'Just an unbelievable amount of pollution': how big a threat is AI to the climate?

I think it's super important that we don't just blame AI for all our climate problems 🤔. I mean, we're using it more and more every day, so if we can design tools that are sustainable from the start, we'll be golden 💚. And yeah, datacentres do guzzle energy, but maybe we could invest in more renewable sources to power them? It's all about balance, you know? 😊 We need AI to help us figure out how to reduce our carbon footprint, not just add to it 🌎. What do u think? Should we be regulating the industry or designing frugal tools from scratch? 🤔
 
I'm all for using AI to tackle climate change, but I gotta be real, it's like, the carbon footprint of datacentres is getting outta control 🤯! I'm not sure about all this hype around AI saving the planet... 🤔 I mean, isn't it a bit of an exaggeration? We're still dealing with companies that can't even get their datacentre energy consumption right and now we need to add "save the planet" to their to-do list? 😒

I'm not saying it's all bad, but what about all those greenwashing ads AI generates? Isn't that just a fancy way of telling us to keep buying stuff we don't need? 📈 And what about the pollution from datacentres themselves? Like, have you seen the servers in there? Those things are powerhouses... 💥

And then there's the idea that AI can accelerate clean tech development. Sounds great on paper, but how do we actually track progress and make sure it's not just a bunch of green PR? 📊 What evidence do we have that this is going to work?
