If you're a WhatsApp user looking for a free way to chat with the highly intelligent and versatile AI bot, ChatGPT, then you might be in luck. Until January 2026, Meta's messaging app will offer users the chance to interact with the AI inside WhatsApp without having to pay a dime.

To get started, open WhatsApp on your device and tap the "+" button at the top right of your conversation list. Choose "New contact" and dial the number: 1-800-242-8478 (or simply 1-800-ChatGPT). This will add ChatGPT to your contacts list.

Next, give ChatGPT a name – "ChatGPT" is a suitable choice – and you'll be able to tap on it to start chatting. Unlike the official ChatGPT apps for the web or mobile, this version of the AI won't require you to connect an account. However, if you do link your account before the free chatbot access ends in January 2026, your chat history within WhatsApp will be preserved in your ChatGPT account.

One thing's worth noting: standard WhatsApp features are still available while using ChatGPT inside WhatsApp. You can take photos of objects to ask ChatGPT about them, look up information on the web, or generate images with a text prompt.

But for how long will you have access to this free feature? Unfortunately, OpenAI will be ending it in January 2026 due to a change in Meta's "policy and terms" for the messaging platform. You've got until then to take advantage of the free usage, though.
