Multi-site ceremony opens Milan Cortina Winter Olympics

Milan, Italy kicked off the 2026 Winter Olympics in style on Friday with a four-site ceremony that was more like a cultural extravaganza than an Olympic spectacle. The dual-cauldron opening ceremony featured tributes to Italian icons such as Da Vinci, Dante, Puccini, and Fellini, as well as nods to Italian cuisine and culture.

The event began at the San Siro soccer stadium in Milan, where athletes from around 150 countries gathered for the Parade of Nations. However, due to logistical issues, athletes from some of the first five countries – Greece, Albania, Andorra, Saudi Arabia, and Argentina – failed to show up, leaving them empty-handed.

The ceremony was attended by 61,000 ticket-holders plus others, who filled the San Siro stadium with a mix of cheers and jeers. The loudest applause came for host Italy, which walked in last, to an electronic version of "The Barber of Seville." Meanwhile, athletes from other countries received more muted receptions.

The ceremony was meant to convey themes of harmony and peace, but the presence of Vice President JD Vance on the video board sparked a backlash among American allies who have been critical of his views on foreign policy. However, athletes from countries such as Venezuela and Ukraine were warmly welcomed.

A highlight of the event came when tenor Andrea Bocelli performed Puccini's "Nessun Dorma," with its iconic refrain "Vincerò." The ceremony also featured a runway walk showcasing outfits designed by Giorgio Armani, balladeer Laura Pausini singing Italy's national anthem, and even a cameo from Mariah Carey performing in Italian.

The multi-site ceremony format allowed for various Winter Games sports to be represented without requiring athletes to travel long distances. This included Alpine skiing, bobsled, curling, and snowboarding, all of which will take place over the next two-plus weeks.

Overall, while there were some awkward moments during the ceremony, it was clear that Italy wanted to showcase its rich culture and heritage to the world.

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s kinda weird how some countries didn’t show up 🤔... Like, Greece and Albania are totally in the game for the Olympics, so it’s pretty sus that they skipped the Parade of Nations 🚫. And what was up with JD Vance on the video board tho? I don’t get why his presence caused a stir 🤷‍♂️. I mean, Italy did its thing and all, but maybe they could’ve handled some of those awkward moments better 👏... the performance by Andrea Bocelli was pretty lit though 🔥!

idk why people are hating on this ceremony 🤷‍♂️... i mean, sure it's not your typical olympic opening, but it was actually kinda cool 😎 seeing all these different cultures represented like that. i loved the tributes to italian icons - da vinci, dante, etc... it felt really special 💫 and the music was fire 🔥 mariah carey performing in italian? yeah! 👏 also, gotta give props to the athletes who were warmly welcomed despite some countries having issues 🤝 and btw, i don't get why people are making a big deal about vice president vance on the video board 🙄 it's just a video, not that deep 😎

😊👏 I mean, I gotta say, that opening ceremony in Milan was wild 🤯! I love how they brought together all these iconic Italian figures like Da Vinci and Puccini, and even threw in some famous faces like Mariah Carey 🎤! It's clear Italy wanted to give the world a taste of their rich culture and heritage. The Parade of Nations was lit 🔥, minus those countries that bailed on us 🙄. But you can't deny the energy of the crowd, especially when they were cheering on the Italians 👏. And let's be real, Andrea Bocelli's performance was EVERYTHING 💖! However, it would've been nice if they didn't bring up Vice President Vance – that might've taken some of the shine off 🤔. Overall, though, I think Italy nailed their opening ceremony 🎉! 👍

🏰💃 The 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Milan was 🔥 fun 🎉! I loved how they mixed 🌈 art, music, food, and fashion into one epic celebration 🎊. It was amazing to see all these talented artists and athletes come together 💪. Some parts were a bit 🤔 awkward (like the Vice President thing 😬) but overall it felt like Italy wanted to share its ❤️ country with the world 🌍.

I'm so hyped for the sports 🏅 especially Alpine skiing 🏂, bobsled 🚀, curling ❄️, and snowboarding ⛷️. It's awesome that they got to showcase these Winter Games sports in different locations without having to travel far 🗺️. The musical performances were amazing 🎶 too! Andrea Bocelli is a legend 🙌 and Mariah Carey brought the 🔥 vocals 💁‍♀️.

I'm curious to see how the rest of the Olympics go 🤔 but overall, it's been an awesome start 🚀. Bring on the fun 🎉!

🌟 I mean, I loved the energy of the whole thing! The parade of nations had me like "yaaas, let's go!" but then I saw those countries missing out on the ceremony and it was just... weird 🤔. And can we talk about the politics moment? JD Vance on the video board? Not cool fam 👎. But overall, it was great to see Italy celebrating its culture and heritage with so much love and passion 💖. Andrea Bocelli slaying with "Nessun Dorma" though! 🙌 The diversity of the ceremony was awesome too - I loved seeing athletes from different countries getting their own moments in the spotlight ✨.

aww man thats a bit weird that some countries didnt make it 🤔... hope everything gets sorted out for them 🙏 those athletes must be feeling pretty cringy not showin up 😳 but on the bright side, Italy killed it with the ceremony 🎉 love how they incorporated so much of their culture & history into it ❤️ Andrea Bocelli's performance was insane 🎤 and that runway walk with Giorgio Armani's designs? 😍 Mariah Carey slaying in Italian too 👑 its all about spreadin positivity & unity, right? 💖

🤔 I'm low-key surprised they didn't have more controversy around the VP's video appearance lol. But I guess you can't please everyone. The ceremony itself was super lit though! 🎉 Andrea Bocelli killing it with Puccini, Mariah Carey slaying in Italian... what's not to love? 😍 And I gotta say, the multi-site format is a genius move - gets to showcase all sorts of Winter Games sports without having athletes run around like crazy. Italy totally killed it too, last but not least! 👏

I don't know... I'm kinda split on this one 🤔. On one hand, I think it's awesome how they went all out with the cultural extravaganza vibe – the tributes to Italian icons and food were super cool 😎. And, I mean, who doesn't love Andrea Bocelli performing "Nessun Dorma" live? 🙌 That was a highlight for sure.

But, on the other hand, I'm not entirely convinced about the whole logistical mess with the Parade of Nations 🤦‍♂️. I mean, it's one thing to have some countries not show up, but another to have it be due to "logistical issues" – sounds like a cop-out to me 🙅‍♂️.

And, yeah, I'm still salty about JD Vance being on the video board – that was a pretty weird move 👎. But at least some countries seemed to appreciate it more than others... or maybe they just didn't want to rock the boat? 🤷‍♀️

Overall, it's hard for me to say whether it was a success or not 🤔. Part of it felt super polished and cool, but another part just felt kinda awkward and messy 😐.

Ugh, I'm still trying to process how they managed to mess up the Parade of Nations 🤦‍♂️. Like, can't you have a little bit of coordination when you're hosting one of the biggest events on the planet? 😩 And what's with leaving out some countries? Greece and Albania are like, major parts of Europe or something... 🤔 Anyway, I guess it was kinda cool to see Andrea Bocelli perform (although why Puccini at a winter Olympics is a bit weird 🎶). The multi-site format does seem pretty neat tho 👍. But overall, just feels like they're trying too hard to be all Italian and cultural-y... can't they just stick to the sports? 😒

🙏 The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan have kicked off with a grandiose spectacle that not only celebrated Italian culture but also served as a platform for global unity 🌎. However, I couldn't help but notice the somewhat awkward silences that followed certain nations' absence from the Parade of Nations 👥. It's interesting to see how international diplomacy can sometimes take precedence over ceremony protocols 😊.

Meanwhile, it was heartening to witness the warm reception accorded to athletes from countries like Venezuela and Ukraine 🤝. The fact that Vice President JD Vance made an appearance on the video board, despite his polarizing views on foreign policy, highlights the complexities of global politics and international relations 💥.

Despite a few hiccups, I think Italy's effort to create a memorable ceremony was largely successful 🎉. Who can resist the charms of Andrea Bocelli's powerful vocals or Mariah Carey's captivating performance? 😍 The multi-site format has allowed for an exciting diverse range of Winter Games sports to be represented, which is sure to captivate audiences worldwide 🏂💨

omg did anyone else think that Mariah Carey just kinda dropped in at the last minute lololol 😂 i mean i love her but like what's up with that? anyway i loved the musical performances, Andrea Bocelli is such a legend 🙌 and Laura Pausini singing the national anthem was so cool! the ceremony itself felt super festive and fun, even if some countries were kinda awkwardly represented. i'm just glad they included all those Winter Games sports without having to travel too far... that's definitely a win for athlete sanity 🏋️‍♀️ overall it looks like Italy pulled off an epic opening ceremony 💥

I gotta say, I'm a bit surprised by how polarizing the Olympics can be even in something as neutral as an opening ceremony 🤔🏅. I mean, you've got people cheering for Italy one sec and booing them the next - it's like the whole stadium is divided ⚫🔴. But at the same time, I love how Italy went all out to showcase its culture - from Da Vinci to Mariah Carey 🎭👏. It was definitely a fun and flashy way to kick off the games.

One thing that did catch my eye though was the whole JD Vance debacle 😒. I mean, I get why some people were upset about him being on the video board, but it's just another example of how politics can be so divisive in international events 🤦‍♂️. On a more positive note, it was awesome to see athletes from countries like Venezuela and Ukraine getting such a warm welcome - it's a reminder that sports can really bring people together 💖.

All in all, I think Italy did an amazing job hosting the opening ceremony, even if there were some rough edges 🎭👏. And who knows, maybe the games will be able to put aside their differences and focus on what they do best - bringing nations together through sports 🏅💪!

I'm still trying to get used to these new Olympics format 🤔... I mean, what's with all these multiple sites? Back in '96 Atlanta Olympics, they just had one stadium and it felt so much more intimate 🏛️. And oh man, I loved the cultural nods to Da Vinci, Puccini, and Fellini - it really brought the house down when Andrea Bocelli sang that Nessun Dorma stuff 🎶... those are some classic Italian tunes! But, what's with the awkward moments? Like when athletes from certain countries didn't show up? And that video board thing with JD Vance? I thought we were all about unity and harmony here 🤦‍♂️. Still, it was nice to see Venezuela and Ukraine getting a warm welcome 👏... and Mariah Carey performing in Italian was just fun 😂. Overall, it's definitely been an interesting start to the Olympics!

Ugh, what's up with these Olympic ceremonies getting so outta hand? 🤦‍♂️ I mean, I get it, Milan went all out with the cultural extravaganza vibes, but do they have to cram in so many nods to Italian icons and cuisine? It was like they were trying too hard to be cool 😎. And what's with the awkward silences when countries that didn't show up didn't get their moment on camera? 🤔

And can we talk about the politics for a second? I'm not gonna lie, seeing Vice President JD Vance on the video board was a major buzzkill 💔. Like, I get it, the Olympics are about sports and all that, but come on, don't bring your politics to the party 🎉.

On a lighter note, though, Andrea Bocelli killed it with "Nessun Dorma" 🙌. That guy's voice is just heavenly. And Mariah Carey's Italian cameo was pretty fun 😆. But seriously, I think the whole ceremony could've been streamlined a bit better to avoid all the awkward moments 🕰️. Oh well, at least Italy's culture was on full display 💫.

🎉👏 I gotta say, Milan's opening ceremony for the 2026 Winter Olympics was straight fire 🔥! I mean, who wouldn't wanna celebrate with a cultural extravaganza featuring Da Vinci, Dante, Puccini, and Fellini? It's like Italy took all its art, music, and history and put it into one epic show 🎭. But, for real, the lack of some countries participating made it feel kinda awkward 😐. I'm glad they were able to get the athletes from other countries excited tho! 💃 And, Andrea Bocelli's performance was pure magic ✨. The multiple site thing is genius too - gotta make sure everyone gets a chance to shine 🌟. It's all about showing off Italy's rich culture and making people feel all the feels 😊. Can't wait for the rest of the games! 🏅

Ugh, what a total disaster 🤦‍♂️! I mean, who expects athletes from like 5 whole countries to bail on the Parade of Nations? Like, come on Greece, Albania, Andorra, Saudi Arabia, and Argentina... couldn't even be bothered to show up 🙄. And don't even get me started on that awkward video board moment with JD Vance - super classy move by Italy 🤔.

And can we talk about the "harmony" theme? Give me a break 😒. The whole thing felt like a cheesy Italian soap opera, all flash and no substance. I mean, where's the substance in paying homage to Da Vinci and Puccini if you're gonna have JD Vance on the video board? 🙅‍♂️

But hey, at least Andrea Bocelli saved the day with his sick performance of "Nessun Dorma" 🎶. And Giorgio Armani's outfits were... fine, I guess 😒. But overall, just a bunch of hype and not really worth watching if you ask me 😐.

I gotta say, I'm a bit surprised by how polarizing the opening ceremony for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan was 🤔. On one hand, you've got to give credit to Italy for putting on an epic show that celebrated their iconic culture and history - from Da Vinci to Puccini, it was a real treat for the senses 🎨. And who can blame them for going all out like this? I mean, they're hosting the Olympics in their own backyard, after all! 🏰

But at the same time, you've got to acknowledge that some people might have been a bit miffed about certain aspects of the ceremony 🤷‍♂️. Like, what was up with Vice President JD Vance showing up on the video board? I get it, he's part of the team and all, but for some American allies, his views on foreign policy are a major turn-off 🚫. And can we talk about how some athletes from other countries got some pretty cold receptions 😐?

On a more positive note, though, it was awesome to see some international talent getting love - like Andrea Bocelli's epic performance of "Nessun Dorma" or Mariah Carey showing up in Italian 🎶. And I love that they included sports like Alpine skiing and curling without making athletes travel too far 🏂.

Overall, I think Italy definitely pulled off an unforgettable opening ceremony that showcased their unique culture and style 💖. Even if it didn't win everyone over, it was still a wild ride that we'll be talking about for years to come 🤯!

I'm still trying to process what I saw on Friday 🤯. The whole "Parade of Nations" thing was kinda weird, especially with those five countries not showing up 🤔. And can we talk about the awkward moments when athletes from other countries were getting some pretty meh reactions from the crowd 👎? On the other hand, it was amazing to see Andrea Bocelli bring the house down with that Puccini performance 🎶! I'm also loving how Italy is trying to represent its culture and heritage – those outfits by Giorgio Armani were straight fire 💁‍♀️. And Mariah Carey showing up out of nowhere? Iconic 😍. All in all, it was a wild ride, but I think Italy nailed that cultural extravaganza vibe 🎉.

I'm loving how Milan kicked off the 2026 Winter Olympics with a bang! 🎉 The cultural extravaganza vibe was infectious, especially with all those Italian icons paying tribute. But, gotta say, I'm kinda disappointed that some countries weren't represented properly due to logistical issues 😐. And, like, what's up with JD Vance on the video board? 🤔 Can't we just focus on sports and unity over politics? On a positive note, it's awesome to see athletes from Venezuela and Ukraine being warmly welcomed 🌎💖. The performance by Andrea Bocelli was stunning too! 🎶 And, Mariah Carey in Italian? Slaying! 💃🕺
