Feds allege illegal college basketball gambling scheme in sweeping indictment

Federal authorities have charged 26 individuals in connection with a massive college basketball gambling scheme, according to an indictment released by the Department of Justice. The alleged scheme involved current and former players from multiple colleges and universities, with some accused of accepting bribes to influence game outcomes.

The indictment alleges that the players, coaches, and others were involved in a complex network of betting and point-shaving schemes, which included using inside information and manipulating games for personal gain. The government claims that the individuals involved used various methods to rig games, including instructing players on how to throw off defense or shoot poorly on purpose.

The indictment also alleges that some of the alleged scheme participants were paid substantial sums of money in exchange for their participation, with amounts ranging from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands. In one instance, a former college basketball coach is accused of receiving over $50,000 in bribes.

The investigation was led by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies, with assistance from the NCAA's Office of Integrity and Enforcement. The charges against the individuals involved were announced yesterday by Attorney General Merrick Garland.

This case highlights the ongoing problem of corruption in college sports and the need for increased transparency and accountability within the industry.

๐Ÿค” Man, I'm not surprised to see this kind of thing happening in college sports... it's like a never-ending cycle of greed and corruption ๐Ÿค‘. But you know what really gets me is that these cases always seem to be about the individuals involved, rather than the bigger picture... how did we get here? Like, what are some systemic issues that we need to address so something like this can't happen again? ๐Ÿ’ก I mean, I'm all for rooting out corruption and holding people accountable, but we need to make sure we're addressing the root causes of the problem. And hey, at least we know about it now... right? That's gotta count for something ๐Ÿ™.

Ugh, can you even believe what's going on with college basketball?! ๐Ÿคฏ These players and coaches are basically getting paid to throw games and it's just disgusting! I mean, think about all the fans who get taken advantage of because some selfish few can't resist the temptation of easy money. And now we've got a whole network of betting and point-shaving schemes going on, with people using inside information to manipulate games... it's like they're playing a different game altogether ๐Ÿ˜ก.

And what really gets my goat is that some of these guys are getting paid tens of thousands of dollars for participating in this nonsense. Like, what's the logic behind that? So you can get rich off of rigging games? It's just so... so... ugh! ๐Ÿคฏ The fact that we even need to investigate and take action against people like this is a testament to how messed up our sports system has become.

We really do need more transparency and accountability in college sports, though. I mean, it's not rocket science: if you're getting paid under the table or accepting bribes, that's a red flag. We deserve better than to have our favorite teams and players being rigged by crooked officials. Can't we just have a clean game for once? ๐Ÿ™„

๐Ÿ˜• This is just heartbreaking thinking about these young players being swayed by money and greed. I feel so bad for their families who are probably going through this trauma right now ๐Ÿค•. It's just so sad that they're being used like pawns in a game that's supposed to be about sportsmanship and fair play ๐Ÿ€. And it's not just the players, it's also these coaches and others who are benefiting from all this corruption ๐Ÿ’ธ. We need to do better as a society to support our young athletes and ensure they're not being exploited like this ๐Ÿค.

๐Ÿค” I mean, come on, 26 people? That's a whole lotta folks getting caught up in this mess. And let me tell you, accepting bribes to influence game outcomes is just basic common sense. If you're gonna play ball for the big bucks, you gotta keep it clean. I'm not saying everyone involved was dirty, but c'mon, who needs that kind of cash? And what's up with the NCAA not stepping in sooner? They had to wait for an FBI investigation to kick off? ๐Ÿšซ

And another thing, the amounts they're talking about? A few thousand dollars to tens of thousands? That's just peanuts compared to what players can make from legit scholarships and endorsements. I mean, I'm no economist, but it seems like these guys were trying to get paid for something that should've been free. ๐Ÿค‘

It's not just the individuals involved, though โ€“ this whole thing exposes a deeper rot in college sports culture. We need more transparency and accountability, period. Can't let this kind of corruption go unchecked. ๐Ÿ’ช

omg can u believe this? these players r cheatin' on the games they play 4 fun & money ๐Ÿค‘๐Ÿ˜ฑ what's wrong with people? u gotta think about all the fans who actually care about the sport & have to deal w/ rigged games ๐Ÿ˜ฉ anyway, it's good that law enforcement is stepin in 2 address this mess. but we need more than just punishments, we need real changes 2 prevent this stuff from happenin again ๐Ÿค”

Wow ๐Ÿคฏ
Interesting how deep the corruption goes, like they're literally influencing game outcomes ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ’ธ. And 50k is a lot of cash for just throwing off defense ๐Ÿค‘. I feel bad for the innocent players who got caught up in this mess ๐Ÿ˜ž. NCAA needs to step up their game and make sure everyone's playing fair ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ I'm so done with all this corruption in college sports! It's like, can't we just have a fair game for once? ๐Ÿ€ These players and coaches are getting paid to throw games, which is basically cheating. And now they're facing serious charges because of it. ๐Ÿ’ธ The system needs to change, you know? More transparency and accountability would be a great start. Maybe the NCAA should come clean about all the shady deals that have been going on in their ranks. ๐Ÿค It's not just about the money, it's about integrity. I'm glad the FBI is cracking down on this stuff. ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ

man this is so wild ๐Ÿคฏ 26 people gettin charged over a college basketball betting scheme? that's some next level stuff ๐Ÿค‘ like they're playin with fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ coaches, players, everyone involved? it just goes to show how deep corruption can run in sports, and we need more than just penalties to fix it ๐Ÿ’ธ these players gotta answer for their actions, but also the system that let this happen needs a major overhaul ๐Ÿ‘€

Just heard about this crazy college basketball scandal ๐Ÿคฏ. Like, you can't even make this stuff up... 26 people charged with a massive betting scheme? It's wild how far some people will go for a quick buck ๐Ÿ’ธ. The fact that former players and coaches were involved is no surprise, but the scale of it all is just ridiculous ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. And $50k in bribes? That's just insane ๐Ÿ’ฅ. I feel like college sports are already under scrutiny with all the cheating scandals, this just adds fuel to the fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ.

๐Ÿค” I gotta say, this whole situation with the college basketball gambling scheme is just wild ๐Ÿ™„. It's like something out of a movie or TV show. 26 individuals involved, multiple colleges and universities... it's crazy how complex these schemes can get. And the fact that some of these people are current and former players, coaches... it's like they were right under our noses the whole time ๐Ÿ˜’.

I mean, think about it - if you're a college athlete, you've got a chance to make a killing playing ball, but what if someone offered you even more money just for throwing the game? It's like they say, "you can't put a price on integrity"... but in this case, I guess some people did ๐Ÿค‘.

The thing that really gets me is how brazen these individuals were. Some of them were getting paid tens of thousands of dollars just to participate... it's like they thought they were above the law or something. And now we're left dealing with the fallout - corruption in college sports, a loss of trust for the athletes and fans who are already paying top dollar to watch their favorite teams compete.

Anyway, I think this case highlights the need for even more transparency and accountability in college sports ๐Ÿค. It's not just about the money; it's about maintaining the integrity of the game itself.

OMG ๐Ÿ˜ฒ just saw this news about college basketball players and coaches getting caught up in a massive gambling scheme ๐Ÿค‘ like what's next? are they gonna start rigging games at the pros too? ๐Ÿ’ธ and $50k is crazy for just being involved, i mean i get it if you're making that kinda cash but come on. i'm all for transparency and accountability though, we need to make sure these types of schemes don't happen in other sports or industries. why not have a system in place to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the first place? ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿค” This whole college basketball thing is crazy... I mean, you gotta wonder how far corruption goes in some industries. Like, $50k bribes to influence a game? That's insane. And it's not just players, coaches are involved too? ๐Ÿค‘ The system is supposed to be about the athletes and their education, but instead it seems like there's this whole underbelly of payoffs and insider info.

It's good that the authorities stepped in to investigate and now we've got some charges filed. But what's gonna happen next? Is anyone really gonna get held accountable for these actions? I feel like a lot of people are going to just shake their heads and say "oh, it's just part of college sports" ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ But this is wrong on so many levels.

We need more transparency in college sports, that's for sure. The whole point of having rules is to prevent stuff like this from happening. We can't keep turning a blind eye and expecting everything to be okay. More needs to be done to clean up the system. ๐Ÿ’ช

OMG, can't believe what's going on in the world of college basketball ๐Ÿคฏ. These players and coaches are like, totally cheating the system, and now they're gonna pay the price ๐Ÿ’ธ. It's not cool that some of these people were getting paid to throw games, it's just not right ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. And for real, $50k in bribes? That's crazy ๐Ÿ˜ฒ. I hope this case helps shine a light on how corrupt college sports can get and brings about some changes ๐Ÿ’ช. We need more accountability and transparency, you feel me? ๐Ÿ‘Š

Man this is just so messed up ๐Ÿค•, gotta think about the kids who got caught up in all this - they're the ones who lost out on their education and future opportunities because of some greedy adults trying to make a quick buck. The fact that coaches were getting paid tens of thousands of dollars to throw games is just insane ๐Ÿ’ธ, it's like they're more focused on lining their pockets than helping their players grow as people and athletes.

And you know what the worst part is? This isn't an isolated incident, there are plenty of other scandals in college sports that have happened over the years. It just goes to show that we need to keep pushing for transparency and accountability in all levels of sports, so that these kinds of corrupt schemes can never happen again ๐Ÿ™.

can you believe this stuff ๐Ÿคฏ these players coaches are literally throwing away their integrity for a few grand or tens of thousands of dollars it's wild how some people can get so caught up in greed that they'd sacrifice everything they worked for... and it's not just the ones getting paid, but also the ones who are supposed to be enforcing the rules like refs and officials ๐Ÿค they need to do better at keeping these scammers in check ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿค” this whole thing is wild, i mean what happens when people are willin to bend the rules for a big payday? it's like they think no one's watchin' or that the ends justify the means... newsflash: college sports is supposed to be about competition and fair play, not some fancy scheme to rig games ๐Ÿค‘ and honestly, who gets caught up in this stuff anyway? are these guys just in it for the money or do they really believe they can get away with this? ๐Ÿค‘ either way, it's a shame, 'cause college sports is supposed to be about so much more than just winning ๐Ÿ’”

I'm like totally blown away by this whole scandal ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, who knew that some of our favorite college hoops stars were secretly on the take? It's wild to think about how much money was being funneled into these players' pockets in exchange for 'influencing' game outcomes ๐Ÿ’ธ. And can we talk about how easy it is to manipulate games with inside info? Like, I get that sports are supposed to be competitive and all, but this stuff is straight-up cheating ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I'm not surprised, though. I mean, corruption in college sports has been a thing for years. It's like, the NCAA needs to step up its game (pun intended) when it comes to policing these scandals. And what about the coaches? They're just as guilty, right? I mean, who was watching the back of these players and making sure they weren't getting paid off under the table? ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿšจ This is what happens when you put money above integrity... I mean, who needs a fair game anyway? ๐Ÿ’ธ These guys think they're above the law just because they're ballers, but newsflash: you get caught, you get charged ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ. The NCAA's got to step up its game (no pun intended) and make sure these kinds of schemes don't happen again ๐Ÿšซ. Can't have players being bought out for throwing a game... it's just not right ๐Ÿ˜.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing ๐Ÿคฏ. It's crazy to think that some former and current college basketball players were involved in a massive betting scheme, basically throwing games to get paid ๐Ÿ’ธ. I mean, I get it, money is hard to resist, but it's just so sad that it comes down to that ๐Ÿ˜”. And coaches getting paid tens of thousands for doing their job? That's just wrong ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ.

I think this case really highlights how corrupt college sports can be. I mean, we already know there are some problems with the system, but this takes it to a whole new level ๐Ÿ”ฅ. It's like they're playing for themselves instead of the team and the fans. The NCAA needs to step up their game (no pun intended ๐Ÿ€) and make sure something like this never happens again. Transparency and accountability are key ๐Ÿ’ช.
