India trials Delhi cloud seeding to clean air in world's most polluted city

India has embarked on a novel experiment to tackle its notorious air pollution by seeding clouds with silver iodide over Delhi, hoping to bring down toxic fumes. The plan was proposed by the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) which came into power earlier this year and has been touted as a means to combat the city's suffocating smog.

The technique, known as cloud seeding, involves dispersing silver iodide particles into clouds, which then stimulate rain formation. This may potentially wash away pollutants but experts are skeptical about its efficacy. According to two professors at Delhi's Centre for Atmospheric Sciences, it is an "unsuitable remedy" that lacks scientific backing and poses unknown risks.

While the government has set October 29 as a target date for the city's first artificial rain, critics argue that this is merely a short-term fix without addressing the root causes of pollution. The experts point to the lack of research into long-term effects on agriculture and human health due to repeated use of chemicals used in cloud seeding.

Delhi has been named the world's most polluted city for over a decade now, with pollution levels spiking by 6% in 2024 compared to the previous year. The city's notorious smog problem is worsened during winters when fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) exceeds Beijing's infamous airpocalypse levels from 2013.

The government's plan may be met with a mix of optimism and skepticism as it seeks to alleviate Delhi's severe pollution crisis.

I think its pretty cool that the gov is tryin' out this cloud seeding thingy to tackle delhi's pollution problem 🌫️💨. I mean, we all know how bad air quality is there, especially during winters 😷. And hey, even if it dont work out, at least theyre tryin somethin new, right? 🤔 I've seen some vids of this stuff online and its actually pretty neat, like a big sci-fi movie ⚡️. Plus, its not just about the gov, its also about the people who are affected by pollution, like farmers and whatnot 🌾👍. They should be supported and given options to deal with the problem instead of just hopin it goes away magically 💫.

I feel so frustrated for the people living in Delhi, having to breathe in that toxic smog all the time 🤕. It's not just the air quality that's affected, but also their overall health and well-being. I can imagine how scary it must be to wake up every morning knowing that your city is one of the most polluted on the planet 😷.

I'm worried about the long-term effects of this plan too... what if it doesn't work out as hoped? What if it causes more harm than good? 🤔 It's just not right that they're rushing into something without doing more research and considering all the potential consequences. I wish there was a way to address the root causes of pollution, like investing in renewable energy and improving waste management systems 💚.

It's good that the government is trying to find solutions, but it feels like we need a more comprehensive approach 🤷‍♀️. I hope they listen to the experts and take their concerns seriously. The people of Delhi deserve better! ❤️

I'm loving the idea of seeding clouds with silver iodide, but I mean, have you seen those Bollywood movies where it rains cats and dogs? Like, is that really what we're aiming for in Delhi? 🤣 Anyway, I guess it's better than nothing, right? But seriously, can't our gov just make us wear masks all day instead of messing with the clouds? 😂 And 6% more pollution in 2024 is like, 0.6% less hope for my sanity. This smog problem is killing me (not literally, please don't let it be). Maybe we should just import a healthy dose of fresh air from Iceland or something? 🌿

I THINK THIS IS A PRETTY REASONABLE IDEA, BUT WE NEED TO SEE SOME PROOF IT REALLY WORKS!!! I mean, who doesn't want clean air in their city?! The thing is, the experts have some valid concerns about it not being a long-term solution and all that jazz. BUT AT LEAST THEY'RE TRYING SOMETHING! We should be supporting them, even if it's just for being willing to try something new.

AND OMG HAVE YOU SEEN THE POLLUTION LEVELS IN DELHI?! IT'S LIKE, WHOA!!! 6% increase in 2024 is NO CHUMP CHANGE!!! We need to get serious about addressing the root causes of this problem. Can we combine cloud seeding with other eco-friendly solutions like green roofs and solar panels? That would be AMAZING! Let's hope they find a way to make it work...

ugh i dont know about this cloud seeding thing... sounds like they're trying to fix the problem on the surface level instead of really addressing what's causing it in the first place 🤔. i mean, what if it makes things worse? i've been reading a lot about air pollution and it seems like there are so many factors at play - industrial activity, vehicle emissions, burning crops... its all super complicated 💡. can't we just invest in cleaner energy sources and public transportation instead of trying to 'seed' our way out of this mess? 🌞

omg this sounds like a huge experiment 🤯 i'm not sure if it'll actually work but at least they're trying right? i feel bad for the people living in delhi having to deal with all that smog 😷 6% increase is crazy! what's wrong with the government tho, can't they just tackle the root cause of pollution instead of just masking it 🤔

I'm not sure if seeding clouds with silver iodide is the right approach to tackle Delhi's air pollution... 🤔 I mean, think about all those chemicals being sprayed into the atmosphere - what could go wrong? 😬 Not to mention the potential effects on agriculture and human health. It's like throwing a band-aid on a deep wound. We need to address the root cause of pollution, not just cover it up with some fancy tech trick. 💧 What do you guys think? Should we be skeptical about this plan or should we give it a chance? 🤔

Ugh, another brilliant idea from our leaders 💁‍♀️. I mean, seeding clouds with silver iodide? That's like throwing a bunch of random stuff at the problem and hoping for the best 🤷‍♂️. And don't even get me started on the lack of research into long-term effects... it's just a short-term fix to distract us from actually solving the problem 🔮.

And can we talk about how long it's taken for Delhi to become the world's most polluted city? Decade-long struggle, and now our leaders are like "Hey, let's just seed some clouds and call it a day" 🙄. I'm all for innovation, but come on, folks! How about investing in actual solutions instead of magic tricks? 💸

Ugh, can't believe they're trying cloud seeding on us 🤦‍♀️! Like, I get that the air quality in Delhi is super bad, but have we thought this through? These professors are right, there's no real research on how it'll affect our health and the environment in the long run. It's just a Band-Aid solution 📦, if you ask me. We need to tackle the root causes of pollution, like transportation emissions and industrial waste. I mean, have they even thought about how this will impact agriculture? That's some important stuff right there! 🌾 And what about the cost? Who's footing the bill for all these chemicals? It just doesn't feel like a sustainable solution to me...

I think this cloud seeding idea might not be the best solution for India's air pollution problem 🤔. I mean, experts are saying it's just a short-term fix without addressing the real issues. It's like putting a Band-Aid on a deeper wound, you know? And what about all the chemicals used in the process? What are the long-term effects on our health and agriculture? We need to think outside the box and find real solutions, not just quick fixes 🌈.

And let's be real, it's not like Delhi is going to magically become clean just because some silver iodide particles fall from the sky 💨. It's a complex problem that needs a multi-faceted approach. We need more research, more investment in public transport and cleaner energy sources... the list goes on 🚗💡.

I'm all for innovation, but let's make sure we're not just throwing money at a problem without thinking it through 💸. The government needs to take a closer look at what they're proposing and think about the bigger picture 📊.

I'm not sure about this whole cloud seeding thing, 🤔. I mean, I get why they want to try something new after all the pollution in Delhi is literally killing people. But 6% increase in pollution levels over the past year? That's still super bad news. And what's with the lack of research on long-term effects? It's like they're just throwing some silver iodide out there and hoping for the best. I'm sure it'll be a nice idea to have artificial rain, but is that really going to make a difference if we don't address the root causes of pollution in the first place? Like, how are they planning to do that? Make pollution controls more effective or something? 💡 It's also weird that it's just some BJP party proposal... what about all the other parties and experts who have been working on this issue for years? 🤷‍♂️

I'm not sure if seeding clouds with silver iodide is the way forward for India... I mean, we've heard about this technique being used in other parts of the world, but I'm not convinced it'll make a huge difference here. The thing that really worries me is what's going to happen after October 29 - are they just gonna stop? That smog problem is always coming back, like the tide.

And can we talk about the root causes for a sec? I think we need to get to the bottom of why Delhi is so polluted in the first place. Is it really that simple to fix with some silver iodide? What about all the industries and vehicles contributing to the pollution? I'm not saying cloud seeding won't help, but let's not forget about the bigger picture here 🤔💡

I gotta say, I'm kinda torn about this whole cloud seeding thing 🤔💨. On one hand, I get why the gov is trying to tackle Delhi's air pollution problem - 6% increase in pollution levels? That's straight up alarming! 😷 But on the other hand, I've seen some movies where scientists are like "we should test this" and then it goes haywire... remember that sci-fi flick where Dr. Strangelove tried to rain down nuclear bombs on the Soviets? 🌪️ Not exactly what you want from your air purification methods.

I think we need to take a step back, though, and have some real discussions about long-term effects on our environment and health. Can't just wing it with a new "fix" without understanding how it's gonna impact us in the future? 🤷‍♀️ Let's see what experts come up with before we start raining down chemicals like they're confetti at a Beyoncé concert 🎉💥

I'm not buying into this cloud seeding idea 🤔. I mean, have they even thought through the long-term effects? Like, what if it starts messing with our water table or something? And what about the chemicals themselves? We're already dealing with toxicity issues in Delhi, do we really want to add more unknowns to the mix? It's just a band-aid solution, you know? 🤷‍♀️ They need to get to the root of the problem, not just mask it with some fancy tech trick. And 29th October is just a date for a photo op... I'll believe it when I see real results! 💦

I'm curious about this cloud seeding thingy... I mean, the idea is kinda cool, but have they thought it through? Like, what if it doesn't work at all? Or what if it makes things worse? 🤔 I get that Delhi's air pollution is a huge problem and the government wants to try something, but can we just take a deep breath (or rather, not release so much pollutants into the air) and think about this for a sec?

I mean, experts are saying it's an unsuitable remedy because it lacks scientific backing... which makes sense. But at the same time, what's the harm in trying? It's not like they're gonna hurt anyone with a few silver iodide particles 😊. And okay, so maybe it's not the perfect solution, but is it worth nothing?

It just seems like we need to take a more holistic approach... I don't know, research more, or something. But can we please just get some rain in Delhi already? The poor people are suffering over there! ☁️

man this cloud seeding thing is like a cool idea but also super sketchy 🤔, i mean what if its not even effective? or whats the deal with using silver iodide particles in clouds anyway? sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie 💫, and 29th october as target date seems way too soon to me... cant they just give it some more time to study the effects on human health and agriculture first? 🤷‍♂️ anyway, i hope its not all hype but at the same time, anything that brings relief from delhi's smog is a good thing 🌞, fingers crossed it works! 💪

Ugh I had the worst time in Delhi last year, my lungs were literally on fire 🤢. I was there for a friend's wedding and we got stuck in this crazy traffic jam during rush hour... anyway, back to this cloud seeding thing... I don't know if it'll make a difference or not, but at least they're trying, right? 🤷‍♀️ I mean, 6% increase in pollution is still super scary, especially with all the health issues we have going on these days. Have you guys ever had to deal with smog that bad? It's literally suffocating 🌫️. And omg did you know I went to a hospital for asthma attacks last year because of Delhi's air quality? 🤦‍♀️ Anyway, fingers crossed it works out and they can get the pollution levels under control... we need clean air, stat! 💨

Ugh, are they serious? Trying to solve India's pollution problem by seeding clouds is just not gonna cut it 🤦‍♂️. I mean, I get it, the city's in a mess and someone needs to do something, but this feels like a Band-Aid on a gunshot wound. What about actually addressing the emissions from all those factories and vehicles? That's what's causing the pollution, not just some magic silver iodide trick 🤑. And don't even get me started on the unknown risks... I'm not buying it 💸. We need real solutions here, not some quick fix that might make things better for a month or two before we're back to square one 📉.

I'm not sure about this cloud seeding thing... I mean, it sounds kinda cool, but I don't think it's the answer to all our problems 🤔. Like, if we're gonna use silver iodide in the clouds, what's stopping us from using some other weird stuff that might cause more harm than good? And have they even tested it out on humans? I mean, I get that pollution is a major issue, but isn't there a better way to tackle it without messing around with random chemicals? Plus, 6% increase in pollution levels is still super scary... shouldn't we be focusing on ways to reduce our emissions and stuff instead of playing with the weather? 🌞😷
