‘I’m Not Everything I Want to Be’ Review: A Queer Czech Photographer Co-Authors Her Documentary

Czech Oscar Entry "I'm Not Everything I Want to Be" Gets Lost in Its Own Creative Spirit

Klára Tasovská's 2026 Czech Oscar entry "I'm Not Everything I Want to Be" is a rare documentary that delves deep into the creative world of queer Czech photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková. By incorporating her own photographs and journals, Tasovská co-authors the film with Jarcovjáková, blurring the lines between documentary and art.

The resulting photomosaic mimics movement through successive shots, creating a soundscape of time and place that immerses the viewer in Jarcovjáková's striking black-and-white photography. As she travels from Czechoslovakia to Japan and West Berlin, her images capture moments of love, rejection, and self-discovery.

Despite its intriguing title, which translates to "I'm Not Yet Who I Want to Be," the documentary often feels like a diary of not just self-image, but of personal and artistic process. Jarcovjáková's photographs are stark and intimate, revealing people through overexposed skin as much as hiding them in shadow.

However, the film's approach can be overwhelming at times, charging forward at breakneck speed without allowing for much reflection or analysis. The viewer is often left to piece together the meaning behind Jarcovjáková's imagery, which sometimes feels like it's being pulled away from them.

Despite this, there are moments of liberation and belonging that shine through, particularly in the film's use of color and strobing effects to capture Prague's queer nightlife. These moments are fleeting but powerful, making the viewer feel like they're experiencing a fragment of Jarcovjáková's world firsthand.

Ultimately, "I'm Not Everything I Want to Be" is a commendable attempt at blending documentary and art, yielding remarkable results in some scenes. However, its frenetic pace can leave it feeling unsatisfying at times, as if it's trying too hard to cohere into something cohesive.

Aw man, this doc feels like it's running on fumes sometimes 🤯 It's like, I get that it's trying to capture a lot of emotions and experiences, but honestly, I think it'd be really cool if it took a breather every now and then 😌 Just feel me? The color scenes in Prague are EVERYTHING though 💃🕺 They're so vivid and alive! But yeah, some parts of it can feel like it's just flying by without you getting to really grasp what's going on 🤔

the film's fast-paced nature makes me feel like i'm missing out on the bigger picture 🤯 it's like tasovská is trying to cram all of jarcovjáková's thoughts and emotions into one 90-minute runtime, which can be overwhelming at times 🕰️ personally, i'd love to see a more measured approach that lets the viewer really absorb what's being shown. some of the color scenes in prague's queer nightlife are stunning tho ✨

the filmmakers might want to take a deep breath and chill out on the editing ⏱️...i mean, i love how they're pushing boundaries with this doco, but sometimes it feels like it's losing its way in all the noise 🗣️

🤔 the filmmakers are really trying to push boundaries here, but i think they could've benefited from a bit more editing to smooth out the flow 📹 i love that they incorporated libuše's journals and photos though - it adds such depth to the documentary 💭 what really stood out to me was those moments of liberation in prague's queer nightlife 🌈 color and strobing effects can be so captivating, and it's great that they were able to capture that energy on film 😊

omg i think the film's pacing is actually kinda what makes it so intense 🤯 it's like you're thrown into libuše's world and expected to keep up with her whirlwind of emotions and experiences. some ppl might find it overwhelming, but for me, that's part of the appeal - it feels like an immersive experience that you can't look away from 🔥 also i love how the film blends photography and journals to create this photomosaic effect 📸 it's like a visual diary that you're right there with her in.

🤔 I just watched this doc on Libuše Jarcovjáková and I gotta say, it was like getting lost in her world for a bit... the photography is insane 💥 and I loved how it wasn't just about her life but also about her art process. But at the same time, sometimes I felt like I needed a few minutes to breathe 😅 because the pace was so fast and there wasn't enough room for reflection or thinking about what you'd just seen. It's like they were trying to show everything at once 🌈. Still, when it worked, it was magic ✨

🤔 i think the film's biggest strength is also its weakness - its willingness to experiment and blur lines between documentary and art. it's like claude monet painting a portrait of libuše jarcovjáková's life, but instead of just capturing her likeness, he captures the fleeting moments that make up her experience 🌈. sometimes it feels like too much is happening at once, but i think that's also part of its charm - it's like being dropped into a dream sequence and having to piece together what's real and what's not 💭. overall, it's a bold and thought-provoking film that will resonate with anyone who's ever felt like they're navigating the in-between spaces 🌊.

🤔 this doco feels like a wild ride, man... all these crazy shots and colour vibes, but sometimes I feel like i'm just chasing the meaning behind all that. can't say i was fully immersed in claude's world (libuše jarcovjáková), but i loved the bits where you could just let go and be with the queer nightlife in prague 🌈💃

🤔 I think the problem with this docu-art hybrid is that it's like a fast-paced rom-com – it's got all the ingredients but sometimes feels like it's moving too quickly for its own good 🚀. You need some time to breathe and process what's happening on screen, especially when Jarcovjáková's life story is as complex as it is intriguing 📸. Don't get me wrong, I love the way Tasovská weaves together Libuše's photography and journals into this photomosaic – it's like a time capsule of queer Czech history 🕰️. But sometimes I feel like I'm trying to solve a puzzle that's still being pieced together in real-time 🧩. Still, those moments of liberation and color are pure magic ✨.

omg u guys have u seen this doc on libuše jarcovjáková? 🤯 i'm not everything i want to be is like a total vibe, but at the same time, its pacing is kinda crazy fast lol 😅 it feels like she's just sharing her life with us and expectin us 2 understand everythin' that's goin on. its deep tho, though - u can really feel her struggle with identity & creativity 🌈 i loved when they used color & strobes in prague, though! that was so beautiful 💃🏽🎥

🤔 I'm not sure about this one... I mean, I love the idea of blending documentary and art, but "I'm Not Everything I Want to Be" feels like a bit of a mess to me 📹. It's like they're trying to cram too much into one film - all these fragmented shots and sounds that just make me feel dizzy 🔄. And don't get me wrong, Libuše Jarcovjáková's photography is amazing, but I wish the filmmakers had taken a step back to let it breathe, you know? It's like they're trying to force this sense of liberation and belonging on the viewer 🌈. For me, the film feels like a highlight reel - all these great moments, but not much context or depth to really make them land 💭. Maybe I'm just being too critical 👀?

🤔 I feel like the docu is tryin' to tackle too many themes at once - Libuše's personal journey, her art, and her experiences as a queer woman in Europe... it's like, yeah we get it, you're an awesome photographer with a lot on your mind. But sometimes I wanna sit back, relax, and just enjoy the visuals without bein' forced to decipher every little detail about her life. And that strobing effect in Prague's nightlife scene? 🌃💃 it's like, wow, that's some wild stuff! But for real though, if they'd dialed it back a notch, I think we would've had a more satisfying film.

🤔 this doc feels like it's trying to be a lot of things at once - it's both super personal and artistic, but also kinda disjointed 🎥. i get that the goal is to capture libuše's world and emotions, but sometimes i felt like i was just skimming the surface 📸. the flickering black & white pics are gorgeous tho! ✨

I don't usually comment but... I'm not sure what to make of this docu-art film "I'm Not Everything I Want to Be". It feels like a super personal and intense look into the life of Libuše Jarcovjáková's photography, but also kinda overwhelming at times? 🤯 I mean, I get why the filmmakers wanted to blur the lines between doc and art, but sometimes it feels like they're just throwing a bunch of images at you without giving you time to catch your breath. 😓 And those strobing effects in Prague's queer nightlife? 🔥 It's like you're right there with her for that moment, but then what happens next is just kinda lost on you? 🤔 Still, I guess it's commendable effort and all... just maybe needed a bit more polish to make it truly shine. 👍

idk about this film lol it feels like klára tasovská is trying so hard to make it a masterpiece but sometimes it just gets lost in all the creative spirit 🤯🎥 i love libuše jarcovjáková's photography tho, it's so moody and intense! 📸😍 the use of color in prague's queer nightlife scenes is literally my fave part 😍 but yeah, at times it feels like the film is rushing through all these emotions and thoughts without giving us a chance to fully absorb them 🤯💭

man this film sounds like an intense ride 🎥👀 i mean i love how they're blending docu and art but yeah the pacing can be a bit much sometimes it feels like you're just watching a bunch of pics roll by without any real stop to think about what's going on 😅 maybe that's the point tho? it's all about capturing that feeling of being in the moment and not overthinking it 🌆

OMG what's going on w/ this docu?? 🤯 I mean, I'm all for blurring the lines between documentary & art but this one feels like it's trippin' out 🌪️ Klára Tasovská & Libuše Jarcovjáková are def tryna create somethin' revolutionary here but at times it feels like they're runnin' w/ their mouths open 💨 Like, I get that we need to see these powerful queer images but do we really need the soundscape too? 🎧 And what's up w/ all these rapid cuts? Can't we just take a sec to soak it in? 😴 Still, there r moments of pure magic like when Jarcovjáková's photography comes alive w/ strobes & color 🌈 It's like you're right there w/ her in Prague's queer nightlife, feelin' that sense of liberation. Maybe they just need 2 fine-tune the pacing a bit? 👍
