For some Apple customers, a sudden bank deposit bearing the name "Lopez Voice Assistant" has raised eyebrows. But rest assured, this unexpected payment is not a scam – it's an official settlement from Apple.

In May 2021, Fumiko Lopez, a California resident, filed a lawsuit against Apple alleging that its Siri voice assistant eavesdropped on private conversations and shared the information with third-party businesses for targeted advertising. The allegations sparked a wave of similar claims, and in early July, the parties reached a $95 million settlement.

The payout is based on how many people filed claims and the number of Siri-enabled devices each person owned. Claimants who submitted their banking information can expect to receive deposits ranging from $8 to $40 per device, depending on the number of devices involved. The settlement includes up to five devices, with a cap of $20 per device.

But what exactly is this payment? According to Apple's official statement, the money represents your portion of the company's settlement over allegations that Siri eavesdropped on people. To confirm whether you've received the payout, check your bank account for a deposit under "Lopez Voice Assistant" or "Lopez Voice Asst—Payouts."

While some may be concerned about this unexpected payment, it's essential to note that Apple denied any wrongdoing and maintained that its Siri assistant did not share private conversations with third-party businesses.
