Iran's foreign minister says talks with US 'a very good start', but are 'over for now'.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi has stated that indirect negotiations between Iranian and US officials have been a "very good start" but are set to pause indefinitely. The Oman-mediated talks, which began on Friday, were centered solely on Tehran's nuclear program.
Aragchi made the comments in an interview with Iranian state media, where he said both sides had agreed to proceed with negotiations. However, he emphasized that officials must now speak directly with their leaders before any progress can be made.
The talks have come as a welcome relief after weeks of escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran. US warships and aircraft have amassed near Iranian coastal waters, prompting warnings from Trump that "bad things" could happen if a deal is not reached.
Iran has insisted on keeping the negotiations focused solely on its nuclear program. Iran's right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes was deemed non-negotiable by Aragchi. In exchange, Iran demanded sanctions be lifted.
Araghi also warned of potential repercussions if talks were to fail.
