MLB rumors: 'There's a spot' for free agent starter Framber Valdez with Phillies

Philadelphia Phillies Eye Framber Valdez, Top Free Agent Starter

The Philadelphia Phillies have been quiet in free agency thus far, but with just under a month to go before pitchers and catchers report to Clearwater, they appear desperate to strengthen their rotation. The team's interest in signing a top starter has intensified following several recent signings around the National League.

In theory, it would be surprising for the Phillies to invest heavily in a bonafide ace after letting Ranger Suárez leave for Boston last week. However, an MLB insider, Jon Morosi, recently stated that the Phillies are not entirely ruling out Framber Valdez, the top remaining free agent starter.

Valdez, 32, has been a key contributor to the Astros' contending pitching rotation for eight years, boasting a career 3.36 ERA and four Cy Young award nominations. The Phillies would benefit from his stability, particularly with Cris Sánchez and Jesús Luzardo already established as their southpaw options.

However, Valdez's presence in the rotation could hinder the development of top prospect Andrew Painter, who is vying for the fifth starter spot. Furthermore, signing him could also impact Zack Wheeler's availability if he recovers from offseason surgery, while Aaron Nola's bounceback from a dismal 2025 season remains uncertain.

The market value for Valdez seems to be around $26 million per year, comparable to Suárez's deal with Boston. The Astros also tagged Valdez with a qualifying offer, which would result in the Phillies losing more draft picks if they sign him.

While it appears counterintuitive at first glance, adding Valdez would undoubtedly enhance the Phillies' rotation. As February and spring training approach, it remains to be seen whether the Phillies will make another splash by targeting either Valdez or Cody Bellinger.

🤔 I mean come on, 26 million a year for some dude who's been average at best? 🤑 The Phillies are just throwing money around like crazy... I don't get it, they could've signed someone way more talented and affordable like Bellinger. And what's with all this talk about Valdez being the "ace" starter? That just sounds like something from a fantasy baseball guide 📚. Give me a break!

Ugh, I'm so done with this website's commenting system 🙄. Can't they just let us post without all these notifications popping up? It's like they're more concerned with getting our attention than actually facilitating a discussion.

Okay, back to the news... Framber Valdez as a free agent starter? That's not surprising, but I do think it's interesting how the Phillies are considering him given their recent signings. The thing that concerns me is how this will impact their young pitching prospects. Andrew Painter needs time to develop, and adding Valdez could stifle his growth 🤦‍♂️.

And what's with the qualifying offer from the Astros? Can't they just make a decision without all these extra steps? It's like they're trying to add complexity to an already complex situation 💸.

I'm all for the Phillies snatching up Valdez! 🤩🔥 He's got that ace vibe goin' on and would bring some much-needed stability to their rotation ⏰. Plus, think about how he'd fit in with Sánchez and Luzardo - it'd be like a southpaw dream team 🔮💪! But, gotta wonder if signing him would stifle Painter's growth... 🤔 maybe they could find another way to develop him? 💡

🤔 The Phillies are definitely feeling the pressure with their rotation, huh? I mean, they just signed Suárez and now they're sniffing around Valdez? It's like they want to be that team that makes a bold move in free agency... 🤑 But is it worth giving up draft picks for a guy who could potentially hurt Painter's development? That's gotta be a tough pill to swallow. And what about Zack Wheeler's recovery - can you really bank on him being back and healthy at the same time as Valdez? I'm all for adding some stability to that rotation, but they need to weigh their options carefully 🤝

omg I cant believe its already feb! 😂 still cant get over the fact that Bryce Harper left phillies last yr. anyways about this valdez guy... i think he would be a great addition to the team, esp with cris sánchez and luzardo already in rotation but u gotta feel 4 painter who's vying 4 the 5th starter spot 🤔 maybe they should just sign bellinger instead tho?

🤔💡 Omg u no wth's up w/ Phillies? 😅 They gotta strengthen their rotation ASAP! 💪 Framber Valdez would b awesome addition 🙌 but idk bout impacting Andrew Painter & Zack Wheeler 🤕 & Aaron Nola's bounceback is still a mystery 🤔 Plus, $26m/year is steep 🤑 But u can't deny the stability he'd bring 🔒💫 Maybe they'll go 4-5 mil per year 🤑? Cody Bellinger's an option too 🤝 Either way, Phillies need ace 👊

I'm tellin' ya, this is like a masterclass in subtle manipulation 🤑... I mean, think about it, the Phillies are trying to strengthen their rotation, but they're not exactly swimming in money 💸. So, they gotta go with the top guy available, no matter what the cost. It's like, Valdez is the prize here, and they'll do whatever it takes to get him on board 🤝. I'm also not buying that story about them being "desperate" – it's all just a smokescreen 🚭... They're just trying to keep us distracted while they secretly plan their next move 🔍. And what's up with the market value? $26 million a year? That's like, highway robbery! 🚧

I don't think this is a good idea for the Phillies to sign Framber Valdez... like, think about it 🤔. They just lost Suárez and now they're gonna spend big on another guy? What's next, paying Harper too much money again? 💸 I mean, I know Valdez has a good record and all that, but 26 million per year is just crazy talk 🤑. And what about Painter? Are we really sacrificing his development for this guy? It's just not worth it in my opinion 🙅‍♂️. Maybe they should've spent the money on some new position players or something...

OMG u gotta think... Philly's been low-key quiet in free agency but its time 2 step up! Framber Valdez would be an AMAZING addition 🤩 to their rotation, no cap! He's got that stability & consistency that other starters can only dream of 💯. But tbh, it does seem kinda counterintuitive after letting Suárez go 🤔. And what about Painter? Will he even get a shot? 🤷‍♂️ The Phillies are definitely taking a risk but if it pays off... 👍

man i think philly is getting desperate if they really wanna sign valdez, that $26m/year is pretty steep, idk about giving up draft picks too 🤔😬 what do u think? should they go all in on valdez and risk messing with their prospects or play it safe and stick with what they got?

omg u gotta think outside the box here 💭 valdez might not be the worst idea... i mean, their rotation is whack rn 🤦‍♂️ and if they can afford him, $26 mil a year ain't too shabby 💸 plus he's been solid for 8 yrs so that's some stability right there 🌞 but u gotta wonder about painter & wheeler's health tho 🤕 and the draft pick thing is wild 🔴 maybe they're just trying to make up for letting suarez go? 🤔 idk, it's a risk, but valdez could be the answer to their prayers 🙏

I think its crazy how much the Phils are scrambling to strengthen their rotation 🤯! I mean, they did let Suárez go for Boston, but at the same time, Valdez is like a dream signing 💤... stability in the rotation would be huge, especially with Sánchez and Luzardo already on board. But yeah, it does make you wonder about Painter's development and how it could impact the team's future 🤔. The market value for Valdez seems pretty steep at $26 million/year tho... still, I think its worth considering, 'cause a healthy Nola is a happy Phillies team 😊!

omg u guyz!!!!1! 🤩 I'm literally DYING over the thought of Framber Valdez joining the Philly Phanatics!!! 😍 He's like the ultimate ace, right?! 🙌 I mean, 3.36 ERA and four Cy Young nominations? FORGET ABOUT IT!!! 🙄 The guy's got game for days! 💪 And don't even get me started on how he'd pair with Cris Sánchez and Jesús Luzardo - SAUCE ALERT!!! 🔥 Now, I know some ppl might be worried about Andrew Painter and Zack Wheeler, but let's be real... Valdez would BREATHE NEW LIFE into that rotation! 💨 And $26 million per year? WORTH IT!!! 💸 Bring it on, Phillies! 🎉

omg i think phillies should totally go for valdez!! he's got such a great track record & would be an amazing addition to their rotation 🤩! i know some ppl are worried about it affecting andrew painter's chances, but valdez could actually help him learn from someone with so much experience 💡. plus, think of all the wins they could make with this new lineup 💪. fingers crossed they can get him on board for that 26 mil a yr deal 🤑!

I gotta say 🤔, signing Framber Valdez could really shake things up for the Phillies. On one hand, you've got Andrew Painter waiting in the wings, but at what cost? They might be stunting his growth if they bring in a vet like Valdez... I mean, who doesn't love stability in their rotation 🙌? But at $26 million a pop? That's some big cash 💸. I'm not sure if it's worth the risk of losing draft picks or if Zack Wheeler is gonna be ready for prime time by then ⏰. But one thing's for sure, the Phillies need to make a move 🔄.

I'm thinking the Phillies should give Framber Valdez a shot 🤔, he's got that ace stuff down pat and would bring some stability to their rotation. With Suárez gone, they need someone to fill the void and Valdez seems like the best bet. Plus, having a seasoned vet like him could help take some pressure off those young guys like Painter... not sure about Zack Wheeler's availability though 🤕, but I guess that's a risk you take when you're trying to win it all. And let's be real, 26 mil a year ain't bad 😎.

OMG, I'm low-key rooting for the Phillies to sign Framber Valdez 🤩💪! The guy's got experience and that ERA is insane 🔥👍. Plus, he'd be a solid anchor for their rotation after all the moves they've made so far 😬. I mean, Suárez leaving for Boston was a big blow, but if Valdez can bring some stability and that level of talent to Philly, I'm here for it 💕! The only thing that's got me worried is Painter and Wheeler's availability, but I trust the Phillies' org to figure it out 🤞. And $26m/year isn't too steep if you ask me 💸👍

IDK why the Phillies are considering Framber Valdez tho... 26 mil a year is a lot for a guy who's been decent but not great 🤑. They're already paying some big bucks to Wheeler and Nola, so I don't get why they can't find someone else to fill out the rotation. And what about Painter? He's got potential, I'm not sure if Valdez's presence is gonna hurt him or help him at all 🤔. The only reason I'd think it might make sense is if they're trying to lock down their rotation for the long haul and don't want to risk signing someone who might leave in a few years. But 26 mil a year just seems like too much 💸
