Cubs president Jed Hoyer discusses Shota Imanaga option decisions and future

Cubs President Jed Hoyer addressed the team's pitching needs for next season, saying that they are thinner than their position-player side. The Cubs have already made several moves to strengthen their bullpen, including trading veteran reliever Andrew Kittredge back to the Orioles and re-signing Colin Rea on a one-year deal with a 2027 club option.

Hoyer also mentioned that Shota Imanaga's decision on whether to accept a $22 million-plus qualifying offer will impact their focus. The Cubs value Imanaga, who was "amazing" for them as a pitcher and teammate, but didn't think the club or player options were the right value. If he declines, they're open to further negotiation.

Hoyer expects to explore trades and free agency to address their pitching needs. He pointed to last year's signings of Matthew Boyd and Brad Keller as examples of how they can strengthen their rotation and bullpen.

Imanaga's performance in his first two years with the Cubs was "exceptional," but he struggled with a strained left hamstring that affected his velocity. The Cubs are developing an offseason plan for him to regain some strength and flexibility, regardless of whether he returns.

The team is prioritizing pitching due to their relatively thin depth chart on this side. Hoyer said they'll explore all options, including trades and free agency, to address the issue.

I'm kinda worried about Shota Imanaga's future with the Cubs 🀞... his injury last year was super rough and it's like he just regressed? still, 22 million plus is a lot of cash πŸ’Έ and if they don't think it's worth it, I get it. I mean, they did sign Matthew Boyd last year and Brad Keller too πŸ‘... maybe their strategy will pay off 🀞

I'm still trying to understand baseball... so like the Cubs are worried about their pitchers? They're not as strong as their position players? πŸ€” that makes sense, I guess. But why do they need more pitchers? Are they not good enough already? πŸ€ btw, have you seen that new video game where you can be a pitcher and throw a no-hitter? It's so cool! 😎

πŸ€” I'm loving the Cubs' move to strengthen their bullpen! πŸ’ͺ Andrew Kittredge might be getting shipped out but Colin Rea is stepping up as a nice addition. But what's really got me hyped is Shota Imanaga's potential! 🎯 If he declines that QO, the Cubs will open their wallets and look for big-name pitchers to shore up their rotation. Matthew Boyd and Brad Keller are proof they can make it happen. The pitching depth is key for this team, let's see if they can land someone game-changing like a starter. This offseason could get interesting... πŸ“ˆ

Ugh, Cubs are still struggling with their pitching πŸ€•... apparently Jed Hoyer is gonna have to do some serious wheeling and dealing next season... 22 million plus for Imanaga? too much imo πŸ’Έ. They're trying to strengthen their bullpen but it's like they're playing catch up... trading Kittredge away was a weird move, hope Rea can step up πŸ‘€. And what's with the whole team prioritizing pitching? they need some solid depth in the outfield and infield πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ... I mean, cubs fans deserve better than watching their team flail for 9 innings 😩

idk about this cub's strategy πŸ€”... if shota imanaga declines that 22 mil qualifying offer, its gonna be interesting to see how cubs navigate it. they seem to value him but not the offer? also, trading kittredge back to orioles for a bullpen boost is kinda weird... didnt think that move would help so much... what's the logic behind that? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Omg, I'm so curious about Shota Imanaga πŸ€”... like, what's the deal with him? Is he really worth $22m+? He was amazing for a bit, but then that hamstring thing happened 😬... and now they're gonna explore trades and free agency to strengthen their pitching? It sounds like it could get pretty interesting! I love how Jed Hoyer is being open about what they need, though πŸ’‘... like, no sugarcoating. The Cubs are basically saying, "Hey, our bullpen is solid, but our rotation needs a boost." And those signings of Matthew Boyd and Brad Keller seem to be working out... fingers crossed that Imanaga's plan pays off 🀞!

πŸ€” I'm kinda surprised they're not making a bigger move for Shota Imanaga πŸ€‘ considering his performance was "exceptional" two years ago. I feel like he's worth more than just a $22 million qualifying offer πŸ’Έ. They should be willing to pay top dollar to keep him, especially since they've already made moves to strengthen the bullpen. It'd be a shame if they lose him for cheap πŸ€•.

I think it's crazy how much emphasis the Cubs are putting on fixing their pitching staff 🀯 I mean, they're already making moves like trading away veteran reliever Kittredge and re-signing Colin Rea... but Jed Hoyer is saying that if Shota Imanaga declines his qualifying offer, they're gonna explore trades and free agency too? Like, what's the plan here? They just wanna strengthen their bullpen and rotation πŸ”„

And I get it, Imanaga was awesome last year, but he did have some issues with his hamstring... so maybe this is an opportunity for them to find someone else who can bring that level of performance to the table πŸ’ͺ

The Cubs need to find a way to balance their hitting and pitching lines up πŸ€”... I mean, it's not like they're the only team struggling with that. But seriously, if Shota Imanaga doesn't take that big qualifying offer, they'll have to scramble to find someone who can replace him in the rotation ⏰. And trades? That's a whole new ball game 🎾... you never know what you're gonna get. They did well with Matthew Boyd and Brad Keller last year, but it's not like those guys are going to be available for the long haul. Imanaga's injury was a bummer, but at least they're working on him, so fingers crossed he can get back to form πŸ’ͺ. The Cubs have some solid young arms coming up, so maybe they'll find some hidden gems in free agency... or trades 🀞

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s crazy how much the Cubs are focusing on pitching this offseason... 🀯 Like, I get it, their position players can be pretty thin, but you’d think they could scrounge up some decent starters. Matthew Boyd and Brad Keller were just okay last year, if you ask me. Still, I guess they got lucky with those signings or something 😐. And what’s up with Shota Imanaga? $22 million is a lot for him to turn down, right? πŸ€‘ But hey, at least the Cubs are exploring all their options, even if it means trading away some other players...

Man, I think the Cubs are really focusing on that pitching thing next season... it's like, a big deal for them! They wanna make sure they have some solid arms in the bullpen 'cause their position players just don't seem as strong in terms of depth, you know? Jed Hoyer said they're willing to do whatever it takes, whether that means trading or signing new guys. I mean, they already made some moves like that, like bringing back Colin Rea and getting Andrew Kittredge back from the Orioles. And now Shota Imanaga's gonna decide whether he sticks around for $22 million+, which will be interesting to watch... πŸ€”

OMG, can't wait 4 the Cubs 2 make some BIG moves in the offseason 🀩! They gotta strengthen that pitching staff ASAP, it's like they're leaving themselves open 2 get swept in the playoffs πŸ˜…. I'm hyped they signed Matthew Boyd last yr and are lookin 2 build on dat! Andrew Kittredge might b gone but Colin Rea just stepped up his game 🀞. Now let's see wut they do w/ Shota, if he declines that offer it's like a whole n8th ball just fell into their court ⚾️. The rotation & bullpen need work, gotta get that depth πŸ”’! Bring on the offseason trades and free agency, I got faith in the Hoyer crew πŸ’ͺ

πŸ˜’ I think they should focus on getting a solid starter who can give 'em 200 innings or more instead of chasing after some mid-tier relievers πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. They're gonna have to make some tough decisions if Shota decides to leave, though... I mean, $22 million+ is a lot for a guy with injury issues 😬. But at the same time, Imanaga was lights out in his first two years here, so it's hard to write him off completely πŸ’”. Maybe they can get creative and find someone who fits their budget without breaking the bank πŸ€‘. Anyway, I'm low-key hoping they make some big moves this offseason to shake up the staff πŸ‘€

omg i was watching cubs game with my bro last nite and that shota imanaga guy is super talented 😍 i think he's worth $22m tho... but like if he declines the offer, maybe they should just try to trade him? πŸ€” or maybe they can find another pitcher in free agency? i've been following cubs for years now and their pitching staff has always been kinda meh... πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ anyway, it's good that hoyer is addressing this issue πŸ™Œ but like how many trades and signings does a team need to make?! 😩

I'm thinking that Cubs are being super smart with their moves, especially in addressing those pitching needs πŸ€”. I mean, having a strong bullpen is key, right? And trading Andrew Kittredge back was a good move - he's still a solid pitcher. Shota Imanaga is a big decision for them, but if he doesn't take the qualifying offer, they're willing to chat with him again πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ.

Their rotation and bullpen moves last year showed that they can make some quality signings in free agency. Matthew Boyd and Brad Keller were solid picks! And I love how Hoyer is all about exploring options - it's like, if you don't have a plan B or C, you're stuck πŸ˜….

I think the Cubs are being proactive here, which is great. They're not just relying on Shota to carry them; they're setting up for success next year πŸ“ˆ. Now, let's see how it all plays out!

πŸ€” I think it's crazy how much the Cubs are emphasizing pitching right now! Like, we get it, you guys have some decent stuff but your rotation is still kinda weak πŸ™„. Why not invest in some actual talent instead of just signing random guys who might be okay πŸ€‘? And what's up with Shota Imanaga's decision - if he declines the offer, do they really think another team will come crawling to them? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It feels like they're trying to make a power move here and it might not pay off 😬.

.. I think it's kinda crazy how much emphasis they're putting on pitching, especially since the Cubs had a decent rotation last year πŸ€”. Don't get me wrong, Matthew Boyd and Brad Keller are awesome additions, but what about the team's overall depth? Are they gonna sacrifice some of their younger talent to strengthen the bullpen? I mean, Shota Imanaga was amazing when he was healthy, but what if he can't regain his form? The Cubs need to think about the bigger picture here 😬.
