MBTA police issue plea for cold case info 17 years after teen’s murder

Seventeen years after a 16-year-old boy from Roxbury was brutally murdered on an MBTA bus in Dorchester, police are still seeking information about the case. Devonte Franklin's lifeless body was found on December 31, 2008, at around 9:30 p.m., while he was riding on a bus running on Route 28 near Blue Hill Avenue and Harvard Street.

According to authorities, an altercation took place on the bus, but the exact cause of it and with whom Franklin was involved remains unknown. He was taken to Boston Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation into Franklin's murder initially stalled, but transit police have continued to pursue leads. In 2012, his mother, Aretha Maugé, participated in a charity walk to raise awareness about street violence in Boston. She shared her son's tragic story, stating that before his death, Franklin was struggling with bullying at school and the emotional toll of his parents' separation.

The police have now issued an appeal for anyone with information about Franklin's murder to come forward. They urge potential witnesses or informants to call their CIU (Crime Information Unit) at 617-222-1050. The police emphasize that any information, no matter how small it may seem, could be crucial in helping them solve the case and bring justice to Devonte Franklin and his family.

As the years have gone by, the public's attention has waned on this tragic event, leaving a sense of hopelessness surrounding Franklin's unsolved murder. The MBTA Transit Police are now pushing for renewed vigilance from the community, hoping that someone may remember a crucial detail or know of a witness who can provide valuable insights into this devastating crime.

It is imperative that the public shares any information they have about this case to help bring closure to the Franklin family and ensure that his memory is not forgotten.

man I cant believe its been 17 years since devonte was brutally murdered on that bus like what happened to him just cuz he got bullied in school? my grandma went thru something similar when she was a kid and it broke her heart thinking about what that kid had to go thru & his parents getting divorced too thats so much to handle. we gotta get the community together to share any info they have or remember anything weird from back then, it cant hurt & its not fair he got left behind like this 🤕🚨

I'm really sad about this, it's been 17 years since Devonte Franklin died and still no one knows what happened on that bus 🤕. I think it's crazy that the police are still looking for info after all these years. They should've solved it by now.

I heard his mom, Aretha Maugé, was involved in a charity walk back in 2012 to raise awareness about street violence in Boston. That's really admirable of her, but I wish more people had come forward with information at the time. Now, it's like a cold case or something 🤔.

I'm worried that if someone did see something that night, they might not even remember it anymore. That's why this appeal for info is so important. The police are saying anything counts, no matter how small it seems. I hope they get some new leads and finally solve the case 💡.

I'm so sick of this stuff! 🤕 17 yrs gone by & still no one's talkin'? What's up with that?! It's like, your kid gets taken away from you, life is ruined... meanwhile, they're just sittin' around collectin' a paycheck. I mean, I get it, investigations take time but come on! Can't we at least show some love to the family? 🤗 14 yrs old, his mum had to raise him alone after dad & mom split up too... that's a whole lotta emotional weight for one kid to carry. And now he's gone?! The system's gotta do better than this.

ugh im so sorry to hear about devonte's story it feels like ages since he passed away i remember watching news clips of the charity walk back in 2012 my mom was actually talking about how her son struggled with school stuff and their parents getting divorced i feel like we should all be thinking about that poor kid and his family right now still so many questions unanswered its crazy theyre re-releasing an appeal for info lol hope someone comes forward soon

Ugh I'm getting chills thinking about this poor kid 😩 Devonte's story is heartbreaking, especially with all the stuff he was going through at school & home... bullying & parental separation 🤕 it's just so senseless 💔. 17 yrs later & his family still deserves answers 💪 the public should really come forward if they remember anything, no matter how small it seems 📝 617-222-1050? Let's get some closure for Aretha & her fam 👫. We gotta do better as a community to look out for each other, especially on public transportation 🚂👮‍♀️

.. 17 years gone by already 🤯, thinkin' 'bout what could've been if they caught that killer... it's like, we gotta remember our past, you know? We can't let all those memories fade away like the bus that took Devonte to his grave 😔. His story's still relevant, even now. It's a reminder that we're all just one wrong move away from tragedy. We should all be askin' ourselves what would I do if it was my loved one who got caught up in somethin' like this? 🤷‍♂️

We gotta keep pushin' for answers, no matter how small they seem. It's like, we can't just sit around waitin' for the police to catch a break... we gotta be the ones makin' it happen 🎯. I mean, think about all the times you've seen or heard somethin' that you brushed off 'cause it didn't seem important at the time? Now's the time to give those memories a second look 🔍.

We owe it to Devonte and his family to keep this story in our minds and to be vigilant. We can make a difference, one piece of info at a time 💡.

man this is so sad 🤕 its been 17 yrs since devonte passed away and still no one knows who did it? you would think that by now someone would've come forward with some info, but i guess that's just how it goes sometimes... the fact that his mom had to raise awareness about bullying and emotional trauma after his death is just heartbreaking 😔 anyway, i'm glad the transit police are still pushing for leads and trying to get justice for devonte and his fam... 617-222-1050 is the number to call if u got any info! 📞 lets keep spreading awareness and hoping that someone out there remembers something that could help solve this case 💡

🤯 The fact that it's been 17 years and the police are still seeking info on this case is just mind-blowing, you feel? I mean, how many times do people need to be reminded of the importance of coming forward with info before someone finally speaks up? 🤔

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how 17 years have passed since Devonte's murder and nothing's been done about it 🤯🚫. The fact that the police are still asking for info like they're solving a cold case from yesterday is just so...exhausting 😒. And yeah, I'm sure his mom's charity walk was super inspiring and all that jazz 💔. But what's even more frustrating is how we've all moved on with our lives while Devonte's family is still waiting for answers 🕰️. I mean, come on, can't anyone remember anything? 🤦‍♂️ The fact that the public's attention has waned makes me wonder if this case was ever even taken seriously in the first place 🤔. It's like Devonte just disappeared into thin air...what a waste 💀

Ugh man I cant even believe its been 17 yrs since devonte went thru this 😩🤕 like what happened to him? was it just a random act of violence or was there more 2 it? u no, the mta should really do more 2 help keep these ppl safe on public transportation 🚂💡 and btw, im so sorry 4 devontes family & friends who r still dealin w/ this 😢💔

🚫🤕 Still can't believe it's been 17 yrs since Devonte Franklin passed away 😔. I remember watching news clips back in 2008 & feeling so helpless. It's sad to see that nothing's changed, the community still isn't talking about it 🤷‍♀️. His mom should get some help tho, she's been thru hell for far too long 💔.

The police are doing a good job keeping the case alive but they need our help, ppl! 🚨👀 We gotta keep reminding ourselves that even small info can help crack it 🔍. I'm not gonna lie, it's scary thinking about how many witnesses might've been there & not spoken up 🤔. What if someone sees this now & thinks 'oh yeah, I remember something' 🙏? That'd be amazing! Let's make sure we don't let Devonte's memory fade away 💭.

TBH, it's kinda messed up that the case went cold in the first place 🚫. You gotta wonder what could've been done differently 🤔. Maybe they should re-interview witnesses or get new tips 📝? Anyone got ideas?

ugh i'm like so sorry devonte franklin's mom must be still hurting all these yrs later 🤕 it's crazy how much time has passed and the investigation is still ongoing 🕰️ i remember this story yrs ago when it happened & my heart just broke for u & ur fam lol i dont think its weird at all that ppl r still searching 4 answers & trying 2 bring justice 2 u even tho its been 17 yrs 🙏

Still can't believe it's been 17 yrs since Devonte Franklin passed away 🤕💔 He was so young, just a teenager with his whole life ahead of him. I'm literally getting chills thinking about what happened to him on that bus... The fact that the police are still searching for info is super impressive btw 👏 617-222-1050 is the number to call if u got any leads 📞 It's heartbreaking that the public's attention has waned over the yrs, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someone will come forward with a clue! 🤞 We gotta keep the memory of Devonte alive and fight for justice 4 him & his fam 💪 #JusticeForDevonte #RememberDevonte #MBTAPolice

man this is crazy 17 yrs gone by & still no one knows what happened on that bus 🤯 how many ppl just sit there while somethin goes down on public transport? gotta give it up for devontes mom tho, raisin awareness like that takes a lot of guts 💪 anyone with info gotta come forward, can't let this case stay unsolved 4eva 🚫

I don't usually comment but... this is just so sad, you know? 17 years is a long time, and I'm sure it's really tough on Devonte's family, especially Aretha Maugé. It's crazy how the public's attention can wane like that. I feel like we should be doing more to help the police solve this case 🤔💡.

I don't know if anyone remembers what happened back then, but it's possible someone saw or heard something and didn't think much of it at the time 🚨👀. Any info no matter how small could really make a difference here. Let's all try to keep this on our minds and hope that someone comes forward with something new 💪🕰️.

It's just... Devonte was only 16, and he died in such a senseless way 🤯😔. His story deserves justice, and we should be pushing for it too 💥👮‍♂️.

Man, its been ages since Devonte Franklin passed away 🤕... 17 years, thats crazy! I remember hearing about it back in the day, it was a super sad story. My grandma used to tell me about how he just wanted to live his life and go to school without all that drama going on in his life, but unfortunately, that didn't happen.

It's wild that they're still trying to figure out what happened on that bus 🚌... I'm hoping that someone might come forward with some info now. His mom did a charity walk back in 2012 and raised awareness about street violence in Boston... its good to see her keeping his memory alive ❤️.

Its frustrating when stuff like this gets pushed under the rug, you know? But hey, I'm sure the police are still working hard on it and they're asking for the public's help 🤝. We gotta share any info we might have, even if it seems small... its better than nothing!

This is just too sad 🤕😔 My heart goes out to Devonte's family, especially his mom Aretha Maugé who has been carrying this burden for so long. I feel like 17 years is forever, it's like a whole generation has grown up without knowing what happened to him. I'm hoping that someone out there remembers something or knows a witness who can help crack the case 🚔💡 Please, if you have any info, come forward and share it! You never know how much it could mean to the Franklin family 💕
