Coca-Cola reportedly abandons plans to sell Costa Coffee chain

Coca-Cola Drops Plan to Sell Costa Coffee Chain After Private Equity Firms Fail to Meet Expectations

In a surprise move, Coca-Cola has reportedly abandoned plans to sell its struggling coffee chain, Costa Coffee, after private equity firms failed to meet the company's expectations. The decision marks a significant shift in the company's strategy for the UK-based business, which had been seen as a key acquisition by Coca-Cola when it bought the chain for £3.9 billion in 2018.

Since then, Costa has struggled to gain traction due to rising costs, particularly higher coffee bean prices, and intense competition from other retailers on UK high streets. As a result, Coca-Cola was reportedly seeking a sale price of around £2 billion for the chain, which would have resulted in the company posting a multibillion-pound loss.

Several private equity firms had expressed interest in acquiring Costa Coffee, including TDR Capital and Bain Capital's special situations fund. However, the bids ultimately failed to meet Coca-Cola's expectations, leading the company to halt discussions with remaining bidders.

The decision comes as outgoing CEO James Quincey prepares to hand over the reins to Henrique Braun, who will become the new chief executive officer at the end of March. While Quincey had previously indicated that Costa was "not where we wanted it to be from an investment hypothesis point of view", he did not rule out selling the chain in the future.

Costa Coffee has faced significant challenges in recent years, including declining foot traffic and increased competition from upmarket rivals like Gail's Bakery and independent coffee shops. The company reported operating losses of £13.5 million in its latest financial year, citing "challenging conditions with soft footfall and growth of value-led competitors".

Coca-Cola and Costa Coffee did not comment on the report.

awww man, i feel for costa coffee 😔 they just wanted a good home but didn't find it 💔 those private equity firms were supposed to bring them back up on their feet 🤕 and now coke is all like "oh nope, we'll just keep it" 🙅‍♂️ i guess that's what happens when things get tough 😩 the foot traffic has been declining and the competition from other coffee shops is getting crazy ☕️ maybe they should've stuck to making yummy drinks instead of trying to own a cafe chain 🤷‍♀️

come on coke!! you were like literally begging to get rid of costa coffee and now they just drop the plan lol 2billion is a lot of cash tho 🤑 i feel for the private equity firms tho, they must've been thinking it was gonna be a sweet deal 🤔 maybe coke just decided to keep it inhouse instead? idk but i hope henrique braun brings some life to costa coffee 🔄

Dude, can't believe Coke gave up on Costa 😂. I mean, I get it, the coffee game's tough out there, but £2 billion is a pretty big ask for a business that's struggling to stay afloat 🤑. Those private equity firms must've been thinking they could turn it around and make a profit, but I guess Coke just didn't see that happening 💸.

I still think it's a shame because Costa was always my fave coffee spot when I was younger ☕️. But I guess times change and companies have to adapt. Maybe the new CEO will be able to shake things up and get Costa back on track 🤞. Fingers crossed for them! 👍

omg u gotta feel for costa coffee 🤕 they just got roasted by private equity firms 😬 & now coke's backing out of the sale deal 🚫 it's like, what were they thinking? 🙄 these 2 firms had their chances to get costa but failed miserably 💸 anyway, maybe this is an opportunity for costa to regroup & try again in the future 🤞 whoever takes over coke will have a hard time getting costa back on track 👍

I don't get why they're just gonna give up on it 🤷‍♂️ Like, £3.9 billion is a lot of money to just write off. What's going on with these private equity firms? Can't they come up with a better plan than this 😒. I mean, Costa Coffee has been struggling for years and now the whole company's gonna take a hit 'cause some firms can't make it work 💸. It's all about the benjamins, I guess 👊

I'm surprised they dropped the plan to sell 😊. It's been a tough road for Costa Coffee since Coke bought it. Rising costs and competition from other retailers really took their toll. I don't blame them for not wanting to lose more money, £2 billion is a pretty big hit 💸. Hopefully Henrique Braun can turn things around 🤞. Quincey seemed pretty down on the chain's prospects before he left too...but maybe there's still hope for Costa Coffee? 👀

I'm kinda surprised they're just gonna keep Costa, gotta be a tough nut to crack for private equity firms lol 🤔. I mean, £2 billion is a pretty steep price tag even if the numbers are bad. It's like trying to sell a lemon 💦. Don't get me wrong, I love a good cuppa and all, but this just shows how hard it can be to turn around a struggling business. What do u think? Should've just stuck with being a drink company 😐. Anyway, hope Braun does better than Quincey did 👍

🤔 just heard about Coca Cola dropping their plan to sell costa coffee chain and I'm thinking... maybe they were expecting a bit too much from private equity firms? 🤑 I mean, £2 billion sale price seemed kinda steep for a business that's struggling. But at the same time, it's interesting that they're not ruling out selling in the future. Maybe they just need some more time to figure things out with new CEO Henrique Braun coming on board? 💡 Whatever happens next, I'm sure Costa coffee fans will be keeping an eye on the situation 👀

😐 I'm kinda surprised they didn't sell it off after all that trouble. It's like they're trying to keep a sinking ship afloat 🚢💧. Private equity firms had some serious doubts about its value, but I guess Coke just wasn't ready to write it off yet 💸. Now I wonder what Braun is gonna do to turn things around - it's not like Costa Coffee can get any more broken than it already is 😔. Guess we'll just have to wait and see if they manage to perk up their business 🎂

omg i was thinking this would happen 😂 i mean i love costa coffee as much as the next person but it's been struggling for ages and i think coke was just trying to get out of a bad investment 🤦‍♂️ 2 billion is a lot of dosh and i can see why they'd wanna get outta there 👍 plus with henrique taking over in march i'm sure he'll figure some stuff out 🤔

Just what we need, another corporate giant to bail out a struggling business 🤦‍♂️. I mean, who needs private equity firms to mess things up, right? It's not like they're just looking for a quick buck or anything 💸. Anyway, it's good news for Costa Coffee employees, I guess... their jobs are safe for now 😌. The real question is what's going on with the £2 billion price tag 🤑. Is Coke just gonna write off another billion pounds as a loss? 🤔 Only time (and the next CEO) will tell 🕰️.

I'm so confused about this whole thing 🤷‍♀️... like, why would they even think selling it for £2 billion was a good idea? That just sounds crazy expensive 💸... I mean, who can afford to lose that much money? And what's with all these private equity firms? Do they really just buy companies and then... what do they do with them? 🤔... Anyway, I guess this means Coca-Cola is keeping Costa Coffee for now 😐... but honestly, I don't know if it's a good idea. Maybe they should've just stuck to selling Coke 😂

OMG, I'm so glad Coca-Cola decided to keep Costa Coffee! 🙌💖 It's been struggling for a while now & it's amazing that they're choosing to invest in their brand instead of selling it off. Maybe this is the wake-up call they needed? 😊 Plus, Henrique Braun seems like an awesome new CEO - fingers crossed he can turn things around for the company! 💪

OMG, I'm actually kinda relieved 🤗 that Coca-Cola dropped plans to sell Costa Coffee! I mean, it's been struggling for a while now and I was worried they'd cut their losses too quickly. But keeping it under their umbrella might just give them the chance to turn things around ☕️. Fingers crossed they can figure out how to compete with those fancy coffee shops on the high street 🙏. Plus, who knows, maybe Henrique Braun's gonna whip that place into shape 💪? Let's keep our fingers crossed for Costa Coffee! 👍

omg i feel bad for costa coffee 😔 they've been struggling so much since coke bought them back in 2018 🤦‍♂️ it's like, you'd think a multibillion dollar corp would be able to get things right but lol nope 👎 and now coke is just gonna keep having it as a loss? 🤑 like what's the point of owning something that's not even making u money 💸 anyway i guess this is good news for customers tho 😊 maybe we'll see some new innovations and improvements on their menu soon! ☕

ugh this is bad news 😩 gotta feel for costa coffee staff, they've been struggling for ages now 💔 and it's all because of those crazy high coffee bean prices ☕️ can't believe coca cola gave up on them 🤦‍♂️ at least now james quincey won't have to deal with it anymore 👋 hope henrique braun has a better plan in store for costa, but let's be real, it's gonna be tough 💔

😐 I don't get why Coke just gave up on Costa Coffee 🤔. They bought it for like 3.9 billion pounds back in 2018, but now they're just gonna keep it? That's a pretty big loss 🤑...or gain, depending how you look at it, right? 🤑 The coffee game is super competitive out there and I can see why they wouldn't want to deal with all that stress anymore 💀. Maybe Braun will have some new ideas to turn things around? 🤞 Fingers crossed for Costa Coffee 👍

I'm shocked 😱 that Coca-Cola decided to stick it out with Costa Coffee! I mean, £13.5 million in losses is a big deal 🤯, but I guess they're betting on something turning around soon. It's like when you order a coffee and it's not made just right - you don't give up on the barista that easily 😊. They must be thinking there's still hope for Costa to get back on track and become the caffeine superstar it once was ☕️.

I'm also wondering if they're planning some major changes to shake things up 🔄, like revamping their menu or marketing strategy. Maybe they'll bring in a new COO (that's coffee operations executive, lol) to breathe some life into the brand 💨.

Anyway, fingers crossed for Costa Coffee! Who knows what the future holds? 🤞

omg i cant believe i was gonna get my morning coffee fix at costa anytime soon lol, like i know they struggled but coca cola should've stuck it out rn 🤦‍♀️ anyway i got a tea subscription for 6 months now and its been lifesaver, i was getting so tired of the same ol coffee beans 😴 what's up with private equity firms tho? cant they just make a deal happen 💸 hope costa can turn things around under new management 💪
