts Take Shape as $78 Million Mixed-Use Development Unfolds.

The village of Bloomingdale is breathing new life into its downtown area with the redevelopment of the former Stratford Square Mall, a sprawling complex that once anchored the local retail scene. The ambitious project, dubbed "The Grove," promises to transform 60 acres of vacant land into a vibrant mixed-use district filled with restaurants, entertainment options, and housing.

Led by Mayor Franco Coladipietro, who hopes to recreate the sense of community that Stratford Square once fostered, Bloomingdale's vision for The Grove focuses on creating a welcoming space where residents can interact and engage. "We want the best users, the best uses that we can find to complement what our vision is for The Grove and to compliment our community as well," Coladipietro said.

The development's first tenant, Bloomingdale Yard, a 100,000-square-foot indoor sports and family recreation center, is set to open in 2027. The venue will offer year-round programming for children and adults, including sports leagues, training facilities, and an after-school sports program. A full-service childcare center, birthday party packages, and a children's playroom are also on the menu.

Coladipietro sees Bloomingdale Yard as the key to attracting visitors to The Grove, which will host events like concerts and farmers markets. Utility infrastructure work began in early January, with construction of roads, parking areas, lawn, and water features slated for late spring or early summer.

In terms of design, The Grove's site plans feature a picturesque man-made lake flanked by restaurants, event lawns, retail spaces, luxury residences, and ample parking. Local architects Gravity Architecture & Design have crafted the vision, in partnership with Segovia Partners, Peak Construction Corp., and Christopher B. Burke Engineering.

As Bloomingdale looks to revitalize its downtown area, officials are taking a cue from other local malls that have successfully transformed into mixed-use developments. Niles is slated to demolish its Golf Mill Shopping Center, replacing it with a mixed-use town center, while Aurora is transforming the Fox Valley Mall's sprawling complex into luxury apartments.

With $78 million at stake and significant investment riding on The Grove's success, Coladipietro hopes to create a destination that brings new life to Bloomingdale. "What’s most important for me is for people to interact with the property again," he said.

🀩 So I'm checking the latest stats on economic growth in the US and it's actually pretty cool! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, retail sales are up 4.2% YoY in Q1 2025 πŸ“ˆ. And with Bloomingdale's $78 million investment in The Grove, I'd say we're looking at a potential boost in local GDP by 3-4% πŸ’Έ.

Also, have you seen the latest charts on mixed-use developments? It's crazy how they've been popping up all over the country πŸ—ΊοΈ. I mean, just look at Niles' Golf Mill Shopping Center conversion - it went from 85% vacancy to 95% occupancy in just two years! πŸ“Š That's some serious revitalization magic right there.

And let's not forget about the community aspect of The Grove. With its focus on family-friendly activities and events, I'm hoping we'll see a significant increase in foot traffic for local businesses πŸ‘₯. It's gonna be a game-changer for Bloomingdale!

By the way, did you know that the average American spends around 6 hours per week shopping? πŸ›οΈ That's a lot of time spent on retail therapy! But seriously, I think The Grove has the potential to turn Bloomingdale into a major destination spot.

Lastly, here are some fun stats about urban planning:

* The average person walks 5,000 miles per year (compared to 3,000 in 1990) πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ
* Cities with more green spaces see an average increase of 2.4% in property values 🌳
* Urban parks can reduce crime rates by up to 21% and improve air quality by up to 22% 🏞️

Anyway, just thought I'd share some fun facts while we wait for The Grove's grand opening! 😊

I'm kinda excited about this new project in Bloomingdale... I mean, it sounds like they're trying to recreate some of the magic from Stratford Square Mall 🀩. But what's up with the timeline? First, it's 2027 and then suddenly there are events and farmers markets? Like, how does that work? Shouldn't we have a few more years to get this whole thing together before we're expecting crowds?

And can we talk about the design for a sec? I love the idea of a man-made lake flanked by restaurants, but what's going on with the housing part? Are they gonna make it super affordable or just another place for rich people to live? I'm all for revitalizing downtown areas, but let's make sure this isn't just another example of gentrification πŸ€”.

Oh wait, I forgot... Niles and Aurora are doing something similar too... So maybe this is the new wave of mixed-use developments? I'm kinda curious to see how it plays out...

I cant believe how things have changed around here πŸ™„. Back in my day we used to shop at the local mall and actually talk to people, not just stare at our phones πŸ˜‚. This new development in Bloomingdale sounds like a great idea though, especially with that indoor sports center for kids. I mean who doesn't love a good game of basketball or soccer? πŸ€πŸˆ The addition of luxury residences is also a nice touch, I'm sure it'll bring in some new people to the area and help boost local businesses.

But you know what's really cool about this project? It's not just about making money, it's about creating a community. I love that the mayor is focusing on events like concerts and farmers markets, it sounds like he wants to make The Grove a place where people can actually hang out and have fun 🎡🌳. Let's hope it all comes together smoothly and doesn't cost too much 😬.

I'm excited to see how this project turns out and if it'll be a success. It's always great to see old malls get renovated and become something new and exciting again πŸ’Ό. Who knows, maybe one day I'll be able to show my grandkids around The Grove and say "back in my day..." 😊

I'm so down for this new project in Bloomingdale 🀩! It sounds like they're trying to bring back some of the community vibes from when Stratford Square was around, and I think that's a great idea. A sports center and childcare center? That's awesome for families with kids πŸ‹οΈβ€β™€οΈπŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦. And having events like concerts and farmers markets? That sounds like so much fun! πŸ˜„

I hope it all comes together smoothly and they reach their goal of making The Grove a destination spot. It'll be nice to have something new to explore in the area πŸ’‘.

I'm low-key hyped for this project! $78 million is a big deal and I'm sure it'll bring in some fresh faces (and spending power) to the area. That indoor sports center sounds like a total game-changer, especially if they can get kids off their screens and into actual sports. A community spot that encourages mingling? Sign me up! It's about time our downtown areas got a revamp, too - it's hard not to feel like we're stuck in the past when all these old malls are getting revamped into something new. Can't wait to see what The Grove has to offer

omg can u believe they're spending 78 million on this project?? like whoa i remember when stratford square mall was still around and it was always super crowded back in the day 🀯 maybe this new development will bring some life to bloomingdale but we'll have to wait and see if it's all just hype πŸ’Έ

i heard they're gonna have a lake and everything lol sounds like something out of a movie 🌊 but seriously though, a mixed-use district with restaurants, entertainment options, and housing sounds like a great idea for the community πŸ‘

🀩 This revitalization effort is gonna be lit! I'm super stoked about The Grove, it's gonna bring so much energy and vibes to downtown Bloomingdale. Who wouldn't want a picturesque man-made lake, sports rec center, and luxury residences all in one spot? It's like they're trying to create the ultimate community hub. πŸ’– And I love how they're incorporating events and farmers markets – it's all about fostering that sense of community and connection among residents! πŸŽ‰ Let's hope everything comes together smoothly and it becomes a huge success 🀞

I'm kinda skeptical about this whole thing πŸ€”. Like, what makes them think it's gonna work? They're basically taking a mall that was already struggling and turning it into a mixed-use development. It sounds like a lot of hype for not a lot of substance, you know? I mean, 60 acres is a huge space to fill with restaurants and entertainment options... how are they planning on making it all stick? And what's the point of having a bunch of luxury residences if there isn't even a decent public transportation system in place?

And let's be real, they're relying on one big tenant (Bloomingdale Yard) to make the whole thing happen. What happens when that tenant leaves or can't keep up with demand? They'll just be left with a bunch of empty spaces and a huge bill to pay πŸ€‘. I'm not saying it can't work, but I think they need to have a more solid plan in place before they start throwing all this money at it πŸ’Έ.

the idea of revamping an old mall into a mixed-use district is so cool πŸ‘Œ I think it's great that they're incorporating a sports center and a childcare center, that'll definitely make it a hub for families πŸ’ͺπŸΌπŸ‘§πŸ». The addition of a man-made lake and plenty of parking spots sounds like a win-win πŸŒ³πŸ’¨. hope it all comes together smoothly and creates a community vibe 🀞

I gotta say, I'm super stoked about what's happening in Bloomingdale right now 🀩. Like, who wouldn't want to hang out at a vibrant downtown area with restaurants, entertainment options, and housing? It's all about creating that sense of community, you know? And it sounds like the mayor is really on top of things - he's got a clear vision for what The Grove should be and is working hard to make it happen πŸ’ͺ.

And can we talk about the new sports center? 100,000 square feet indoors? That's gonna be lit! πŸ€ I mean, imagine being able to play basketball or soccer with your kids on the weekends - that sounds like a total game-changer for families. Plus, the fact that it'll have year-round programming and an after-school sports program is just amazing. It's not just about having a cool place to hang out, but also about providing opportunities for people to get active and meet new friends.

It's also really cool to see how The Grove is incorporating all these different elements - restaurants, event spaces, retail, luxury residences... it's like a mini-village! 🌳 And the design team is doing an amazing job of creating this picturesque man-made lake flanked by all these awesome features. I'm sure it'll be stunning when it's all done.

Overall, I think The Grove has huge potential to bring new life to Bloomingdale and make it a destination that people want to visit. Fingers crossed it all comes together smoothly! 🀞

I think this mixed-use development is gonna be huge for the village of Bloomingdale πŸ€‘. I mean, who doesn't want to hang out at a place that's got restaurants, entertainment options, and housing all in one spot? It's like they're trying to recreate that old Stratford Square vibe, but with even more amenities. And let me tell you, having a sports and family recreation center like Bloomingdale Yard on site is gonna be a game-changer for families. My grandkids would love that place! 🏞️ The man-made lake and event lawns are also a great touch - it's all about creating a welcoming space where people can come together. Fingers crossed they make it happen without too many hiccups...
