'Hands off Greenland': Thousands protest in Denmark against Trump's land grab

Thousands of people took to the streets in Copenhagen and other Danish cities on Saturday to protest against US President Donald Trump's proposal to take over Greenland. The protest came after Trump warned that he would impose tariffs on countries opposing his plans, sparking widespread outrage among Danes.

A bipartisan delegation from the US Congress, led by Democratic Senator Chris Coons, met with top Danish and Greenlandic politicians and business leaders in Copenhagen. However, the visit was overshadowed by the growing protests against Trump's stance on Greenland.

The protesters, waving Danish flags alongside those of Greenland, chanted slogans such as "Kalaallit Nunaat!", the name of Greenland in Greenlandic, demanding respect for the autonomous territory's democracy and fundamental human rights.

Organisers said the aim was to send a unified message against the US administration's plans, which have been met with widespread opposition among Greenlanders. A sister demonstration is scheduled to take place on Sunday in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, where protesters will march to the US consulate carrying Greenlandic flags.

The protests came as Trump has repeatedly accused Denmark of not doing enough to ensure Greenland's security, despite the territory being covered by NATO's security umbrella. European NATO members have announced they are deploying troops to Greenland for a military exercise, with the United States invited to participate.

Greensburgers in both Greenland and Denmark have called on their leaders to stand together against the US administration's plans, saying that there is no security threat to justify Trump's stance. "We demand respect for our country's right to self-determination and for us as a people," said one organiser.

A recent poll showed that 85% of Greenlanders oppose the territory joining the United States, while only six per cent were in favour. The opposition is bipartisan, with many Americans expressing concern about Trump's stance on Greenland.

As tensions rise, US lawmakers are beginning to speak out against Trump's plans, calling for a more nuanced approach to Arctic security that prioritises international cooperation and respect for sovereignty. The protests in Denmark serve as a reminder that the fate of Greenland hangs in the balance, and that the world is watching closely as this critical issue unfolds.

๐Ÿค” The protests in Copenhagen are definitely a sign that not everyone agrees with Trump's plan to take over Greenland ๐ŸŒŽ. It's interesting to see how the Danish people are standing up for their country's autonomy and self-determination ๐Ÿ’ช. I mean, 85% of Greenlanders opposing the territory joining the US is a pretty clear message ๐Ÿ˜Š.

It also highlights the bipartisan opposition to Trump's stance from both Greenlanders and Americans ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฐ. The fact that European NATO members are deploying troops for a military exercise without any evidence of a security threat suggests that there's more at play here than just Trump's ego ๐Ÿ’ก.

The protests in Denmark are definitely sending a strong message that the world is watching and that this issue won't be ignored ๐ŸŒ. It'll be interesting to see how US lawmakers respond to these concerns and whether they can find a way to address them without alienating their own people ๐Ÿ‘€.

I'm literally hyped about what's happening in Copenhagen right now ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฐ! Thousands of Danes and Greenslanders coming together to show their love for their homeland is truly inspiring ๐Ÿ’•. I mean, can you blame them? The thought of the US taking over Greenland is just so...not on ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. Those protesters waving those flags alongside each other is giving me all the feels โค๏ธ, and I'm so glad to see people from both countries standing united in their opposition.

And let's be real, Trump's plans are just not going down well with most Americans either ๐Ÿ˜’. A bipartisan delegation coming in and facing resistance like this? It's a major sign that something is amiss ๐Ÿšจ. The fact that Greenlanders have been vocal about opposing the US taking over is making me proud of our world leaders for standing up for what they believe in ๐Ÿ’ช.

This whole situation is giving me life, and I'm here for it ๐Ÿ˜†. It's amazing to see people coming together for a cause, and I just can't wait to see how this all unfolds ๐Ÿค”. Bring it on, world! ๐Ÿ’ฅ

๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ˜ฌ I gotta say, Trump's plan to take over Greenland is crazy ๐Ÿคฏ! I mean, who decides what's best for another country? It feels like a classic case of colonialism all over again. The fact that the Danes and Greenlanders are standing up against this plan shows they're not going down without a fight ๐Ÿ’ช. It's awesome to see people coming together to protect their land and way of life ๐ŸŒŸ. And honestly, 85% of Greenlanders don't want to be part of the US? That's a pretty clear message from the people themselves ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ. We should definitely be watching this situation closely to make sure no one is being taken advantage of ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. The international community needs to speak up and support Denmark and Greenland in their fight for self-determination ๐Ÿ’•

omg so many ppl are mad at trump lol like what did he do 2 danes already? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ anyway its kinda cool that danes r standing up 4 their greeneelandic brethren & all but cant help feelin like usa is just tryna act like a bully again... nato security umbrella or watever, still sounds like trump just wanna keep his ego intact ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

๐Ÿคฏ I'm totally with the Danes on this one! Trump's got to back off his plans to take over Greenland - it's like, hello, it's their territory too, you know? ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ I mean, I get that he thinks Greenland's got strategic importance or whatever, but come on, that doesn't give the US the right to just swoop in and take control. It's like a bad 80s power movie - "I'm the president, therefore I win!" ๐Ÿšซ No way, dude.

And can we talk about how Trump is basically using tariffs as leverage? Like, is this some kind of joke? ๐Ÿคฃ Newsflash: tariffs are never a good idea. They just hurt ordinary people and small businesses. And what's with the NATO thing? Is he trying to create some kind of Arctic superpower or something? ๐ŸŒŸ It's all just so... Trump.

Anyway, I've got to give props to these Danish protesters - they're standing up for their people and their territory like true champs ๐Ÿ’ช. And it's not like Greenland doesn't have the right to self-determination, either. It's a sovereign nation with its own government and culture. So, yeah, let's all just calm down and let the politicians figure this out... or maybe just ignore Trump altogether ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

OMG u wont bliev wut's happnin in denmark rn!! thousands of ppl are out in the streets protesting against trump takin over greenland ๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ˜ก they r sayin no way joe, not 4 a sec, Greenland has its own gov & rights 2 make its own decsionz ๐Ÿค Denmark isnt doin enuf 2 protect it, danes need 2 stand up 4 their country n their people ๐Ÿ’ช meanwhile trump is all like "tariffs or else" ๐Ÿค‘ and u think that's gonna work? ๐Ÿ˜‚ anywayz, even some americans r gettin fed up w/ trumps antics & some lawmakers r speakin out against the plans ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ lets hope they listen 2 the ppl & not just do wht trump says ๐Ÿ‘

omg can't believe trump thinks he can just swoop in & claim greeland like it's his own personal property lol what even is the logic behind taking over some frozen island? ๐Ÿคฃ also seriously 85% of greenlanders say no to joining us and we're still trying to convince them? ๐Ÿ˜‚ anyway, i'm not surprised that americans are getting cold feet about this whole thing but what's good is that congress people are finally speaking out against trump's plans ๐Ÿ™Œ

Man, this US move on Greenland is getting crazy ๐Ÿ˜ฑ! I mean, who does Trump think he's talking to? Like, the Danes are already saying no to the idea of joining the States, but Trump just won't take that as a hint ๐Ÿค”. He's basically trying to strong-arm Denmark into doing his bidding, and it's just not cool.

And let's be real, this whole thing is about power and control ๐Ÿ’ช. The US wants Greenland for its own strategic interests, but the people of Greenland are saying no way, Jose ๐Ÿ‘Š. It's all about respecting their autonomy and sovereignty, you know? I mean, would we want some foreign country telling us how to run our country? Didn't think so ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ.

And have you seen those protesters out there waving their flags? They're not messing around ๐Ÿค˜! This is a wake-up call for all of us to pay attention to what's going on in the Arctic. It's not just about Greenland; it's about the bigger picture of international cooperation and respect for human rights ๐ŸŒŽ.

I'm loving how some US lawmakers are starting to speak out against Trump's plans, though ๐Ÿ™Œ. Maybe they're finally listening to the people and realizing that this move is a total non-starter ๐Ÿšซ. The fate of Greenland may be hanging in the balance, but I think it's time for Trump to put his foot down and stop trying to bully Denmark ๐Ÿ˜ฌ.

Ugh ๐Ÿ˜” I can only imagine how scary it must be for those people living in Greenland to have their future being decided by someone else's ego ๐Ÿคฏ. It's like, what even is the point of imposing tariffs on them? ๐Ÿค‘ They're already dealing with climate change and all that... do they really need an extra layer of stress? ๐Ÿ˜ฉ I'm so proud of those Danes who stood up for their people and showed some major courage ๐Ÿ’ช. And can we talk about how Trump's whole thing is just a huge embarrassment for the US ๐Ÿ™„? Like, come on guys, can't you just get along with each other? ๐Ÿ’•

Wow ๐Ÿ˜ฎ - Can you imagine Trump trying to take over another country? It's crazy! The fact that most Danes are against it too makes me think that Denmark should stand firm against Trump's demands. Greenland has its own identity and way of life, and they shouldn't be forced into something they don't want. This is all about respecting other countries' sovereignty, right? ๐Ÿค Interesting

omg you guys I am literally shook by the protests in Copenhagen ๐Ÿ˜ฑ! like 10k people took to the streets demanding respect for Greenland's democracy and human rights ๐Ÿ™ it's amazing to see such a strong unity among Danes and Greenlanders against Trump's plans ๐Ÿ’ช they're not going down without a fight, and honestly who can blame them? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ the idea that the US would just take over Greenland is like something out of a bad sci-fi movie ๐Ÿ˜ณ I mean 85% of Greenlanders are straight up opposed to it, so let's get on board with their stance ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿคž I'm not surprised that people are really upset about Trump's plans to take over Greenland ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. But you know what? This whole thing could be an opportunity for the international community to come together and have a serious conversation about the future of our planet ๐ŸŒŽ. Like, think about it - if the US is willing to impose tariffs on countries opposing their plans, that's some major red flag ๐Ÿ”ด. On the other hand, we've got European NATO members deploying troops to Greenland for a military exercise... maybe that's a sign that some folks are getting their priorities straight ๐Ÿ’ช? And have you seen those numbers from the recent poll? 85% of Greenlanders say they oppose joining the US? That's like, super clear ๐Ÿ“Š. So yeah, I get why people are protesting, but let's also keep an open mind and see where this whole thing goes... who knows, maybe we'll come out with some amazing solutions ๐Ÿ’ก!

Dude what's up with Trump wanting to take over Greenland? Like seriously, can't he just chill? ๐Ÿคฏ Those people have been independent for ages, it's their thing. And now he's all like "oh, I'll impose tariffs if you don't do what I say"... yeah no thanks America needs to back off and let the Danes/Greenlanders handle their own affairs. This whole US presence in Greenland thing is already a big deal because of NATO, so it's like adding insult to injury when Trump starts throwing his weight around ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ And 85% of Greenlanders are straight up opposed to joining the US? Like what else does he want from them?

I'm really worried about what's going on with Greenland ๐Ÿค”. I mean, can you believe Trump is trying to take it over? It's just crazy talk ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. The Danes are totally right to stand up against him - they know their territory and they're not going to let some US politician dictate what's best for them.

And yeah, the whole NATO thing is weird... I don't get why Trump is being so aggressive about it. Doesn't he know that Greenland's got its own government and people who want to make their own decisions? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ It's like, come on, dude - respect the sovereignty!

I'm loving all the solidarity between Danes and Greenlanders though - it's beautiful to see people from different countries coming together for a common cause โค๏ธ. And I'm so glad some US lawmakers are speaking out against Trump's plans - maybe they can do some good before things get too out of hand ๐Ÿคž.

We just need to keep an eye on this situation and hope that everyone involved is talking sense... because if we're all just standing around waiting for someone else to fix it, then nothing's going to change ๐Ÿ’ก.
