Così Fan Tutte review – witty circus staging has its tongue firmly in its cheek

I love how this revival of Così Fan Tutte is all about poking fun at outdated attitudes, it's like they're saying "ok, we know you're old-fashioned, let's have some fun with it". And can we talk about Lucy Crowe's aria in that Ferris-wheel carriage? 🤯 It gives me chills every time. I think what's great about this production is how it balances humor and drama, it's like a big ol' hug for the opera genre. The cast does an amazing job of bringing out all these different emotions, from Guglielmo's annoyance to Despina's sassiness 🤣. And that chorus, oh man, they're the real MVPs. It's just a really clever and entertaining take on an old classic. 👏

🤔 I'm really loving this revival of Così Fan Tutte at the ENO, it's like they took all the old-school opera drama and turned it on its head with some sick circus moves 💥🎪! The way Phelim McDermott skewers outdated attitudes towards women and sex is totally on point 🙌. And the cast? Whoa, Lucy Crowe's aria in that Ferris-wheel carriage though 🚡😱... I'm not gonna lie, I was a bit skeptical at first but this show's got some serious 21st-century swag 💁‍♀️🎵. What really impressed me is how it balances wit and satire with emotional depth – it's like Mozart knew what he was doing all along 😂. Overall, I'd say this revival is a total masterclass in opera-making 🤝... let's hope they keep pushing the boundaries of what classical music can be!

🤩 I mean, what really gets me is how Phelim McDermott balances these wacky circus elements with this razor-sharp commentary on sexism and classism. It's like he's saying "okay, let's have some fun, but also let's not forget how messed up things were back then". And the cast totally nails it – Lucy Crowe's aerial performance is insane! 🤯 I love how they don't shy away from tackling those problematic elements head-on either. It's like they're saying "yeah, we know this stuff is old and outdated, but let's see if we can make it work in a way that feels fresh and exciting". The orchestra does a great job of capturing the energy and wit of the whole thing too. What I'd love to see next from Phelim McDermott is how he'd take on some of Mozart's other more conservative works... but that's a thread for another time 📈

The way they've reworked this old opera is pretty clever. I mean, who wouldn't want to see a circus spectacle on stage? 🤸‍♂️ But seriously, Phelim McDermott's got some great points about poking fun at the outdated attitudes towards women and sex in the original work. That scene with Guglielmo and the female extras is pure gold - it's like he's saying, 'Hey, let's take this sexist rant and turn it on its head'. The cast delivers too, Lucy Crowe's aria from that Ferris wheel thingy gives me chills every time 🎵. And I love how they've managed to keep the energy up without feeling too over-the-top - it's a perfect balance of wit, satire, and emotional depth. Overall, it's a really infectious show that feels surprisingly modern for an opera from 1790 😊.

I'm loving this new Così Fan Tutte revival at the English National Opera 🎭👏! The way they balanced wit, satire, and emotional depth is just genius 💡... (someone else said that) 😊

And I totally agree, the acrobatic elements in the show are not just a distraction, but actually serve to highlight the absurdity of the patriarchal society 🤸‍♀️👀. The chorus's attire is also such a great touch - it's like they're poking fun at the societal norms of the time 😂.

The cast is absolutely incredible, especially Lucy Crowe and Ailish Tynan 👏💖... (someone else said that too). And the orchestra is so energetic and engaging under conductor Dinis Sousa 🎵👍. The whole production just feels like a fresh take on an old classic, you know? 💫

OMG u gotta see this new Così Fan Tutte production @ ENO!!! 💥🎭 The way Phelim McDermott balances wit, satire & emotional depth is pure genius 🤩! I loved how the circus spectacle elements added to the absurdity of the patriarchal society 🤣 & the cast totally killed it across the board! Lucy Crowe's Ferris-wheel aria was giving me CHILLS 😍 & Ailish Tynan's Despina was scene-stealing perfection 🎭 The orchestra was on point too, conductor Dinis Sousa did an amazing job 👏. This revival is all about embracing Così Fan Tutte's wit & satire rather than nitpicking its issues - it's so refreshing to see a production that's not afraid to poke fun at itself 😂! Go watch it ASAP, trust me u won't regret it 🎟️
