Keir Starmer keeps Trumps' silver necklace gift – for a price

Labour leader Keir Starmer has kept a £400+ silver necklace given to him by Donald Trump for 'a price', according to transparency records. The gift was one of several presented during the former US President's historic second state visit in September, which also included a golf club and silver cufflinks.

However, Starmer chose not to keep other gifts from the Trumps, including the Cabinet Office, which retained items such as cowboy boots given to his wife Victoria. The rules state that ministers cannot keep official gifts worth over £140 unless they pay the difference between this threshold and the gift's value.

Starmer gave the president a red box embossed with presidential seal and title during the visit at Windsor Castle. This is not the first controversy surrounding gifts exchanged between US presidents and British prime ministers, as seen in the case of Gordon Brown and Barack Obama, where Obama's DVD box set was perceived as a diplomatic blunder.

A more significant example of controversy surrounding Trump gift-giving can be found with Qatar, which gave him a $400m (£305m) luxury Boeing 747 to serve as Air Force One. This has generated backlash in the US due to its high cost and perceived extravagance.

🤑💎 come on, £400+ is a pretty standard gift for a world leader, you'd think 🤷‍♂️ starmer's just trying to avoid some tax debt or something, keep it for yourself 😏 wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even know the rules and just decided to take what Trump gave him. still, gotta wonder why other gifts were ignored, like that crazy cowboy boots... did someone say 'no way, Victoria' 🤣

I'm so done with these fancy gifts from world leaders 🤣! Like, what's up with Keir Starmer keeping that £400+ silver necklace for "a price"?! It's not like he's trying to make friends or build a legacy – it just seems like he's trying to butter up Trump and get ahead. And don't even get me started on the whole £140 threshold thing, if you're gonna keep it, why not just pay the difference, right? 🤷‍♀️

And can we talk about how extravagant Trump's gifts are?! A $400m luxury plane? That's wild! 😂 I mean, what's next, a private island?! It's like he thinks he's some kind of superhero or something. And let's not forget Gordon Brown and Barack Obama's gift-giving faux pas – we've come a long way since then, but it still seems like these gifts are more about one-upping each other than actual diplomacy 💁‍♀️.

🤔 I'm not surprised about Keir Starmer's necklace from Donald Trump 🤑... like, who wouldn't want a £400+ silver necklace, right? 😂 But seriously, 65% of Brits think it's weird that politicians don't have to return gifts above the £140 threshold unless they pay the difference 💸. Meanwhile, Trump's $400m Boeing 747 gift to Qatar is just crazy 🤯... if we're talking about gifting, that's like buying a private island or something 🌴! Did you know that since 2010, UK politicians have received over £10m worth of gifts? 🤑 That's a lot of fancy stuff! 🎁 And let's not forget, the average cost of a gift from a head of state is around £5k - £10k... so I guess £400 necklaces are just the norm now 😅. Anyway, here are some stats on UK politician gifts: 75% have been from Commonwealth nations, and 40% were from US presidents 🤝.

Wow 💎🤔 - I mean, come on £400+ for a necklace? It's just weird that he kept it 😅. And what's up with the other gifts not being accepted? The Trumps seem to have no problem splurging their cash but Starmer is all like "no thanks" 🙄.

i'm not sure why this is such a big deal... i mean, it's just a necklace 😐. £400+ seems like a lot of money, but you'd think it's the least of Keir Starmer's worries considering all the other issues going on in the world. and honestly, i feel bad for him having to make this decision about keeping or giving back gifts 🤔. does anyone really know what happened between Trump and Starmer? was it just a weird gesture or something more? the lack of transparency around these gift exchanges is kinda suspicious imo 🙃.

Umm, I think it's kinda weird that Keir Starmer kept the £400+ necklace from Trump but not the other gifts? 🤔 I mean, some people might say it's just common sense to follow the rules and pay back the difference if you can afford it, but others might be like, "Hey, he got a super valuable necklace, why shouldn't he keep that?" 💎 On the other hand, the cowboy boots from Victoria are kinda cool... 🤠 I dunno, maybe I'm just saying this 'cause I love boots, and Starmer's wife looks nice in them 😊. What do we really know about the gift-giving rules, anyway? Are they enforced properly? Should politicians be expected to return gifts no matter what? It's all kinda confusing... 🤷‍♀️

🤔 I'm kinda surprised Keir Starmer kept that silver necklace tho 🤑 like isn't it supposed to be a rule that ministers gotta pay back the difference if they keep gifts over £140? 😕

I think it's kinda weird that Keir Starmer kept that £400+ necklace but didn't take other gifts... like, what was he thinking? 🤔 I mean, the rules are clear, so either keep them or pay for 'em. It sounds like he just decided to be a bit tricky about it 😏. I'm not saying he did anything wrong, but it does seem a bit dodgy. The Trumps do know how to throw a party though, right? That £400m Boeing thing they got him was just insane! 💸

OMG 🤯 what's up w/ these rich guys giving out expensive gifts like they're on a shopping spree? I mean, £400+ silver necklace from Trump is just wild 💎👀 But it makes sense that Starmer sold it, I get why he wouldn't wanna keep all the "gifts" lol 😂. And can we talk about Qatar's gift of a private plane?!?! $400m?!?! That's insane 🚀💸 What even is that supposed to accomplish? Diplomacy doesn't have to break the bank, right? And what's up w/ these guys trying to one-up each other w/ their fancy gifts? It's just awkward 🤪. Anyway, I'm not gonna lie, it's kinda amusing to see all this drama go down 💁‍♀️

I'm not sure what's more surprising about Keir Starmer keeping that £400+ silver necklace from Donald Trump - the fact that he did keep it or that we're even talking about this sort of thing 🤯. I mean, come on, a price tag is a pretty low bar for accepting gifts from world leaders, right? And what's with all these expensive gifts anyway? A luxury Boeing 747? That's just crazy talk 💸. I get it, gestures like that can be seen as extravagant and awkward, but can't we just have a more nuanced conversation about the value of diplomacy? 🤔 Maybe instead of focusing on what's being given, we could talk about what kind of impact these gifts can have on our relationships with other countries? That would be a much more meaningful use of our time and energy 🌟.

can you believe keir starmer kept that £400+ silver necklace from donald trump but his wife didnt keep other gifts? what's up with that 🤔 and btw, if a £305m plane is too much for them to handle, why cant they just pay the difference like normal people do 💸

🤔 What's up with these politicos and their love for fancy gifts? I mean, £400+ silver necklace is a bit steep, even if it was given by Trump himself. It's like they're more interested in flaunting their wealth than doing the people's business. And what's with the transparency records? Can't they just be honest about it? 🤑

Wow 💸 like how transparent Keir Starmer is about keeping or giving back the gift from Donald Trump, but £400+ is still a lot of dough 💰! Interesting that Victoria kept cowboy boots though, must be for her next country music concert 🤠🎶

omg did u no that keir starmer got a super expensive necklace from donald trump?? like £400+ it's crazy! why didnt he just pay for it tho? 🤔 i mean, i get it, rules are rules, but come on... and btw, what's up with the cowboy boots tho? Victoria getting a pair is kinda weird 🤷‍♀️
