Judge dismisses Chicago-area use-of-force lawsuit at plaintiffs’ request

Federal Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Restricting Immigration Agents' Use of Force After Strategic Move by Plaintiffs

A US District Court judge in Chicago has dismissed a lawsuit that restricted federal immigration agents' use of force against protesters, clergy, and journalists. The case was brought last fall by plaintiffs, including some from the media, who had sought to limit the use of tear gas, chokeholds, and other forms of force during Operation Midway Blitz, a deportation campaign led by President Donald Trump's administration.

The move to dismiss the lawsuit comes after the judge, Sara Ellis, paused her decision two weeks ago amid concerns about the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Macklin Good by an immigration officer in Minneapolis. The plaintiffs had apparently made the strategic decision to drop the case, potentially avoiding a review by a three-judge panel from the 7th US Circuit Court of Appeals.

The lawsuit had led to several key findings, including that U.S. Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino had lied about using tear gas in Little Village after being hit with a rock. Additionally, Ellis concluded that immigration officials had used excessive force during the operation, resulting in the fatal shooting of Silverio Villegas González.

Despite the dismissal, another case is still moving forward involving the state of Illinois, which claims that federal immigration officials are engaging in an illegal occupation and interfering with state sovereignty. The next hearing in this case is set for February 19.

Lawyers for both sides have expressed interest in sharing discovery materials related to the now-dismissed case, but a Department of Justice attorney has requested a meeting with the plaintiffs' lawyers before proceeding.

I'm low-key relieved that the lawsuit got dismissed lol 😅 I mean, can you imagine if it went through and all those immigration agents had their use of force severely restricted? It would be chaos out there! 🤯 And don't even get me started on the whole "excessive force" thing – what's excessive is the number of people being detained and deported without due process 🚔. I'm not saying the cops shouldn't be held accountable, but come on, we need to find a balance here 🤝. And now that the case is off the table, let's focus on the next one that's trying to take down the feds for allegedly taking over the state of Illinois 🚫 – bring it on! 💪

omg can't believe the judge just dismissed that lawsuit 🙅‍♂️ it's like the authorities are above the law lol but seriously though this is kinda concerning because we had some major evidence about the use of force against protesters and journalists...like who gets shot for throwing a rock at an immigration officer? Renee Nicole Macklin Good was a 24-year-old journalist and she died in front of our eyes 🤯 it's not right.

anyway, i guess the plaintiffs made a strategic move by dropping the case, but it's weird that they would do that without even appealing to a higher court first...i'm kinda curious to see what happens next with the Illinois case though 🤔 maybe we'll finally get some answers about who's in charge here.

just had a bad feeling about this one 🤕... cant believe the judge just let immigration agents get away with using excessive force against innocent ppl 😡. Renee Nicole Macklin Good's family deserves justice, and now her death is being swept under the rug 👎. meanwhile, another case is moving forward in Illinois... hopefully they can finally hold those officials accountable 💪. we need more transparency and accountability from our government 👀. cant let them keep pushing boundaries and getting away with it 🚫

aww man... can you believe it? 🤕 another judge dismissing a lawsuit about police brutality and immigration issues... meanwhile, we got more cases moving forward, like that one in Illinois where they're saying federal officials are just overstepping their bounds... it's like, what's the message here? 😩 we need more accountability on both sides. The government needs to start taking responsibility for these actions and making changes, while also listening to the concerns of those affected. 🗣️

omg I cant believe the judge just got out of scot free 🤣 like what even is the point of having laws if u can just dismiss them w/ no consequences lol? I mean I get it, politics and power plays can be a wild game, but come on people! Can't we just have some semblance of accountability for our law enforcement agencies? This whole thing just smells like another Trump admin cover-up 🚮. But hey at least the media folks were able to drop their case, so I guess that's kinda win-win? 🤷‍♀️

omg u can imagine being surrounded by tear gas and having no idea what's happening 🤯... i was covering immigration rallies back in 2018 and it felt like we were just pawns in a game 😒. anyway, i'm not surprised this case got dismissed - the gov is really good at pushing limits & making ppl play by their rules 💁‍♀️. but idk about the state of illinois case... sounds like they're trying to take on the feds again 🤖. either way, we should be seeing more stories about immigration & protest tactics coming out - it's high time someone shed some light on this 🔦

omg can u believe what's been goin on w/ immigration agents? they're literally gettin away w/ all kinds of stuff 🤯 i'm so confused, like, why do they need to use tear gas and chokeholds in the first place? shouldn't dey just b tryin' 2 have a respectful convo w/ ppl 🤷‍♀️ anyway, it's kinda sad that the judge had 2 pause her decision cuz of dat shooting 😕 hopefully, it means somethin' good will come outta this... maybe we'll get some real changes made 💡

OMG 🤯 just heard about the federal judge dismissing that lawsuit about immigration agents using force against protesters 🚫👮‍♂️ it's like, super crazy right? I mean, what if those deportation ops were way more intense than we thought? 😱 The fact that the plaintiffs dropped the case is kinda suspicious tho... was it a strategic move to avoid some serious scrutiny from a 3-judge panel 🤔?

Anywayz, another case is still moving forward about Illinois claiming federal immigration officials are taking over their state 🌊🚫 and interfering with sovereignty 😂. We'll have to keep an eye on that one 👀. The DOJ is being super chill about sharing discovery materials tho... like, can we get some tea? ☕

man I'm so tired of these immigration issues 🤯 it's like the gov't is stuck on this forever loop and nothing ever changes ... any way, so there was this lawsuit that got dismissed after some big move by the plaintiffs, right? apparently they dropped it to avoid a higher court from reviewing it and i gotta say, it's kinda fishy how the judge paused her decision after that shooting happened 🤷‍♂️ like what if she had actually made a ruling back then? would things be different now?

anywayz, there are still some other cases going on like one in Illinois that says federal immigration officials are messing with state sovereignty and stuff... it's wild to think about how complex this all is 🤯

just saw this news and my mind's blowing 🤯 so they just dropped the lawsuit against immigration agents using force on protesters and journalists? like what's going on? didn't we learn from Silverio Villegas González 😔 poor guy was shot by an immigration officer and now no one's holding anyone accountable? it's like, can't we get some justice here? 💔 I mean, the judge paused her decision for a reason and now just dropped it? what changed? 🤷‍♀️ did the plaintiffs not want to take it all the way to a three-judge panel or something? anyway, this whole thing is super disturbing 😓.

man... can't believe this 🤯 like how far are we from true justice? these immigration agents just roaming around, using force left and right... it's like they think they're above the law? 🚫 and now this judge, Sara Ellis, just dismisses the whole thing because of a strategic move by the plaintiffs... but what about all those people affected by Operation Midway Blitz? didn't their voices even matter? 😔 and that fatal shooting... still no accountability? it's like we're stuck in some kind of never-ending loop 🔄

🤔 I gotta say, it's pretty frustrating when you feel like justice is being side-lined. This whole thing feels like a huge setback for people who were just trying to hold those immigration agents accountable for their actions. I mean, Renee Macklin Good's mom was still grieving over her daughter's death and now this lawsuit gets dismissed? It's hard to see how the law is supposed to work when it seems like those in power can just push through whatever they want without any real consequences.

The part that really got my goat is that the judge basically gave up because of a strategic move by the plaintiffs. Like, what's the point of even having a court system if we're not gonna hold people accountable? I know some people might be thinking about the bigger picture and how this all ties into the state sovereignty thing in Illinois, but from where I'm sitting, it just feels like more of the same old power play.

Anyway, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens next 🤞.
