Matthew McConaughey Throws His Hat into the Ring for Texas Governor, But First He's Hosting a Concert to Help His Home State Recover from Devastating Winter Storm.
Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey has announced that he is considering running for governor of Texas, but first, he and his wife Camila Alves are hosting a virtual benefit concert to help the state recover from the devastating winter storm that left hundreds of thousands without power, heat, or clean water.
The "We're Texas" benefit concert, set to air on March 21, will feature an all-star lineup of performers including Kacey Musgraves, Kelly Clarkson, and Willie Nelson. McConaughey revealed that the idea for the concert came about after he and his wife were discussing ways to help their home state in response to the crisis.
"We came up with the idea of a benefit," McConaughey said on CBS This Morning. "And then I get on the phone, and in 30 seconds β every performer, every Texas business, every sports star is like 'Yes, what do you need me to do, tell me when and where, I'm in.'"
The concert is just one step in McConaughey's plan to help his home state. When asked if he would consider running for governor, McConaughey said he was "giving it consideration" and that he wouldn't be a fool not to take on the role.
"It's a very honorable thing to consider," he said. "What would it mean for the people of Texas? What would it mean for me?"
However, McConaughey declined to comment on a possible Senate run, citing the recent controversy surrounding Senator Ted Cruz's trip to Cancun while millions of his constituents were struggling.
The benefit concert will air at 7 p.m. Central Time and can be streamed on the Just Keep Livin' Foundation website. McConaughey expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from people across Texas and beyond, saying they are "happy with where we are."
